I was born in New York City, I lived with my family there and I was a lonely boy with no friends and I always daydreamed about having adventures like Mowgli from The Jungle Book, and one day while on my way to school I got chased by three teen bullies and I had to run into a bookstore to get away from them, and the owner of the bookstore saw me and he smiled at me, and he introduced himself as Carl Coriander, the proprietor of Bradbury's used bookstore, and he asked me what I was doing in there and I told him that I was running away from bullies, so he let me hide in his bookstore until they went away, and while in there I started looking at books and I found a mysterious book with no title or author on it, so I decided to buy it and take it with me to the school attic, where I would go to read instead of going to class, and once I was there I opened the book and started reading it, and suddenly everything around me became dark, and then everything lit up again, but not like before, because now it wasn’t the school attic anymore, but a jungle.

The Jungle Book
I crouch behind a fallen tree trunk, my heart pounding in my chest.
The sounds of the jungle are unfamiliar, and I’m not sure what to make of them.
Leaves rustle nearby, and I catch a glimpse of movement in the dense foliage.
It’s something large and dark, and it’s heading straight for me.
My breath catches in my throat as I see a sleek black shape emerge from between two massive trees.
The panther moves with fluid grace, its muscles rippling beneath its smooth coat.
Its yellow eyes are fixed on me, and I can feel its intensity as it studies me.
I hold my breath, unsure of what to expect.
The panther circles the tree trunk slowly, keeping a calculated distance from me.
I can see the intelligence in its eyes as it assesses me, trying to determine if I’m a threat or not.

Finally, it stops in front of me, its tail swishing once before it does something that surprises me completely. It sits down on its haunches, sphinx-like, and tilts its head to the side as if waiting for me to speak.
I grip the rough bark of the tree trunk beneath my fingers, unsure of whether to run or stay still.
The panther regards me calmly, its eyes never leaving mine.
The panther's tail swishes back and forth as we maintain eye contact.
My fingers dig deeper into the tree bark when its mouth opens, revealing sharp white teeth.
But instead of a growl, human words emerge in a deep, resonant voice.
"You seem lost, little cub."
I slide down against the trunk, my legs giving out from shock.
The panther moves closer, each step deliberate and graceful.
My mind races to make sense of what I’m seeing, but I can’t look away from those piercing yellow eyes.
The panther's whiskers twitch as it leans in, its nose inches from my face.
"Welcome to your story, Bray," it whispers, and everything changes.
