This is me, Elastigirl, in the 1970s.
My husband and I were superheroes.
We were known as Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl.
I was the body, he was the face of the team.
We were a superhero team, saving the world together.
We were amazing, bold, fearless, and so in love.
I miss those days.
I miss being a superhero.
I miss the action, the adventure, the thrill, the power.
I miss being needed, wanted, and appreciated.
I miss my old life.
But I have a new life now.
A better life?
A different life.
A more difficult life?
A more boring life?
A more exciting life?
A more fulfilling life?
A more satisfying life?
A happier life?
I don’t know.
I’m not sure.
I’m still trying to figure it out.
But one thing is for sure: I am no longer a superhero.
My husband is no longer a superhero.
We are no longer a superhero team.
We are something else now.
We are parents.
We have a son who is just six months old.
He has superpowers just like us.
He can do things that no baby can do.
He can project energy blasts from his hands just like his father.
He can also turn invisible just like his father.
The Incredibles
I sit cross-legged on the living room floor, watching JackJack play with his blocks.
The Baby Bot hovers nearby, its sensors tracking his every move.
Suddenly, the blocks clatter to the ground.
JackJack has vanished again.
I hear his delighted laughter echoing in my ears.
I stretch my arm in a wide arc, feeling for his invisible form.
My fingers brush against warm skin, and I gently scoop him up.
As I hold him, his Outline slowly fades back into view.
His powers are growing stronger each day.
Bob watches from the doorway, pride and concern mixing in his expression.
The Incredibles
I cradle JackJack in my arms, considering our options for the afternoon.
The castle walls feel confining, and his growing powers need space to develop safely.
"Baby Bot, what’s the weather like outside?"
I ask.
The Baby Bot beeps and flashes a report.
"Sunny and mild," it announces.
"Perfect for a picnic."
Bob nods enthusiastically from the doorway.
He’s already gathering JackJack’s special protective gear we designed for public outings.
I pack extra diapers and his favorite teething ring, knowing how his energy blasts tend to appear when he’s fussy.
The Incredibles
As I secure his safety harness, I catch him starting to hover slightly.
I stretch across the picnic blanket to catch him.
Luckily, we chose a secluded spot in the castle gardens, away from prying eyes.
Bob unpacks the sandwiches while the Baby Bot scans the perimeter, its sensors whirring quietly.
Suddenly, the sound of heels clicking on cobblestones breaks the tranquility.
A well-dressed woman emerges from behind the hedge, carrying a leather briefcase.
She walks directly toward us, unfazed by JackJack’s mid-air somersaults.
I pull him closer, ready to shield him if necessary.
Bob tenses beside me.
The woman stops at the edge of our blanket and reaches into her briefcase.
"Relax, I'm not here to cause trouble," she says, pulling out a stack of papers.
The Incredibles
Bob narrows his eyes, still on edge.
"Then why are you here?" he asks, his voice low and guarded.
The woman hesitates, her gaze flicking between us.
"I've been sent to explain your situation," she begins.
But before she can continue, JackJack's laughter echoes through the garden.
I watch in disbelief as the papers slip from the woman's grasp, rising into the air like autumn leaves caught in a sudden breeze.
They twist and fold themselves, creasing at impossible angles while hovering above our picnic blanket.
The woman's professional facade cracks as she gapes at the display.
Bob reaches out a hand to catch the papers, but they dance away from his fingers, continuing their aerial ballet.
Finally, they settle into a perfect origami crane.
I study the woman's face as her stern expression softens into a genuine smile.
She reaches for the origami crane, now perched on JackJack's head, and carefully unfolds it.
The papers reveal official-looking documents with an insignia I recognize - the mark of our old superhero alliance.
Bob leans forward, recognition dawning in his eyes.
"Who are you?"
I ask, my voice cautious.
The woman straightens, regaining her composure.
"My name is Agent Sarah," she replies.
"I've been tracking the recent surveillance around your castle. It’s not just paparazzi; there are hidden cameras everywhere."
She points to three spots in the garden where small cameras are concealed among the foliage.
The Incredibles
My growing paranoia is confirmed.
"We have reason to believe your family is in danger," she continues.
"That’s why we’ve prepared a safe house for you."
As she speaks, JackJack starts glowing bright blue, as if sensing the impending change.
Bob glances at me, his expression a mix of concern and determination.
"How soon can we leave?" he asks, urgency lacing his words.
Agent Sarah nods, understanding the gravity of the situation.
I lean against Bob’s shoulder, finding comfort in his solid presence.
