Tarzan and Jane
When I was a baby, my parents and I came to the jungle.
We were going to stay here for a couple of weeks.
But then my parents died and I was left all alone.
A kind gorilla named Kala found me and took me back to her place.
She raised me like I was one of them.
I learned how to talk, but they didn’t speak English.
They spoke in their own language, so I learned how to speak their language instead.
I became strong and smart.
I could climb up trees and jump from one tree to another without getting hurt.
I could swing on vines and talk and play with the gorillas.
This was my life and I loved it here.
I had everything I needed and I was happy.
Years went by and I didn’t know anything about the world outside of the jungle.
I didn’t know how to speak in English or any other human language.
I didn’t know how to read or write.
I crouch on a thick branch, watching Jane walk beneath the canopy.
She is wearing a white dress that catches patches of sunlight filtering through the leaves.
She keeps looking up at the trees, but she hasn’t seen me yet.
My fingers grip the rough bark as I edge closer, following her path from above.
She stops near a fallen log and brushes away mosquitoes.
I catch the familiar scent of her soap—the one she calls lavender—drift on the breeze.
She calls my name again and I grab onto the nearest vine, testing its strength.
It’s thick and sturdy, so I give it a firm tug.
The rough texture feels familiar against my calloused palms.
I’ve spent countless hours climbing and swinging through the trees.
I know every branch and vine in this jungle.
I test the vine again, feeling its weight and tension.
It will hold me, but I need to be careful not to startle her when I land beside her.
She’s closer now, her voice calling out my name again.
I watch as she steps carefully over the moss-covered log.
Her eyes are still fixed on the path ahead, unaware of my presence above her.
My muscles tense as I calculate the angle of my swing.
I need to land beside her without startling her, so I can’t let myself drop too far before releasing the vine.
The vine creaks softly as I wrap it once around my arm, securing myself for the controlled descent.
A gentle breeze stirs the leaves around us, carrying Jane’s scent stronger now that she’s directly below me.
I lean forward on my branch, my muscles coiled and ready to spring into action.
The thick rope of plant fiber coils securely around my forearm as I gauge the distance between us.
My toes grip the rough bark beneath them, preparing for the push off.
Jane pauses again, looking ahead at a patch of bright flowers that catch her eye.
Her gaze is fixed on the colorful blooms, giving me the perfect moment to launch myself from the branch.
I push off from the tree, letting my body fall into the familiar arc of the swing.
The jungle air rushes past me as I control my momentum, aiming for the clear space beside her.
I land silently, my feet touching the ground just as she turns, eyes wide with surprise and recognition.
