It all started when I stumbled upon a brochure for a secret clinic that offered superpowers.
I know what you're thinking: superpowers?
Like in the comics I loved to read?
Yeah, like those.
The brochure didn't give away too much, but it invited anyone interested to come visit the clinic and talk to the doctors there.
Well, I was interested.
Very interested.
So, I did some research and found out that the clinic was in a skyscraper downtown, and it was only accessible through a door that looked like it led to a janitor's closet.
You had to know exactly which button to press on the elevator console to get to the floors where the clinic was located.
And you had to say the right password to the security guard who sat behind a desk that looked like it belonged in a 1970s time capsule.
The password was "Harper," and that was all I knew.
I spent the morning working on my science fair project, which wasn't going well.
I'd chosen to make a volcano, but the baking soda and vinegar mixture wasn't erupting like it was supposed to.
Instead, it just kind of fizzled over the sides of the model mountain I'd made.
My mom came over to see how I was doing, and I showed her my pathetic little volcano.
"It's supposed to erupt," I told her.
"Well, maybe you should try adding more baking soda," she suggested.

After lunch, I packed up my backpack and shoved the brochure in there, along with some cash from my piggy bank.
"Where are you going?" my mom asked.
"The library," I told her.
She nodded.
"Be home by five," she said.
I walked to the bus stop and waited for the bus that would take me downtown.
The ride seemed to take longer than usual, but I guess that's what happens when you're excited about something.
I kept looking at the brochure and rehearsing the password in my head.
I didn't want to mess it up when I got there.
When I got off the bus, I looked around.
The Invisible Boy
The skyscraper was even bigger than I'd imagined, and its reflective windows made it look like a giant mirror.
I felt a little nervous as I walked toward it, but I reminded myself that I was doing this for my science fair project. When I got inside, I looked around for the door that led to the janitor's closet.
It was hidden behind a plant, just like the brochure said it would be.
My heart was pounding as I walked over to it and gripped the handle with sweaty hands.
The security guard was sitting behind his desk, watching me with a suspicious expression on his face.
The Invisible Boy
I walked over to him and whispered "Harper" in his ear.
He nodded slowly, then pressed a button on his desk that made a click sound come from the elevator panel behind him.
The doors opened with a soft ding, revealing a panel of buttons that didn't have any numbers on them at all.
I stepped inside, pressed the unmarked button, and felt the elevator begin its silent ascent into the unknown.
The elevator doors slide open, revealing a hallway that's so white it almost hurts my eyes.
The floor is made of some kind of shiny material that looks like glass, and the walls are lined with what looks like frosted windows.
The air smells sterile, like a hospital but with a hint of something electric.
I step out of the elevator cautiously, my sneakers squeaking against the polished floor.
The hallway stretches out in front of me, curving slightly as it disappears around a corner.
I can hear the sound of voices coming from somewhere up ahead, but I can't see anyone.
I start walking slowly down the hallway, my backpack slung over one shoulder and my heart pounding in my chest.
As I get closer to the voices, I start to make out words.
"...and then he just disappeared," someone says.
"I know," another voice replies.
The Invisible Boy
"It's crazy."
I turn the corner and see a woman standing behind a curved reception desk.
She's typing on a holographic keyboard that seems to be floating in mid-air in front of her.
She looks up as I approach and smiles at me. "Hi there," she says.
"Can I help you with something?"
I stop walking and fidget with the strap on my backpack, suddenly feeling nervous and unsure of myself.
"Uh...yeah," I say.
"I'm here for...for..."
My mouth feels dry all of a sudden, and I realize that I have no idea what to say next.
What am I doing here?
Do I really want to get superpowers?
What if this is all some kind of scam?
Before I can make up my mind, the woman smiles again and stands up from behind her desk.
"Let's go," she says, walking around the desk towards me.
I take a deep breath and follow her into the unknown.
The Invisible Boy
The receptionist leads me down a winding corridor, her heels clicking rhythmically against the glass floor.
I trail behind her, my palms growing sweaty as I try not to stare at the bizarre equipment visible through the frosted glass walls.
It's like nothing I've ever seen before - things that look like modified MRI machines, pulsing tubes of neon liquid, and strange contraptions that seem to be made out of pure light.
We stop at a heavy metal door marked "Consultation Room 7" in bold silver letters.
The receptionist swipes her keycard over a sensor on the wall, and the door slides open with a soft hiss.
The Invisible Boy
I step inside, my heart hammering against my ribs.
The room is dimly lit, with towering machines lining the walls and flickering screens displaying incomprehensible data.
A man in a lab coat turns to face me, his eyes gleaming with an intensity that makes me question if I'm ready for what comes next.
