I was at the cosmetic surgery clinic with my mom because I wanted to get a nose job.
I was browsing through the brochure when I saw something that caught my attention.
It was a procedure that could give you a superpower.
I wasn't sure if I should believe it, but I was curious, so I asked the receptionist about it.
"Excuse me. I was wondering if you could tell me more about this procedure?"
"The one that gives you superpowers?"
"Yes, exactly."
"It's actually one of the clinic's experimental procedures. The doctor who created it is Dr. Eliza Voss. She specializes in cosmetic surgery, but she's also very interested in how to enhance human capabilities."
"Okay, so how does it work?"
"Well, first you have to come in for a consultation. Then Dr. Voss will explain all the details to you."
"Will it hurt?"
"Not at all. It will just feel a little bit like getting Botox."
"Okay, I think I'll schedule a consultation."
When I went in for my consultation, Dr. Eliza Voss greeted me personally.
She was a very professional woman, but there was also something slightly intimidating about her.
"I'm happy to hear that you're interested in getting a superpower, Dave. Let me show you some options."
She showed me several different superpowers that I could choose from.
One of them really caught my attention – invisibility.
I thought that it would be really cool to be invisible.
"You can just choose one of these options?"
"Yes, that's correct."
"Yes, that's correct. You can choose any one of these superpowers."
"Okay, I think I'll go with invisibility."
"Great choice. Now let me explain how the procedure works."
She explained the procedure to me in detail.
It sounded like it would be a very simple process.
"It's a very minor alteration to your genetic makeup. It won't affect you in any way other than giving you the ability to turn invisible."
"Okay, that sounds great."
"Now, let me explain how you'll be able to control your invisibility."
She explained to me how I would be able to turn myself invisible at will.
It sounded very easy.
I was excited to try it out.
"Now, there are some things you should know before we proceed. First of all, this is a very experimental procedure. There could be some unforeseen consequences."
"I understand," I said.
"Secondly, this is a very expensive procedure. It will cost $100,000."
"That's a lot of money," I said.
"But it's worth it for the ability to turn invisible."
"Exactly. And thirdly, this is a secret procedure. You can't tell anyone about it."
"I understand," I said again.
I sat in Dr. Voss's office, surrounded by the sterile scent of antiseptic.
She leaned forward, her eyes sharp and calculating.
"Dave," she began, "I've decided to offer you a scholarship for the procedure."
My heart skipped a beat.
The financial burden that had loomed over my decision was suddenly gone.
"Why?"
I asked, suspicious yet hopeful.
She smiled, a hint of mystery in her eyes.
"Your potential intrigues me," she said.
I nodded slowly, considering the opportunity that now lay before me.
I agreed, unaware that this decision would change everything.
The waiting room was a sterile white space, devoid of any warmth.
I sat on the cold metal chair, clutching the pen that would seal my fate.
Before me lay the consent form, each word a reminder of the irreversible step I was about to take.
Dr. Voss's assistant, a stern woman with sharp features and a clipboard, watched me intently.
I hesitated, my mind racing through the possibilities and consequences.
My hand shook slightly as I signed my name, sealing my fate.
The assistant nodded curtly and led me to the procedure room.
I lay on the cold metal table, my heart pounding in my chest.
Dr. Voss entered, her eyes gleaming with anticipation.
She began preparing the equipment, her movements precise and practiced.
I felt a sudden surge of doubt.
"Dr. Voss," I called out, my voice wavering slightly.
She paused, looking up from her instruments with a curious expression.
"What are the risks?"
I asked, my heart pounding in my chest.
Her eyes met mine, and she hesitated for a moment before speaking.
"The procedure is experimental," she admitted, her tone steady.
"There's a chance of side effects—temporary disorientation, difficulty controlling your invisibility at first."
I swallowed hard, processing her words.
Despite the risks, I nodded, signaling her to proceed with the transformation.
The machine hummed to life, casting an eerie glow over the room.
Dr. Voss worked with precision and focus, injecting the serum into my veins.
I felt a strange tingling sensation coursing through my body.
As the serum coursed through my body, a strange sensation washed over me.
"Dave," Dr. Voss said softly, "there's something else you should know."
I looked at her, my mind still reeling from the effects of the serum.
"What is it?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
She hesitated, her gaze steady and unwavering.
"This procedure... it might not be reversible."
The machine's hum grew louder, casting an otherworldly glow over the room.
I felt a strange warmth spreading through my veins, as if the very essence of my being was shifting.
Dr. Voss monitored the readings, her expression unreadable.
My body tingled, and I glanced down at my hands, watching in awe as they flickered in and out of visibility.
"Focus," Dr. Voss instructed calmly, guiding me to control the flickering.
I concentrated, willing myself to remain visible.
The sensation was dizzying, like teetering on the edge of a cliff.
After what felt like an eternity, the machine powered down, leaving me breathless but visible.
Dr. Voss nodded approvingly, handing me a mirror.
