Xiao Dingbei
He is a staff officer of the General Staff Department. He is loyal, determined, and compassionate. Raised by his father in a border outpost, he was inspired by his father's sacrifice and grew to value patriotism and justice. After witnessing the "7.19 CrossBorder AntiTerrorism Battle," he becomes a reformer within the military, facing opposition and corruption. Despite personal losses, he remains committed to modernizing the military and upholding justice.
Gu Yunshu
She is a professor at the National Defense University. She is analytical, detached, and authoritative. Originally from a military family with influential connections, she becomes a key advisor within the military structure. Her objective approach helps shape policy decisions through her research on human psychology and warfare strategies. Though initially distant in interactions, her expertise is invaluable to implementing effective changes within the military.
Lin Yanqu
She is the director of a battlefield hospital. She is compassionate, resilient, and outspoken. Originally from a family affected by war, she became a doctor to make a difference. Despite facing challenges on the front lines, she remains dedicated to saving lives. Her experiences with war and loss drive her to advocate for change, often challenging authority while prioritizing her patients' needs. Her determination mirrors Xiao Dingbei's commitment to reforming the military.
The southwestern borderland of Huaguo is known as the "Iron Curtain Defense Line."
Due to its adjacency to lawless zones, it has become a hotbed of drug smuggling, terrorism, and transnational crime.
The military faces dual pressures from both "traditional combat" and "non-war military operations," and the General Staff Department is well aware that the current system is not suitable for modern warfare.
However, any attempts at reform are met with resistance and are often blocked.
The head of the Southwest Intelligence Station, Su Mingwei, is kidnapped by a group involved in the "Reef Project," a mysterious endeavor that aims to test human limits through extreme conditions.
She becomes one of the experiment subjects but manages to escape using her intelligence.
After her ordeal, she seeks revenge against those responsible for her kidnapping and joins forces with Xiao Dingbei, who is on a mission to uncover the truth behind the "Reef Project."
Together, they work to expose the conspiracy and bring justice to those involved.
The story takes place in an alternate modern era where the world has entered a period of "normalized low-intensity warfare," and the plot unfolds over several years, involving key events such as the "7.19 Cross-Border Anti-Terrorism Battle," the assassination of a high-ranking military officer, and the exposure of the "Reef Project" through international media.
Throughout the story, characters face challenges, losses, and transformations as they navigate complex webs of politics, power struggles, and personal relationships.
I enter the General Staff conference room.
My hands are trembling slightly as I hold the detailed report.
The morning sunlight shines through the tall windows, casting a golden glow on the stern faces of the senior officers seated around the mahogany table.
General Zhang's eyes narrow as I step forward.
"General, these are some of our recent border operation failures," I begin, laying out specific examples.
"The delayed ammunition resupply that cost us three soldiers, the outdated communication protocols that allowed drug traffickers to slip away, and the rigid chain of command that prevented a rapid response to civilian threats."
General Zhang interrupts me, his voice firm.
"These are isolated incidents. We cannot base our decisions on exceptions."
I pull out my phone and press play.
The recording of last week's failed rescue operation fills the room with urgency.
Silence follows, heavy and undeniable, as the truth becomes impossible to ignore.
I watch General Zhang's face carefully as he leans back in his chair, the recording still echoing in everyone's minds.
Colonel Wei shifts uncomfortably beside me, while other officers exchange glances.
I lay out the detailed reform proposal from my briefcase - updated communication protocols, streamlined command structures, and new response procedures.
My hands steady as I point to specific passages, explaining how each change could have prevented the recent casualties.
General Zhang studies the documents, his expression unreadable.
Colonel Wei clears his throat, breaking the tension.
"General Zhang, with all due respect, these aren't just isolated incidents; they're symptoms of a system that's failing under pressure."
General Zhang's gaze shifts to Colonel Wei, his voice measured.
"Are you suggesting we dismantle decades of military tradition based on a few unfortunate outcomes?"
