I was paired with Caspian Blackwood the entire trip.
Of course I was.
Because God hates me.
So on the bus ride to the hotel, I sat on the exact seat behind him so he could put his feet on my lap and I could massage his perfect long legs because that is what a good fucking girlfriend he has does.
Ugh.
Finally, the bus pulled into the parking lot of our hotel, and we all got off.
I waited for Caspian to get off before I did, and he didn't notice me standing right behind him as he stretched his arms and yawned like the most handsome man alive.
Once everyone was off the bus, our teacher told us to meet in the lobby to check in to our rooms.
Caspian finally noticed me and smiled before walking off toward the lobby.
I followed after him because I had no other choice but to meet him there.
When we got there, he was talking to Miss Potts about something.
I stood next to him and waited quietly until she finished with him and then turned to me.
"Alright, Veronica, Caspian has already gotten your key. Just head up to your room and get settled. We will meet up in an hour in the lobby," she said, looking down at me and smiling.
I nodded and looked over at Caspian, who was now chatting with his friends near the front desk.
He had our room key in his hand, holding it loosely between his fingers as he laughed at something Jake said.
I watched him for a moment before I swallowed and walked over to him.
The conversation died as I approached.
Caspian didn't look at me as he extended the key card.
I snatched it quickly, our fingers brushing against each other.
The plastic was cold and smooth against my skin.
Instead of waiting for him, I turned toward the elevators, my wheeled suitcase squeaking against the marble floor behind me.
The elevator doors opened with a soft ding, and I stood rigidly as Caspian stepped in beside me.
His arm settled around my shoulders, heavy and warm.
He smelled so good, like his expensive cologne, and his body wash mixed together.
It was a scent I knew well, and it made my stomach clench with anxiety.
I stood still as he wheeled both of our suitcases into the elevator with his free hand.
I stared at the floor numbers on the wall as they lit up, feeling his thumb absently stroking my shoulder.
When we got to our floor, we got off and walked down the narrow hallway to room 412.
Caspian took the key from me and opened the door before walking inside first.
He dropped his bag by the dresser and turned around to look at me as I stood in the doorway.
I stepped inside and closed the door behind me, my suitcase rolling quietly into the room.
The curtains were drawn, so the room was dimly lit.
The single queen-sized bed took up most of the room, long shadows stretching across the floor.
My stomach dropped at the sight of it.
Caspian closed the door behind me with a soft click, and it echoed through the room.
I walked over to the window and pulled back the curtain, pretending to adjust them as I thought.
The pillows on the bed looked so fluffy and comfortable.
I could sleep on them on the floor, or maybe I could call Miss Potts and tell her there was a problem with our room.
But I knew she would just send Caspian out to find another room, and he would be angry with me for making him do that.
Behind me, I heard Caspian's footsteps coming closer.
I stood frozen at the window, my fingers still gripping the curtain fabric.
The afternoon sun streamed through the gap in the drapes, casting long shadows across the carpeted floor.
My pulse quickened as he stopped directly behind me, close enough that I could feel the warmth radiating from his body.
Neither of us spoke.
The air conditioning hummed quietly overhead.
I started to turn around, planning to step away from him and sit on the bed, but his hand caught my wrist.
His grip was gentle but firm.
I turned around slowly, my back pressing against the window.
Caspian kept his hand wrapped around my wrist as I faced him.
His eyes were darker than usual, the dim light in the room making them look almost black.
My breath caught in my throat as his free hand came up to my face.
His thumb brushed across my cheek, and I tried to look away from him, but I couldn't.
He leaned closer to me, his cologne filling my nostrils and making me dizzy.
My hands gripped the windowsill behind me as he tilted my chin up with his thumb.
Time seemed to slow down as he moved closer to me, his breath hot against my lips.
Just before our lips touched, a door slammed shut in the hallway outside our room, making me jump.
My heart hammered in my chest as I stepped closer to Caspian, my back pressing against his chest.
His hands settled on my hips, steadying me as I tilted my head back against his shoulder.
The curtains were still half-open, casting long shadows across the carpeted floor.
I turned in his arms, my fingers trembling as they found the collar of his shirt.
His breath caught as I traced the edge of the fabric.
The air was thick between us.
I rose onto my tiptoes, and his eyes darkened as his hands tightened on my waist.
The silence shattered as the fire alarm blared, pulling us abruptly back to reality.