Agent Sarah’s voice remains steady, but a hint of urgency creeps into her tone.
"The safe house is ready," she explains.
"But you must follow the evacuation protocol carefully. We have reason to believe there are already surveillance teams closing in."
As she speaks, I notice the Baby Bot extending its sensors, scanning the garden perimeter.
JackJack continues glowing blue, now floating slightly above the picnic blanket.
My eyes follow the movement in the nearby bushes - probably the surveillance teams Agent Sarah mentioned.
"We have less than an hour to pack your essentials," she continues.
"You must leave everything else behind."
Bob’s grip on my hand tightens, a silent acknowledgment of the weight of our decision.
Agent Sarah glances at her watch, then back at us.
"I'll guide you to the extraction point," she says.
Bob nods, determination hardening his features.
I rush through our bedroom, stretching my arms to reach multiple drawers simultaneously.
My fingers brush against the familiar red and black fabric of our superhero suits, a sight I hadn’t expected to see again.
I stuff them into a duffel bag, the weight of memories settling in my stomach.
Bob helps by gathering JackJack’s special flame-resistant onesies while the Baby Bot keeps watch.
I run my fingers over the "i" logo on my suit before packing it away.
The Incredibles
Sarah’s words echo in my mind as I grab our masks last, knowing we might need our hero identities sooner than expected.
The future we thought we'd left behind is now our only path forward.
I stretch across our bedroom, methodically pulling our superhero suits from their hidden compartments while Bob dresses JackJack in his protective gear.
The familiar red and black fabric feels both comforting and unsettling in my hands.
Agent Sarah waits downstairs as I slip into my costume, adjusting the mask over my eyes.
The "i" logo still fits perfectly across my chest, though the suit carries the weight of our past adventures.
When Bob emerges in his suit, JackJack claps excitedly, his tiny hands glowing.
The Incredibles
I lead our family down the winding castle staircase, my elastic powers letting me stretch ahead to check for danger while keeping hold of JackJack.
The Baby Bot rolls behind Bob, carrying our packed bags.
Agent Sarah's heels click against the stone steps as she follows, checking her watch repeatedly.
JackJack starts to fuss, his hands glowing brighter with each whimper.
I notice shadows moving outside the narrow windows - more agents, or something worse?
The Incredibles
Bob's heavy footsteps echo behind me as we reach the ground floor.
I pause at the bottom of the stairs, scanning the dimly lit foyer.
The castle's main hall stretches out before us, the grand chandelier casting flickering shadows on the walls.
JackJack squirms in my arms, his glowing hands lighting up the space.
I reach into our emergency bag and pull out fresh costumes for all of us - backup suits I'd secretly maintained.
Bob takes his, the fabric still crisp and vibrant despite years in storage.
I help JackJack into his first official super-suit, a miniature version of our design.
Agent Sarah keeps watch while I adjust the tiny mask over JackJack's face.
The Baby Bot chirps excitedly as we transform from casual clothes into our matching red and black uniforms.
"Are you sure we're ready for this?" Bob asks, his voice tinged with both excitement and doubt.
"We don't have a choice," I reply, tightening JackJack's mask, "Sarah says they're already on their way."
The Incredibles
"Then let's show them what the Incredibles can really do," Sarah interjects, her eyes gleaming with determination.
I stretch my arms to reach the hidden compartment behind the castle's stone fireplace, feeling for the familiar shape of our backup gear.
JackJack giggles as I contort myself, keeping him close.
Inside, I find spare masks, gloves, and boots - all bearing the "i" logo.
Bob helps me sort through the equipment while Agent Sarah keeps watch at the door.
Carefully, I dress JackJack in his miniature costume, adjusting the tiny mask over his glowing face.
The Incredibles
The Baby Bot beeps excitedly as I pull on my own boots and gloves, muscle memory guiding my movements.
When Bob struggles with his suit's zipper, I extend my arm to help, remembering countless times we'd done this before missions.
I stretch my arm to catch a glimpse through the castle window, spotting a teenage girl with long dark hair lurking in the shadows.
She seems to be watching us, her presence triggering a mix of curiosity and concern.
I recognize that look - it's the same one I had when I was her age, discovering my powers for the first time.
Bob notices my reaction and follows my gaze.
The girl vanishes into the darkness, only to reappear closer to the castle entrance.
The Incredibles
JackJack's hands glow brighter as if sensing her presence.
Agent Sarah whispers, "That must be Violet Parr. She's another young superhero looking for refuge."
