I rode into the mountains with my wolf brother at my side and the mysterious arcane warrior behind me.
Together, we’d go over the Dragonspine and into the Valley of Teeth to hunt down the demon lord Kanath and put a stop to his evil plans.
As the immortal wilderness queen, this was my duty.
As Zylara Thorne, I would not turn from it.
Fenrir padded along the road, his tail twitching occasionally with excitement.
He let out a soft whine as we passed a stream where he’d caught fish before, but he kept going, loyal despite his wild nature.
"I wish you’d ridden in the carriage, Wolf," I told him.
"I wish you had, too, Wolf Brother," I said to myself when he didn’t respond.
The wind picked up, whipping my hair back and forth.
It stung my eyes, so I squinted against it.
The road grew steeper and rockier as we climbed into the heart of the Dragonspine.
Boulders loomed at either side of the narrow pass.
The Immortal Wilderness Queen
The path grew so narrow that the granite walls scraped my horse’s sides as we went through.
The road was rough and uneven, and I guided him carefully over loose stones and fallen branches.
Fenrir darted ahead, his nose to the ground.
He was scouting the road for any sign of danger.
Behind us, Alaron walked in silence.
His footsteps echoed off the canyon walls, steady and measured.
We were quiet, each lost in our own thoughts.
I couldn’t tell what Fenrir was thinking.
Alaron might be pondering some arcane problem or maybe just enjoying the scenery.
I knew what I was thinking about—getting the hell out of these mountains before dark fell.
The Immortal Wilderness Queen
The Dragonspine was home to many creatures that didn’t take kindly to travelers.
My horse slipped on a patch of scree and let out a startled whinny as his hooves skittered against the rocky slope.
Pebbles bounced down the mountain, rattling and clacking against other rocks as they went.
I steadied him with gentle pressure on the reins and soft words of comfort. The afternoon sun was hot overhead, but it cast long shadows down here in the valley where the steep mountainsides blocked most of its light.
Soon, it would fall below the horizon and night would come to the mountains.
We had to be over the pass by then or we’d risk being trapped here in the dark until morning.
I watched as Fenrir came back, his ears perked up and twitching at every sound.
"Zylara," Alaron finally spoke, his voice low and resonant, "there's something you need to know about Kanath."
I turned in my saddle to look at him, feeling a chill despite the heat.
"He's not just a demon lord; he's your brother."
The Immortal Wilderness Queen
I reined my horse in when I saw a faint glimmer between two weathered boulders.
The late afternoon sun was at our backs, and the light caught on something hidden in the shadows.
I slid off my horse and approached cautiously.
Fenrir followed, his hackles up as he growled softly.
Alaron came behind, his hand glowing with a soft blue light.
He’d cast a protective spell around us, ready to defend against any trap or attack.
I pushed aside the thick vines that covered the rocky slope and found what I’d seen.
Ancient stone steps were carved into the mountain face, nearly invisible under the years of erosion and overgrowth.
They were narrow and steep, twisting upward into the heart of the mountain.
Fenrir let out a low growl, his hackles standing on end as he sniffed the air.
The Immortal Wilderness Queen
There was something here he didn’t like. Alaron stepped forward, his hand still glowing with magic.
He reached out to touch one of the steps, and a faint blue light flared around him.
He was testing for traps, but nothing happened.
The air was heavy with the scent of damp earth and moss, but there was something else—a faint tang of metal that made my mouth water.
I couldn’t place it, but it seemed familiar somehow.
I took a deep breath and started up the narrow path.
It was steep and treacherous, forcing me to proceed single file with my back against the mountain wall and my feet on the narrow treads.
Fenrir followed close behind me, his eyes fixed on mine as he padded along the narrow path.
Alaron brought up the rear, his hand still glowing with protective magic. The path twisted upward until we were above the trees, climbing through a rocky pass where only scrubby bushes grew in the thin soil.
The air grew colder as we climbed higher until it was almost chilly despite the late afternoon heat below us in the valley.
The Immortal Wilderness Queen
Finally, we reached a small plateau carved into the mountainside where we could stand safely and look around.
My breath caught in my throat when I saw what was there—racks of gleaming weapons stood arranged in perfect rows across the small clearing.
