"Come on, Violet, you can do it!"
"Easy for you to say. You’re not the one who’s shy."
"Shy, schmyshy! If I weren’t a superhero, I’d be just as awkward as you. Probably more so."
"Yeah, right."
"Why don’t you believe me?"
"Because you’re not shy at all! You’re outgoing and friendly and popular…"
"If I were popular, would I be hanging out with you?"
"Probably not."
"Exactly. Now come on," Elastic urged.
"No," I said again.
There were about a million other things I’d rather do than go to the party that night, and most of them involved staying home and reading a book.
Or watching television.
Or practicing my archery skills.
Or going to bed early and getting a good night’s sleep.
The Incredibles
I stared at my reflection in the bedroom mirror and fidgeted with the hem of my purple dress.
Elastic sprawled across my bed, tossing a stress ball between her hands.
Every few seconds, she’d glance at her watch, reminding me that we were running late.
My stomach churned at the thought of all those people.
But Elastic’s puppy-dog eyes were wearing me down.
"Besides," she added, "Lucius is going to be there, too. You know how he gets when he has a new scheme cooking in his brain."
I sighed.
Lucius was Elastic’s twin brother and a fellow superhero.
He was also our team leader, and if he had a new plan brewing, it probably wasn’t going to be good for any of us.
"Fine," I said finally.
The Incredibles
I gave myself one last look in the mirror, then turned and grabbed my purse off the chair where it sat next to my pajamas—my soft, cozy, comfortable pajamas that I really wanted to be wearing right now.
"Fine," I said again as I headed toward the door.
"Let’s go."
"Wait, Violet," Elastic said, catching my arm.
"What is it?" I asked, trying to ignore the flutter of nerves in my stomach.
The Incredibles
"Lucius mentioned something about a secret mission tonight, and he specifically asked for you."
Following Elastic down the dimly lit street, I kept glancing over my shoulder, half-expecting Duncan to swoop down from the rooftops and grab me.
Elastic chattered on about Lucius’s plan, but I didn’t pay much attention.
I was too busy trying to keep my invisibility powers in check.
Every time a car passed, my hands flickered transparent.
It was a reflex I couldn’t control, and it made me nervous.
We reached the old warehouse where the party was being held.
Music thumped through the broken windows, and teenagers with various powers milled around outside.
Some were floating near the ceiling, while others shot energy blasts into the air.
Inside, the music was even louder, and there were more people than I’d expected.
Lucius waved us over from a corner where he was huddled with Henrietta, our team’s resident genius.
The Incredibles
They were spreading blueprints across a makeshift table.
Before I could ask what they were doing, JackJack’s cry echoed from outside.
I rushed out, Elastic close behind.
JackJack’s cries grew louder, and I followed the sound to the loading dock on the side of the warehouse.
He was floating near a second-story window, giggling as he phased through the wall and back again.
My heart pounded in my chest as I created an invisible force field platform beneath him.
Slowly, I lifted it higher, trying not to startle him.
The Incredibles
JackJack thought it was a game, bouncing and crawling across my shield as I inched closer.
Elastic stretched up to grab him, but just as she reached out, JackJack turned to flame.
I had to keep my focus on the force field even as the heat radiated from above.
Sweat drips down my face as I strain to hold the force field steady beneath JackJack’s flaming form.
The heat intensifies, making the air shimmer around us.
Elastic extends her arms upward, trying different angles to grab him, but JackJack giggles and phases through her attempts.
My arms start trembling from the effort.
Through gritted teeth, I call out to Lucius for help.
The Incredibles
He emerges from the warehouse and immediately shoots ice blasts toward JackJack, creating a cool mist that makes my brother’s flames sputter.
Through my wavering force field, I watch as Lucius methodically forms a curved path of ice from JackJack’s position down to ground level.
The crystalline structure grows upward, spiraling like a frozen water slide.
My brother’s flames have dimmed to mere sparks now, and his eyes light up at the sight.
I carefully angle my force field, guiding him toward the entrance of the slide.
JackJack squeals with delight as he begins to glide down the icy track.
The Incredibles
Below, Elastic extends her arms into a cradle formation, ready to catch him.
"Lucius, how did you know ice would work on him?" I asked, still catching my breath.
He smirked, glancing at Henrietta. "Turns out, our little genius here figured out his flame's weakness after analyzing his energy patterns."
Henrietta shrugged modestly. "It was just a hunch, but I'm glad it paid off."
Back inside the warehouse, I followed Lucius and Henrietta to their table, which was covered in blueprints of the city.
Elastic took JackJack home to rest.
Henrietta explained that she had been researching power signatures—unique energy patterns that every super emitted.
She showed me diagrams of different supers’ signatures, each with its own distinct pattern.
"So, you can track supers by their energy?"
I asked, fascinated.
Henrietta nodded.
"It's not foolproof, but it can help identify patterns. Like this one."
She pulled out a map of the city, marked with several locations where Duncan had stolen crystals recently.
My hands flickered invisible as she pointed to a pattern forming around the city's power plant.
The Incredibles
"See how his energy signature is clustering here? It means he's planning something big."
