skilled, and brave. Jessica is 28 years old and plays a crucial role in maintaining everyone's health on the island by treating injuries effectively.
I don’t know how long I slept, but it was daytime when I woke up.
When I opened my eyes, I saw three women sleeping on the ground, and a fourth lying on my right with her back to me.
I stood up slowly so I wouldn’t wake them, and went to find some branches.
After a while, I came back with some branches and put them down next to the fire pit.
Then I took out my lighter and lit the branches.
The fire soon filled the fire pit.
Seeing that the fire was burning well, I walked to the stream and found some large flat stones.
I put the stones in the fire pit and let them heat up.
While waiting for the stones to heat up, I went to find some long branches.
After a while, I came back with several branches and put two of them in the stream.
I took off my shoes and stepped into the stream.
The water was very cold.
I waded deeper into the stream, and the water level reached my calves.
The morning sun was shining from the east, but the stream was shaded by trees on both sides, so the sun could hardly shine through the thick canopy above.
The water was very clear, but it was dark due to the lack of sunlight.
Small fish were swimming in the water.
They darted away when they saw me, and I couldn’t see them anymore.
I bent down and cupped the water in my hands.
The coldness of the water shocked me.
I splashed it across my face.
The droplets ran down my neck and soaked into my already damp shirt.
I heard some noise behind me, which meant one of the women was waking up.
I quickly splashed my face again.
Yesterday’s ordeal had left me exhausted, and I still felt very tired this morning.
I heard footsteps crunching on the leaves and twigs on the ground behind me.
I was still crouched by the stream, and I didn’t turn around.
The footsteps drew closer, but they were very light, as if the person didn’t want to disturb me.
The sound was not like Sarah’s confident strides or Emily’s businesslike pace.
Water dripped from my chin onto my shirt, which clung uncomfortably to my chest due to the water I had splashed on it.
I remained still and let the person approach me.
The morning sun filtered through the trees and cast dappled shadows on the surface of the stream.
Small fish darted between my feet in the shallow water.
"You're up early," a soft voice said, breaking the morning's quiet.
I turned to see Lily standing there, her eyes reflecting the dappled sunlight.
"I couldn't sleep," she admitted, glancing at the stream, "I keep thinking about what you told us last night."
I stood up from the stream, and water dripped from my clothes.
Lily looked at me uncertainly.
I nodded at her and walked back to the camp.
Lily followed me.
I could see that she was thinking about something, but I didn’t know what it was.
When we reached the camp, I said, "I am going to search through the luggage that washed up on the shore. Maybe we can find some things that will help us survive."
Lily nodded, and I went to the shore.
The tide had gone out overnight, and a lot of luggage had been washed up on the shore.
There were several bags scattered around our shelter, and they were all in good condition.
They must have been washed up recently.
I picked up a bag and brought it back to the camp.
Lily watched me silently as I put the bag down next to the fire pit.
I hesitated for a moment, remembering the faces of the passengers on the ship.
But then I pushed those thoughts aside and opened the bag. The clothes inside were wet, but they were still wearable.
I took them out one by one and laid them on a dry rock next to the fire pit.
There were also some personal items in the bag, such as a wallet, a watch, and a small knife.
I took them out one by one and put them next to each other on another dry rock.
The knife was very small, but it could be useful if we needed to cut something.
When I was almost done searching through the bag, I heard Sarah stirring in the shelter behind me.
She emerged from the shelter, her hair disheveled from sleep.
I gestured to the items spread out on the rocks.
The morning sun was shining down on us, and the small knife glinted in the light.
Sarah walked over to me and examined the items on the rocks.
She picked up a shirt and examined it carefully.
"What are you doing?" she asked me.
"I am sorting through these clothes," I replied.
"They are all wet, so I am going to dry them by the fire. I have already heated some stones in the fire pit, and I will lay them out on the stones."
Sarah nodded and picked up another shirt.
She examined it carefully, then set it aside.
"Where did you find these?"
She asked me.
"They washed up on the shore," I replied.
"There were several bags scattered around our shelter."
Sarah glanced at me, then looked back at the clothes.
"What do you think we should do with them?" she asked me.
"We can use them for bandages," I suggested.
Sarah nodded thoughtfully, then picked up a pair of pants.
She examined them carefully, then set them aside. Emily stirred in the shelter behind us, but Jessica was still asleep.
I began arranging the wet clothes on the warm stones in the fire pit.
Lily approached, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Did you find anything else useful?" she asked, glancing at the small knife.
I hesitated, then said, "Just this knife and some personal items... but there's something else I need to tell you all."
While Sarah and Lily continued to sort through the clothes, I picked up the last backpack and examined it.
It was made of a heavy nylon material, and it had a lot of pockets on the outside.
I searched through each of them, but there was nothing inside.
I turned the backpack over and examined the bottom.
There was an unusual seam running along the bottom of the backpack, about an inch from the edge.
It looked like it might be a hidden pocket.
Sarah and Lily were still examining clothes nearby, but they weren't paying attention to me.
I reached out and ran my fingers along the edge of what looked like a hidden pocket.
The seam felt stiff under my fingers, and I could feel something papery inside.
I worked my fingers along the edge of the seam until I found a small zipper.
The zipper was buried under a fold in the fabric, so it hadn't been visible at first glance.
I carefully pulled the zipper free from where it was concealed under a fold in the fabric. The compartment was very tight, but I managed to work my fingers into it.
I felt around for a moment, then my fingers closed around something papery.
I glanced over at Sarah and Lily, who were still examining clothes nearby.
They weren't paying attention to me, so I slowly pulled out what felt like a document.
It was folded into a compact square, and I carefully opened it up.
The paper was dry despite being submerged in water, and as I unfolded it I saw that it was some kind of map.
The lines on the map were faded, but they looked like they might have been drawn by hand.
There were also several symbols marked on the map in red ink.
I studied the map for a moment, trying to figure out what it depicted.
The map showed a path leading to an "X" marked deep within the island's heart.
I held the map in my hands, trying to decide whether or not to tell the others about it.
Sarah glanced over at me, then said, "What are you looking at?"
I hesitated for a moment, then gestured to her and Lily.
"Come here."
They both walked over to where I was sitting next to the fire pit.
I held the map in my hands, carefully unfolding it so that it lay flat.
The paper was worn and crinkled as it unfolded, revealing the mysterious markings on its surface.
I pointed to the red "X" marked deep within the island's interior.
"This looks like some kind of path," I said, tracing the line with my finger.
"I found this in a secret compartment in the backpack. It must have been hidden there." Sarah leaned in to study the symbols marked on the map.
As a teacher, she was always eager to learn and analyze new things.
"Can you see what any of these symbols mean?"
I asked her.
Sarah examined them carefully, her brow furrowing as she studied them intently.
"Some of these look familiar," she said finally, pointing to several symbols along the path leading up to the "X".
"They look like landmarks we passed yesterday."
Lily's eyes widened in surprise.
"Really? Which ones?"
Sarah pointed to several symbols on the map, each one representing a landmark we had passed on our journey yesterday.
"They all match up with what we saw," Sarah said.
