"I am not giving you any homework today. I know that you all have a lot of work to do in other classes and I do not want to add to your workload."
The class cheered.
I was happy, but then I had an idea.
"Mr. Johnson, can I talk to you for a minute?"
He nodded and I stood up and walked outside into the hallway.
He followed me and we stood in an empty part of the hallway.
"What is it, Tommy?"
I took a deep breath before speaking.
"I know that you just said that you weren't giving us any homework today, but I want to convince you to never give us homework."
He raised an eyebrow.
"Go on."
"Well, homework is bad for us. It stresses us out and takes away from the little time that we have to do things we enjoy. It makes us hate school and everything it represents. It makes us lazy and unmotivated in class because we know we will just have to do a ton of work when we get home."
He looked skeptical.
"I don't think that homework is as bad as you say it is."
"Have you ever looked at any research about it?"
He shook his head.
"No, I haven't."