Lucius leaned in, his voice filled with determination.
"If we can predict his next target, we might be able to stop him before it's too late."
But before he could finish his sentence, the lights suddenly cut out.
The warehouse plunged into darkness.
The Incredibles
In the pitch-black warehouse, I fumbled through my purse for my phone to use its flashlight.
Lucius, however, was already creating small ice crystals that gave off a dim blue glow.
Henrietta suggested we change into our super suits, which were stored in the trunk of her car.
I hesitated, remembering the last time I wore my suit during training and it malfunctioned, turning completely invisible and leaving me standing there in my underwear.
But Henrietta assured me she had redesigned the suits with built-in stabilizers to prevent such mishaps.
The Incredibles
We snuck through the dark warehouse, Lucius's glowing ice crystals lighting our way.
As we moved, I noticed that my regular clothes kept turning invisible with my nerves, leaving floating sections of fabric.
It was as if my body was trying to blend into the shadows.
At Henrietta's car, she handed me my redesigned purple and black suit.
I slipped into the passenger seat and held the suit to my chest.
The fabric felt different - smoother and more flexible than my old one.
In the dim glow of the car's interior light, I examined the reinforced panels and stabilizing circuitry woven into the seams.
Henrietta explained that these upgrades would allow the suit to respond to my powers without becoming invisible itself.
As I changed, she pointed out the various features of the new design.
The Incredibles
I pulled on the boots and gloves, each piece automatically adjusting to fit perfectly.
Finally, I zipped up the front of the suit and looked in the mirror.
Stepping out of the car, I caught a glimpse of myself in the reflection off the warehouse windows.
The suit hugged my body, accentuating my curves in a way that made me feel both powerful and confident.
I noticed a flash of red light reflecting off the windows.
Lucius motioned for us to be quiet as we crept toward the entrance of the building.
Through the glass, I could see Duncan perched on a steel beam high above the floor.
His vulture form was illuminated by a glowing red crystal clutched in his talons.
The crystal pulsed with energy, its rhythm matching the beat of the city's power outage.
Henrietta whispered that the crystal's signature matched her research data.
I lifted my hand, creating a small force field around it to test the suit's stability.
Henrietta leaned closer, her voice barely audible.
The Incredibles
"That crystal is amplifying his powers; he's siphoning energy directly from the grid."
Lucius nodded, eyes narrowing.
"We need to get that crystal away from him before he drains the entire city."
I creep along the warehouse wall with Lucius and Henrietta, watching Duncan manipulate the crystal above us.
The crystal's red glow intensifies, making the air crackle with electricity.
Henrietta whispers instructions, guiding my fingers to a small panel near my suit's wrist.
As I press the hidden switch, blue light ripples across my suit's circuitry.
The crystal's pulsing suddenly falters, its bright red dimming to a dull pink.
The Incredibles
Duncan squawks in surprise, his grip on the beam weakening as his enhanced strength fades.
Henrietta smirked, her eyes gleaming with triumph.
"Looks like your new suit's interference tech is working, just as I planned."
Lucius glanced up at Duncan, his voice steady. "Now's our chance; we need to separate him from that crystal before he regains control."
I press another switch on my suit, and a cloaking field activates around me, extending to Lucius and Henrietta beside me.
Duncan's head jerks in our direction, his eyes narrowing as he scans the warehouse floor with his enhanced vision.
But he can't see us; we're invisible.
He screeches in frustration, flapping his wings wildly as he searches for us.
Henrietta guides my hand to a small dial on my belt.
"This controls the strength of the invisibility field," she whispers.
"Turn it up, and we can get closer without him noticing."
I adjust the dial, feeling the field expand around us.
We inch forward, staying close to the wall as we creep toward Duncan's perch.
The crystal's weakened glow starts pulsing faster, its energy surging again.
The Incredibles
My heart pounds in my chest as I realize Duncan is regaining his strength.
Lucius readies an ice blast, his eyes fixed on the crystal.
I maintain our invisibility shield while Duncan scans the warehouse for us, his talons still gripping the crystal.
Henrietta points to a red emergency lever on the far wall.
"If we pull that, it'll activate the sprinkler system," she whispers.
"It might disrupt Duncan's control over the crystal."
I nod, understanding her plan.
The Incredibles
I create a small force field bubble around the crystal to protect it from water damage.
Lucius begins forming an ice path toward the lever, staying under my shield.
The crystal's pulsing grows stronger, its energy crackling in the air.
Duncan's eyes glow bright red as he spreads his wings, sending waves of crimson energy across the warehouse.
I maintain our invisibility shield while his energy waves pulse through the warehouse, making my new suit's circuits flicker blue against the red glow.
Henrietta pulls spare costume pieces from her bag - masks, gloves, and boots.
"Put these on," she whispers.
"They're made from special materials that can redirect Duncan's power waves."
We quickly don our additional gear, and I notice the crystal's energy reflecting differently off each fabric.
The Incredibles
Henrietta explains that the costume materials are designed to absorb and channel Duncan's power waves back at him.
When he unleashes another energy blast, our enhanced suits automatically activate, creating a network of protective barriers around us.
