It was a bloody freezing day and I was not looking forward to having PE.
I was standing in the changing room with Leon Hendrick, Tom Frazer and Jack Bennett, who was my best mate at school.
I didn't mind the lads, but Leon was a bit of a bully and loved taking the piss out of me.
In the freezing changing room, I shivered as I slipped my shorts on.
I could feel the cold air biting at my skin, and I knew it was going to be a long day.
Leon gave me a smirk as he saw the goosebumps on my skin.
"Looks like you're excited to see me," he said with a laugh.
I rolled my eyes and ignored him, focusing on getting dressed.
Jack, who was standing next to me, gave me a nod of encouragement.
He knew how much I hated Leon's antics, but he also knew that I could handle myself.
Tom, who was still fumbling with his t-shirt, cursed under his breath as he struggled to get it over his head.
"I hate this bloody cold," he muttered.
Finally, we were all dressed and ready to head outside.
The Icy Day
The cold air hit us like a slap in the face as we stepped out onto the field.
Leon shoved me playfully, but I could see the malice in his eyes.
I gritted my teeth and kept walking, determined not to let him get to me. Jack stayed close by my side, offering silent support as we made our way to where Mr. Hendrickson was waiting for us.
The teacher was standing with his arms crossed, his expression stern as he watched us approach.
"Alright, boys," he said as we lined up in front of him.
The Icy Day
"Today we're going to be doing some drills. I want you all to give it your best."
We nodded in unison, our breath visible in the freezing air.
Mr. Hendrickson barked out the first command.
"Burpees! Now!"
We all dropped to the ground, our palms stinging against the frost-covered grass.
Leon was next to me, and I could see him deliberately kicking dirt onto my face as he did his burpees.
I gritted my teeth and kept going, refusing to let him get to me.
Jack was on my other side, and I could see him glancing over at me with concern.
But I gave him a quick nod, letting him know that I was okay.
"Mountain climbers! Now!"
Mr. Hendrickson shouted.
We quickly switched to the new exercise, our legs pumping furiously as we tried to keep up with the teacher's demands.
The Icy Day
My muscles were starting to ache from the cold, but I pushed through it, determined not to show any weakness. As we continued with the drills, I could feel the cold seeping into my bones.
My fingers were numb and my toes were starting to hurt from the cold ground beneath me.
But I kept going, refusing to give in to the pain.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Mr. Hendrickson blew his whistle.
"Alright, boys," he said.
"That's enough for today."
We all sprang to our feet, grateful for the reprieve.
Jack caught my eye and mouthed "Nike after this," reminding me of our plan to sneak off to the outlet store after class.
I nodded in agreement, already planning our escape route in my mind.
Tom was next to us, shivering uncontrollably as he tried to catch his breath.
The Icy Day
"I can't believe we have to do this every week," he groaned.
Leon sauntered over, a smug grin plastered on his face.
"What's the matter, Tom? Can't handle a little exercise?" he taunted.
Jack stepped in, his voice steady and calm. "Leave it, Leon. We all know you're just trying to impress your dad."
As we trudge back to the changing rooms, I pull Jack aside near the rusty bike racks.
My muscles are still burning from the intense workout, and I can feel the sweat drying on my skin in the cold air.
"Hey, what're you planning to get at Nike?"
I ask, keeping my voice low so Leon can't hear.
Jack unzips his gym bag and pulls out a crumpled catalog.
He flips through the pages, pointing to a pair of bright orange football boots.
"These beauties," he grins, his face still flushed from the cold.
"They've been calling my name for months."
I glance over at Leon, who's lingering nearby, clearly eavesdropping on our conversation.
Jack quickly stuffs the catalog back into his bag, but not before I catch a glimpse of the price tag: £120.
The Icy Day
"How're you gonna afford those?" I whisper, glancing nervously at Leon.
Jack leans in closer, his voice barely audible. "I've been saving up from my paper route, but I'm still short."
I nod, understanding the unspoken request. "I'll cover the rest, mate," I say, knowing this could be our chance to finally outrun Leon on the field.
I grab my backpack from my locker, still feeling the soreness in my muscles from PE.
I meet Jack by the water fountain and we peek around the corner, scanning the corridor for Leon.
He usually hangs out near the cafeteria after class, so we should be clear.
The corridor is mostly empty except for a few year sevens rushing to their next class.
Jack points to the emergency exit near the art room.
The Icy Day
It's our best shot at getting out unnoticed.
We time our move carefully, waiting until the caretaker finishes mopping the floor and wheels his bucket around the corner.
As soon as he's out of sight, we speed-walk towards the exit.
Jack pushes down on the bar slowly, trying not to make any noise.
We huddle together behind the art building, counting our saved allowance.
My legs are still sore from PE, and I can feel the cold seeping into my bones.
I rub my arms, trying to warm myself up.
"Shit, it's freezing," I mutter through chattering teeth.
Jack nods in agreement, his breath visible in the cold air.
"We should make a detour before Nike," I say, glancing at my watch.
"I need to get some warmer gear for next week's PE."
Jack looks at me quizzically, but I can see the understanding in his eyes.
"Sports Direct?" he asks.
I nod, already planning our route.
We lead the way, cutting through the parking lot and crossing the street.
The cold wind stings my face, and I can feel the chill seeping into my bones.
We walk quickly, our breath visible in the chilly air.
After a few minutes of walking, we reach the strip mall where Sports Direct is located.
We enter the store, scanning the aisles for anything that might help us stay warm.
Jack picks up a pair of gloves, while I find a thick jacket on sale.
I hold it up against myself, checking the fit in the mirror.
"Hey, check this out," I call to Jack, holding up the jacket.
He gives me a thumbs-up and continues browsing through the racks.
I head to the checkout counter, eager to get back to our mission to get those football boots.
The Icy Day
As I'm paying for my new gear, I see Leon entering the store out of the corner of my eye.
He scans the aisles, looking for us.
I quickly pay for my stuff and grab Jack's arm, pulling him towards the back door. "Leon's here," I whisper urgently.
We slip out of the store unnoticed, just as Leon is about to spot us.
We make our way to Nike, determined to get those football boots and outrun Leon once and for all.
The Icy Day
As we enter the outlet store, I pull out the money from my backpack and hand it over to Jack.
"Go get 'em," I say with a grin.
While Jack heads to the football section, I linger by the running gear.
My eyes fall on a display of thermal leggings.
I shiver as I remember how my legs felt during PE last week - frozen and numb.
I check the price tags - £30 for Nike Pro compression tights.
I pull a black pair from the rack, imagining how warm they would feel under my PE shorts next week.
The Icy Day
No one would even know I'm wearing them, not even Leon.
I make my way to the changing room, eager to try them on.
As I enter the cubicle, I glance at myself in the mirror.
I can see Leon's reflection passing by outside, looking for me.
Standing in the cramped cubicle, I carefully pull the black compression tights up my legs.
The material feels snug and warm against my skin - exactly what I need for Hendrickson's brutal winter sessions.
I check my reflection, making sure the tights aren't visible below my shorts.
Through the gap under the door, I see Leon's trainers passing by again.
My heart races as I quickly gather my old clothes and stuff them in my backpack.
The Icy Day
I hear Jack's voice outside the cubicle, low and urgent.
"He's heading towards the football section now," he whispers.
I nod to myself, relieved, and whisper back, "Let's meet by the exit in five."
