Aiko Nakamura: *looks down, fidgets with fingers* I overreacted a bit, didn’t I?
It’s just... that place gives me the creeps.
I don’t know.
It’s weird and beautiful at the same time...
I: Lol real
Aiko Nakamura: *blushes slightly, still avoiding direct eye contact* Yeah, I guess it’s pretty far-fetched.
I was just letting my imagination run wild.
I am sorry if I scared you.
I: You didn’t scare me at all!
You look beautiful today, btw.
Aiko Nakamura: *smiles shyly, clings to her bag* T-thank you...
I was thinking about what you said about the old library, though.
Aiko Nakamura: It might be a good idea to put our minds together and figure out what is going on, huh?
Maybe after school tomorrow?
I: That sounds like a plan!
But I think I will pass on the old library for today.
Aiko Nakamura: *nods gently* Okay...
If you want, though, we could grab some books from there that might help us out and then meet up at the new library.
That way, you won’t have to go inside if you don’t want to.
Does that sound good?
Me: Yeah!
That would be great!
Thank you!
Aiko Nakamura: *smiles softly* Of course.
Rely on me anytime you need to!
Aiko Nakamura: *smiles in agreement, pulls out her phone to check the time* How about 3:30?
By the entrance of the new library?
I: Sounds perfect!
I will meet you there.
Me: Thanks again!
Have a great day!
Aiko Nakamura: *nods, smiling shyly* You too!
See you tomorrow!
The afternoon sun streams through the corridor windows, casting long shadows across the floor.
Aiko’s fingers trace patterns on her bag strap as she explains which books she wants to get from the old library.
Most of them are local history texts or architectural records.
The bell rings, interrupting us.
Aiko Nakamura: *glances up, eyes wide with realization* Wait, did you hear that part about the secret room in the old library?
I: *raises an eyebrow, intrigued* Secret room? No, you didn’t mention that before.
Aiko Nakamura: *leans in closer, lowering her voice* I overheard some teachers talking about it; they said it’s hidden behind a false wall in the basement.
I: *nods, leaning against the corridor wall* Yeah, I heard that rumor too.
But I thought it was just a myth.
Aiko Nakamura: *pauses, gathering her thoughts* Actually, what if we check it out?
Together?
I: *eyes widening in surprise* You mean... right now?
Aiko Nakamura: *nods, heart racing* Yeah.
I have a plan.
We will bring flashlights and meet by the back entrance; fewer students pass by that way.
Then we can stick together the whole time.
The basement door should be unlocked since the janitor does rounds there in the afternoon.
*pulls out her phone, opens an old blueprint of the library she found online*
See?
This is where the basement room is supposed to be.
I: *nods, studying the blueprint* Alright.
Let’s do it!
We walk quietly down the empty hallway, passing rows of closed classroom doors.
The janitor’s office door is slightly ajar, and we can hear the sound of cleaning supplies being organized inside.
We duck behind a nearby trash bin, peeking around it to see what is happening.
Mr. Tanaka is inside, his back turned to us as he puts away bottles of disinfectant and paper towels.
On the far wall, there is a key rack with dozens of labeled keys hanging in neat rows.
Aiko points to the key rack, her eyes shining with determination.
The basement key set has a distinctive red tag attached to it.
Mr. Tanaka moves toward the doorway, and we quickly hide behind the trash bin again.
He closes the door behind him and turns the corner, his footsteps fading into the distance.
Aiko slips inside the office while I keep watch in the hallway.
I: *whispers urgently* Be quick, Aiko, we don’t have much time.
Aiko Nakamura: *nods, grabbing the key with the red tag* Got it!
I: *glances around nervously* Let’s get out of here before anyone sees us.
