I'm Christy and I'm the only one in my class that doesn't have a superpower.
Everyone gets their superpower at age six, but for some reason, I still don't have mine.
I moved to this town with my parents, so I had to make new friends.
Luckily, I met Kairos, Similia, Emma, and Emmett.
They are all from different places: Kai is from New Jersey, Similia is from Mendy, and Emma and Emmett are from Similia.
None of us are siblings, but we live in the same town.
Kairos Mandisa Malia prefers to be called Kai.
He has hair and eyes that change color, but he keeps his hair under his hat.
He has nine siblings and is from New Jersey.
His parents are from Jack Japan, so he flew into Japanese and is fluent in Japanese.
He is my best friend and secretly dates me.
The Kai Chronicles
I adjust my pink glasses and walk through the iron gates of the park.
The playground is on the other side of the park, and I can see my friends from here.
The afternoon sun makes everything too bright, but I can still make out Kai's baseball cap by the swings.
Emma's almost-white hair shines near the slide, and Emmett is on a bench, probably tinkering with some gadget.
I hesitate for a moment before raising my hand to wave.
Yesterday, a kid showed off his new flying power during recess, and I don't want to get in the way again.
My hand trembles slightly as I raise it, but I manage a small wave.
Kai notices first, his eyes shifting from brown to bright green - something that happens when he's happy.
"Hey, Christy!" Kai calls out, jogging over with a grin.
"Guess what? Emmett just figured out why your power hasn't shown up yet."
The Kai Chronicles
Emma nods enthusiastically, her eyes wide. "It's because you're not from here, Christy—you're from somewhere else entirely."
I stand there, frozen, as Kai's words sink in.
"What do you mean somewhere else?"
I ask, my hands fidgeting with the frames of my glasses.
Kai grins mischievously and reaches down, pretending to tug at my leg.
"No, I'm not pulling your leg—but I could!"
He chuckles at his own terrible joke, and I can't help but roll my eyes and smile.
Emma bounces over, her nearly-white hair catching the sunlight.
"Hi bestie!" she calls out, waving enthusiastically.
She pulls out a tablet from behind her back and holds it up for me to see.
The screen shows a strange map with glowing dots scattered across it.
The Kai Chronicles
"Emmett's been working on this all morning," she explains, leading me over to where Emmett sits hunched over his tablet.
His dark eyes are fixed intently on the screen, and the bench creaks as we crowd around him.
My shoulder brushes against Kai's, and I feel a jolt of electricity run through me.
"See this cluster here?" Emmett points to a bright spot on the screen.
"That's where normal powers come from. But your energy signature," he traces a line to a distant corner, "it's completely different."
The Kai Chronicles
I lean closer, squinting through my pink glasses at the mysterious pattern that supposedly explains my existence.
"Different how?"
I press my fingers against my temples as a throbbing pain builds behind my eyes.
The glowing dots on Emmett's tablet blur together, making me squint.
Kai notices my discomfort and places a gentle hand on my shoulder, his eyes shifting to a concerned blue.
"Hey, Christy, are you okay?"
Emma suggests we take a break from the research and get some water from the fountain.
As we walk away from the tablet, the pounding in my head continues steadily.
I try to focus on putting one foot in front of the other, grateful when Emmett tucks his tablet away.
"Christy, I think your power might be connected to something bigger," Emmett says quietly, glancing around as if someone might overhear.
Kai nods, his expression serious now. "Yeah, like maybe you're linked to another world or dimension."
Emma's eyes sparkle with excitement. "What if you're the key to unlocking something amazing?"
The Kai Chronicles
I lean against the water fountain, still rubbing my temples.
The others hover nearby, giving me concerned looks.
Kai steps closer, his hair shifting to a soft purple under his cap.
"Hey," he says, reaching into his jacket pocket, "you're my best friend."
I smile despite the pain.
The Kai Chronicles
"You're my bestie too."
He glances around to make sure Emma and Emmett are distracted, then leans in close to my ear.
His warm breath tickles as he whispers, "Hey, I got your favorite candy, baby."
My headache spikes, making me wince.
The pain is almost unbearable.
Through squinted eyes, I see Kai's hair change from purple to a worried gray under his cap.
The ground beneath us starts to rumble, causing the water in the fountain to ripple.
Emma drops her tablet, and Emmett's gadgets start beeping wildly.
The Kai Chronicles
I clutch my head and stumble forward.
Suddenly, I remember how my headaches always seem to come before something bad happens.
"Something's coming," I manage to whisper through clenched teeth.
A dark shadow passes overhead, and I look up through my pink glasses to see massive wings blocking out the sun.
I stagger backward as the winged creature descends.
My head is still pounding, but I can't look away from the beast.
Kai shouts something in Japanese, his voice making the air ripple.
Emma raises her hands, and a rainbow shield appears in front of us.
