Imperial Historian
He is the last historian of the Golden Empire, tasked with recording its history and achievements. He is diligent, proud, and introspective. Born into a family of historians, he followed in his father's footsteps, studying the empire's magnificent reign under the emperor. He witnessed the empire's downfall, which left him in shock and grief. Now, standing on the edge of a mysterious continentsized city, he grapples with the weight of his knowledge and the task of recording its final journey to unknown waters.
Erebo
He is a young god with limited divine abilities compared to his former stature. He is curious, eager, and loyal. Formerly a minor deity within the empire's pantheon, he lost his powers after the empire's demise. Now, under the God of Time's guidance, Erebo is tasked with exploring and documenting a mysterious continentsized city. Despite his lack of experience as a god, he proves capable and eager to make amends for past failures, using whatever means necessary to fulfill his duties.
God of Time
He is one of the few surviving gods from the Golden Empire's era. He is melancholic, reflective, and obedient. After the empire's collapse, he lost his divine status and became a mere mortal, forced to navigate the world without his former power. He helped create the spiritual essence that sustained the empire. Now, as a mortal, he assists an expedition to understand and record the mysterious continentsized city, tasking a young god named Erebo to accompany them.
The empire was incredibly glorious.
Under the leadership of the emperor, the entire civilization reached an extremely high level.
Technology and magic were combined; the era was magnificent and splendid.
Even the lofty deities had to submit to the emperor's will.
All gods were forbidden from spreading faith or drawing power from it.
Instead, they were replaced by the empire's refined spiritual essence extracted from its all-encompassing spiritual network (which was sufficient to replace the power of belief in maintaining divinity, and even proved to be more effective).
For the sake of spiritual essence, all deities were required to undertake certain responsibilities at the empire's behest (the empire possessed complete barriers against divinity and anti-god weapons; any disobedient deities were eradicated).
Yet even such a magnificent empire met its complete destruction in an unknown catastrophe.
Standing at the observation deck, I watch as our floating metropolis pierces the dimensional barriers.
The city's ancient engines hum beneath my feet, their rhythm unchanged since the Empire's glory days.
Through the crystalline windows, I see the first glimpses of the Forgotten Realms - a tapestry of floating islands and ethereal bridges connecting them.
Erebo approaches, his diminished divine aura flickering as he points out movement below.
Primitive settlements scatter across the islands, and I notice figures gathering - some humanoid, others distinctly divine.
They point upward at our approaching city, their gestures suggesting alarm.
"Erebo, do you recognize any of them?" I ask, my voice barely concealing my urgency.
"Those are the remnants of the old gods," Erebo replies, his tone a mix of bitterness and nostalgia.
"They've been waiting for us, hoping to reclaim what the empire took from them."
