I am a 40yearold plussize Englishwoman, travelling with five friends to an island resort for a 15day holiday.
We arrive in the afternoon, check in and spend some time in our rooms before meeting in the lobby.
I am nervous and fumble with my hands as I walk towards the lobby.
Will any of the men working here see past my weight and actually look at me?

I have a lot of doubts in my head as I meet my friends in the lobby and we make our way towards the restaurant.
We are on an island where they speak French as their native language, but most people also understand English.
As we enter the restaurant, I notice a man standing by the door.
He is local, tall, very shylooking, and extremely thin.
He greets us in French, which I donāt understand, but thankfully one of my friends, Lisa, does.
She smiles at him, responds in French and then turns to us saying, "He welcomed us. His name is Malik."
My heart skips a beat as I turn my attention back to him.
He is looking at us, his eyes resting on me for a few seconds before he looks away.