Emmett pulls out a gadget that shoots sparks.
Nothing affects the beast.
Through my pink glasses, I watch their powers bounce off harmlessly.
My legs shake, and I start humming to steady myself.
The melody of "You Are My Sunshine" slips out, soft at first, then stronger.
The creature freezes mid-roar.
The Kai Chronicles
My humming grows stronger, and the creature slowly lowers its head.
Its fierce yellow eyes meet mine through my pink glasses.
The pain in my head fades, replaced by a strange tingling sensation.
I take slow steps forward while my friends shout behind me.
The creature's scales shimmer with an otherworldly blue glow that matches the energy signature on Emmett's tablet.
The Kai Chronicles
I reach out my hand, drawn by an inexplicable urge to touch its crystalline hide.
As I get closer, the beast suddenly dips its massive shoulder toward me.
I place my hand on its shimmering scales, feeling a surge of power course through me.
I stand there, my hand still tingling.
Words come out of my mouth without me thinking them.
"Go home to your children," I tell the creature.
"They are waiting for you."
Its yellow eyes lock with mine through my pink glasses, and it lets out a soft rumble that vibrates through my chest.
The blue glow around us grows brighter.
Then, in a movement both graceful and powerful, the creature spreads its crystalline wings and takes to the sky.
I watch as the blue glow fades into the distance until it vanishes beyond the horizon.
Behind me, I hear Emma gasp, and Kai's hat falls off, revealing his shock-white hair.
Kai turns to me, eyes wide.
The Kai Chronicles
"How did you know it had children?" he asks, voice trembling.
Emma steps closer, her voice barely a whisper. "And what just happened to your eyes?"
I sink onto a park bench, my legs wobbly.
My friends crowd around me, all talking at once.
Kai's hair cycles through worried colors.
Emma keeps pointing at my eyes.
I reach up to touch them, wondering what they're seeing that I'm not.
Then I remember my pink glasses and pull them off to clean them.
Emmett gasps and holds up his tablet screen so I can see my reflection.
My eyes, normally a deep blue, now have crystalline patterns that shimmer like the creature's scales.
When I blink, the patterns ripple like water.
Kai leans in closer, his voice filled with awe.
The Kai Chronicles
"I've seen this before," he says softly.
"It's the mark of the ancient ones."
Emma's eyes widen, and she grips my arm.
"Does that mean you're connected to them now?" she asks, her voice a mix of fear and excitement.
Emmett taps furiously on his tablet, glancing up at me. "We need to find out what this connection means before it's too late."
The Kai Chronicles
I stare at my reflection in Emmett's tablet, watching the crystal patterns swirl in my eyes.
The shimmering grows more intense when I think about the creature.
My heart races with excitement.
Kai reaches to squeeze my hand, but I jump up suddenly, causing his hat to tumble off again.
His hair flashes rainbow colors as he scrambles to pick it up.
The Kai Chronicles
Emma points at my eyes again, her voice filled with wonder.
"The patterns are glowing brighter," she says.
I try to calm myself down, but the crystalline blue keeps spreading across my irises.
I sit back down on the bench, still trembling from the encounter.
My friends hover around me, watching my every move.
Kai kneels in front of me, his hat slipping to reveal streaks of rose-gold in his hair.
He reaches out, fingers hesitating before gently lifting my chin.
My heart skips as his eyes meet mine, searching the new crystal patterns swirling there.
The Kai Chronicles
"You're more beautiful than ever," he whispers, making Emma gasp and Emmett drop his tablet.
I try to look away, embarrassed that our secret might be exposed, but Kai holds my gaze.
I lean back on the bench, overwhelmed by his intensity.
My eyes sting from the prolonged contact.
Suddenly, words flood my mind - a poem I've never heard before, yet somehow feels ancient and familiar.
Without thinking, I start reciting:
"Wings of crystal, heart of light,
Binding worlds through endless night."
My voice echoes strangely, as if it's coming from everywhere at once.
Emma steps back, her eyes wide.
Emmett scrambles to pick up his tablet and starts typing furiously.
Kai's hair shifts to deep purple, a color I've never seen before.
The Kai Chronicles
He recognizes the language - it's the same ancient tongue I used with the creature.
Kai's voice trembles with urgency.
"You're speaking the language of the ancients," he says, his eyes locked on mine.
Emma clutches my arm tighter, her voice barely a whisper. "Does this mean you can communicate with them?"
I sit on the bench, processing my new crystal-patterned eyes.
A squirrel scampers up, chittering urgently.
Without thinking, I respond, "Yes, I understand about the fallen nest."
My friends freeze, staring at me.
Kai's hair turns stark white under his cap.
"Wait, did you just... talk to that squirrel?" Emma asks, backing away slightly.
The squirrel bounces impatiently, and I automatically translate its concerns about baby birds.
Emmett drops his tablet completely while Kai grips the bench.
