I stared blankly at the earth below, my eyes gazing at it with sadness.
My long white hair fell down my back in a mess, reaching all the way down to my hips.
My hetrochromic eyes, a mix of gold and silver, gazed at the earth with a sorrow that I couldn't hide.
"What's wrong?"
A gentle voice asked from behind me.
I turned my head to look at my wife, Shi Ruolan.
She had also come to look at the earth, just like I had.
Her eyes were the same as mine, a combination of gold and silver.
We were both ethereal entities, and we could see into the souls of others.
We could see their suffering, and it was something that we couldn't hide from our eyes.
I sighed, not knowing what to say.
I didn't want to tell her what I had seen, but I knew that she already saw it as well.
The Healer of The Abyss
I turned back to face the earth, my fingers curling against the barrier that separated our realm from theirs.
I could see a soul below, a young mother who was cradling her sick child in her arms.
Her anguish was like a physical wound that I could feel.
Ruolan placed her hand over mine, her touch warm and familiar.
We watched together as the mother's tears fell down her face, her prayers echoing in our consciousness.
The child's life force was weak, and it was clear that they wouldn't survive for much longer.
My wife's grip on my hand tightened when she felt me wanting to reach through the barrier and help them.
"We can't interfere," she said gently.
"But how can we just stand by and watch them suffer?" I replied, my voice filled with frustration.
Ruolan sighed softly, her eyes reflecting the weight of countless similar moments.
The Healer of The Abyss
"Our duty is to observe and guide, not to alter the course of their destinies."
I slumped against the crystalline barrier, my fingers pressed against its cold surface as I tracked the mother's movements below.
She was singing a lullaby now, her voice cracking as she stroked her child's fevered forehead.
Ruolan's hand squeezed my shoulder, but I couldn't look away from the scene unfolding before us.
The child's soul flickered weakly, like a candle in the wind, while the mother's burned bright with determination and despair.
My powers let me see every detail of their pain - the way their souls reached for each other, how the child's light dimmed with each labored breath.
