I was sitting in my eighth-grade class when I first saw her.
I had to borrow an eraser from the girl on my right, so I turned to ask her.
"May I see your eraser?"
I asked and waited for her response.
When she handed it over, I got my first glance of her.
She had a head full of blonde hair, hanging on her back.
Her smoky blue eyes looked up at me when I took the eraser when she was holding it out for me.
For a second, our fingers touched and at that moment, I knew that I had to get to know her.
"Thanks," I said when I took it from her and turned to erase my mistakes on my paper.
I glanced back at her several times while I was erasing.
She was reading in her book, Lord of the Rings.
She seemed smart to me.
Most girls didn’t read that kind of stuff.
They mostly read Nicholas Sparks books or Harry Potter ones.
When I finished, I turned back to her and held the eraser in my hand, waiting for her to take it.
When she looked up from her book, I gave her a small smile before handing the eraser back to her.
"Thanks," she said and took it from me.
"No problem."
When the bell rang, I gathered my things and put them in my backpack.
I pretended to organize my stuff when she got up from her desk.
I was waiting for her to turn around so I could talk to her.
When she turned around, I stood up and walked over to her.
"Hey, I’m Devin," I said, trying to sound casual.
She stopped what she was doing and looked at me with a hint of curiosity.
"Ella," she said softly.
I nodded my head at her.
I had learned her name.
That was a start.
"So, you like Tolkien?"
I asked, looking at the book in her hand.
She smiled faintly at me.
"Yeah, it’s one of my favorites."
"Maybe we could talk about it sometime?"
I asked her, hoping that she would say yes.
She nodded her head at me.
"Yeah, that would be great."
I smiled at her and turned to walk away.
I was going to ask her if she wanted to sit with me at lunch, but I didn’t have the guts to do it.
I walked over to my locker and put my things in it.
I grabbed my lunch and headed out to the courtyard.
When I got there, I saw Ella sitting by herself.
I walked over to her and sat down next to her.
"Hey," I said softly.
She looked up at me and smiled.
"Hey."
We sat there for a few minutes before I decided to talk to her again.
"Hey, Ella?"
I said softly.
"Yeah?"She looked up at me from her book.
"Do you want to talk about Tolkien over lunch?"
I asked her, hoping that she would say yes.
She nodded her head at me and went back to reading her book. I was nervous as we ate our lunch and talked about Tolkien’s books.
I had never been this nervous around a girl before, but Ella was different from the other girls in my class.
She was smart and beautiful, and I couldn’t help but stare at her when she wasn’t looking at me.
"So, what do you think of Middle-earth?"
Ella asked me as she took a bite of her sandwich.
"It’s amazing," I said honestly.
"I love how he created this whole world with its own history. It’s so detailed."
Ella nodded in agreement with me.
"Yeah, it is. He must have been a genius."
"He must have been," I agreed with her.
"I mean, he created this whole world with its own history. It’s so detailed."
Ella smiled faintly at me.
"Yeah, it is."
We sat there for a few minutes before Ella spoke again.
"So, what do you think of the hobbits?"
I shrugged my shoulders at her question.
"They’re okay, I guess."
Ella laughed softly at my answer.
"I love them," she said honestly.
"They’re so cute."
"They are," I agreed with her honestly.
"I love how they live in their little hobbit holes."
Ella nodded in agreement with me.
"Yeah, they do. They’re so cute."
We sat there for a few minutes before Ella spoke again. "So, what do you think of Gandalf?"
She asked me as she took another bite of her sandwich.
"He’s amazing," I said honestly.
"He’s so powerful."
As we continued talking, I realized that this was the beginning of something new.
