"Hey man, how would you like to go on tour with Elvis?"
That was the question I got from Elvis himself one day.
It was around the middle of the 1970s.
I had just finished a job working on a film crew, and Elvis was getting ready to do a string of concerts on the West Coast.
This would be the first time he would be doing concerts on the West Coast since 1957, so it was kind of a big deal.
Elvis was my childhood best friend, and now he was asking me to join him on tour.
I couldn't think of anything I'd rather do.
So I told him yes, of course, and that I would meet him in Los Angeles in a few days.
The next thing I knew, I was flying to Los Angeles and being picked up by one of Elvis's bodyguards.
From that point on, my life became a whirlwind of activity as I went from city to city with Elvis and his entourage.
When we weren't at the concert venue, we were at the hotel or traveling to our next destination.
It was nice to have some time off from my normal routine, but it was also exhausting at times.
Elvis had always been known for his high energy level, and this tour was no different.
One afternoon, while we were in Los Angeles, Priscilla came to me and asked if I wanted to go with her and Patsy to the Beverly Hills boutiques.
I told her that I didn't really have anything to do, so I might as well go.
I wasn't really into shopping, but it was better than sitting around the hotel room all day.
Elvis had a meeting with his manager, so he wouldn't be joining us.
Before we left, Elvis came up to me and whispered in my ear, "Keep an eye on them. They can get a little wild when they're shopping."
I nodded and said, "Don't worry. I'll keep an eye on them."
We arrived at Neiman Marcus and went straight to the women's department.
Priscilla and Patsy started trying on outfits right away.
They would come out of the dressing room and ask for my opinion.
I would give them a thumbs up or thumbs down depending on how they looked.
They seemed to appreciate my input, even though I didn't know much about fashion.
After a while, Priscilla came out of the dressing room with a silk scarf in her hand.
She said, "What do you think of this? It would look good on you."
I took the scarf from her and said, "Thanks. I'll take it."
Then she said, "Let's go look at some jewelry."
We went over to the jewelry counter and started looking at necklaces and earrings.
While we were browsing, I noticed a young woman standing behind the counter staring at me. She was probably around 20 years old with long blonde hair and blue eyes.
She kept glancing over at me every few seconds.
I tried to ignore her, but it was hard not to notice when someone was staring at you like that.
Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and turned around to face her.
When our eyes met, she quickly looked away and started fiddling with some jewelry on the counter.
Patsy noticed what was going on and elbowed me in the ribs.
Patsy leaned in and whispered, "Looks like you've got an admirer."
I chuckled nervously, "Yeah, but I don't think Elvis would appreciate me making new friends."
Priscilla smirked and said, "Oh, come on. It's not every day you get a chance to be the star of your own show."
Standing at the jewelry counter, I examined a display of gold watches.
I pretended to be interested in the intricate details of the timepieces, but I could feel the blonde woman's eyes on me.
Priscilla nudged me playfully and pointed to a bracelet with diamonds and rubies.
"It's beautiful," she said.
I nodded in agreement, but my attention kept drifting back to the mystery woman.
She had moved closer now, seemingly interested in the same display of jewelry as us.
Patsy, never one for subtlety, deliberately stepped aside to create a gap between us.
The blonde woman seized the opportunity, sliding into the space beside me.
Her perfume wafted through the air, a light floral scent that mingled with the store's air conditioning.
My heart pounded in my chest as I finally turned to face her.
The bright lights above the jewelry counter illuminated her features, and she startled at the sudden directness of my gaze.
She fumbled with the watch display, nearly knocking it over in her nervousness.
Instinctively, I reached out to steady the display, my hand brushing against her fingers in the process.
Behind me, I heard Patsy's poorly concealed giggle and Priscilla's gentle shushing.
The woman's cheeks flushed pink, and she straightened her posture, smoothing out her dress.
She opened her mouth to speak, but her words caught in her throat.
With a deep breath, she finally whispered, "I just wanted to say, you're doing a great job looking out for them."
I mumble a quick "thanks" and force my attention back to the glass display case.
Though I'm intensely aware of her presence beside me, I pretend to study each watch with exaggerated interest.
The fluorescent lights make the watches sparkle as I lean over them, tracing the edge of the counter with my fingers.
Behind me, I hear Patsy's snickers and Priscilla's gentle shushing.
The blonde woman shifts her weight from foot to foot, her floral perfume still drifting my way.