"I've always been able to do this," I explain, watching their shocked faces.
Kai's voice is barely a whisper, filled with awe.
The Kai Chronicles
"You've been hiding this from us all along?"
Emma's eyes dart between me and the squirrel, her disbelief palpable.
I stand up from the bench, brushing dirt from my knees.
The crystal patterns in my eyes catch the sunlight as I look toward the dense trees beyond the playground.
My heart races with newfound confidence.
"Hey guys," I say, trying to sound casual despite my excitement, "who wants to go into the woods?"
Emma immediately tenses up, while Emmett clutches his tablet closer.
The Kai Chronicles
Kai's hair flashes orange beneath his cap - a warning sign.
But I smile, knowing this is just the beginning.
I lead my friends toward the woods, following the whispers in the wind.
We stop at a gnarled oak tree, its bark twisted with age.
I press my hand against the rough bark and tilt my head, listening intently.
The crystal patterns in my eyes pulse with blue light as I concentrate.
Kai steps closer, his hair shifting to a concerned purple beneath his cap.
Emma and Emmett exchange worried glances as I stand completely still.
After a long moment, I drop my hand and turn to them with an embarrassed smile.
"False alarm," I admit, adjusting my pink glasses.
Kai's eyes narrow, his voice laced with skepticism. "Are you sure? It seemed like something was happening."
Emma crosses her arms, her tone a mix of concern and curiosity. "Maybe you're still figuring out how to control it."
The Kai Chronicles
Emmett nods, glancing at the oak tree. "Or maybe the trees have secrets they're not ready to share yet."
I lean against the oak tree, adjusting my pink glasses as a memory surfaces.
"Kai," I say, watching his hair shift to curious yellow beneath his cap, "remember that poem from school yesterday? About the leaves?"
His eyes widen with recognition.
Emma bounces excitedly while Emmett stops typing on his tablet.
Kai recites the first line about golden leaves leading to ancient power sites.
The Kai Chronicles
I scan the forest floor, the crystal patterns in my eyes reflecting off fallen leaves.
A cluster of gold-tinted leaves catches my attention, forming an arrow shape pointing deeper into the woods.
"Let's see where this leads," I say, stepping forward with determination.
I follow the golden leaves, my friends trailing behind me.
The crystal patterns in my eyes pulse brighter with each step.
Suddenly, I feel a strange pull, as if being drawn upward.
I start floating inches above the ground.
Kai grabs my hand, his hair turning silver with fear beneath his cap.
Emma screams as my feet lift higher.
Emmett frantically checks his tablet's readings.
The pull grows stronger, and I rise toward the treetops despite Kai's grip.
Through my pink glasses, I see the afternoon sky darken to twilight.
The forest holds its breath, and I realize we're not alone.
The Kai Chronicles
I hover three feet off the ground, my feet dangling uselessly as Kai anchors me with both hands wrapped around my waist.
The crystal patterns in my eyes reflect off his face while his hat slips, revealing hair cycling through shades of deep blue and gold.
Emma reaches for my ankle but pulls back when sparks crackle between us.
Emmett's tablet beeps wildly as he scans the energy field lifting me.
I grip Kai's shoulders, feeling his muscles strain against the force trying to separate us.
The Kai Chronicles
When he pulls me closer and whispers his promise not to let go, the intimate moment makes my heart race despite my fear.
Still floating in the air, I lean close to his ear, my heart pounding.
"Kai," I whisper, "maybe we should tell Emma and Emmett about us dating."
His hair flashes pink beneath his fallen cap as he pulls back slightly, uncertainty clear in his expression.
Emma and Emmett continue trying to figure out what's lifting me, but Kai whispers back, "I don't know. I don't want to change things with our friend group."
I grip his shoulders tighter as another force tugs me upward.
The Kai Chronicles
Keeping secrets feels wrong now that I'm discovering my true nature.
I whisper back, "I'm scared too."
I gradually drift back to the ground, my feet touching down softly as Kai steadies me with trembling hands.
His hair cycles through relieved shades of green and gold.
The crystal patterns in my eyes dim while I adjust my pink glasses and smooth my clothes, trying to act casual about the unexpected flight.
"Well, that was beautiful," I say with forced cheerfulness, noticing Emma's wide-eyed stare and Emmett's furious tablet-tapping.
I grab Kai's hand impulsively, no longer caring if the others see, and tug him forward.
The Kai Chronicles
I squeeze his hand and turn to face Emma and Emmett, who are still trying to process what just happened.
Through my pink glasses, I see Emma's confused look at our joined hands.
To break the tension, I suggest playing charades, hoping the game will help reveal our relationship naturally.
Kai's hair flashes pink beneath his cap as he catches on to my plan.
I go first, acting out a heart shape and pointing between Kai and myself.
The Kai Chronicles
Emma gasps while Emmett drops his tablet again.
