Oliver Thompson
conflicted, and introspective. Oliver shares a close friendship with Jake and often spends time with him. He develops feelings for Jake's sister, Emily, after a kiss, which complicates their friendship. Despite Emily's request to forget the kiss, Oliver struggles to move on from the moment they shared.
Emily Anderson
sensitive, and determined. Emily shares a complex relationship with Oliver after they share a kiss before he goes fishing with her brother. She requests that Oliver forget the incident to avoid complicating their friendships.
Jake Anderson
loyal, and easygoing. Jake values his friendship with Oliver and trusts him implicitly. Unaware of the tension between Oliver and his sister Emily, he remains a steady presence in Oliver's life.
"Will you be my best friend, Oliver?"
The voice rings in my phone, bringing me out of my daydream.
"Hello... hello!"
I finally respond to the caller, and she sighs in relief.
"I thought I lost you. I've been trying to call you all through the week," she says.
"Who is this?"
I ask, still a bit dazed.
"Are you kidding me? I'm really hurt that you can't even recognize my voice after that naughty kiss you gave me," she says, and I blink several times as I process her words.
It's Emily Anderson, my best friend's younger sister.
I click my tongue as I remember the kiss I gave her before leaving to fish with her brother, Jake.
She had asked me to kiss her as a practice, and impulsively, I did as she requested.
"Emily? What do you want?"
I ask her.
"Oliver, I'm so sorry to have disturbed you in your busy schedule, but I need a favour from you," she says.
"What favour?"
"I want you to forget that naughty kiss you gave me the day you left to go fishing with my brother," she says, and I scoffs,
leaning against my bedroom wall.
I bring the phone to my left ear, watching the dust particles dance in the afternoon sunlight streaming through the window.
"I can't erase it from my memory," I say, and she sighs.
"Please, Oliver. I know you're a good friend. I'm begging you," she says, and I trace the wooden desk in front of me with my free hand.
Emily used to sit there when she came to do her homework while I studied for my SATs.
The memory of her soft lips on mine still fresh in my mind.
I look out the window and see Jake shooting hoops in his driveway across the street.
I'm not surprised that Emily wants me to forget about the kiss because she knows that if Jake finds out, he'll kill me.
"Alright, Emily," I say, "consider it forgotten."
"Thank you, Oliver. I'm sorry to have disturbed you," she says before hanging up.
I pace my room, staring at the empty spot by my desk where Emily used to sit.
My phone feels heavy in my hand as I draft and delete multiple text messages.
Each one sounds either too desperate or too casual.
I watch Jake sink another shot through the window, and guilt gnaws at me.
He's my best friend, and I shouldn't be doing this, but I can't stop myself.
Finally, I type out a simple message suggesting that we meet privately to talk things through.
My thumb hovers over the send button for several seconds before I press it.
The message is sent, and I brace myself for the consequences.
