In a small town, in the middle of nowhere, there was a legend about a mansion on the outskirts.
It was said that anyone who went in would never come out again.
It was a silly story that scared little kids, but four friends decided to go in anyway for some thrills.
One night, they drove up to the front of the house and got out of the car.
The mansion loomed before them in all its glory.
The four stared up at the house in awe.
They had heard stories about it, but they had never seen it before.
It was huge and beautiful with its big windows and beautifully carved wood.
It looked like something straight out of a fairy tale.
The group consisted of Lily, Jake, Emily, and Mark.
They were all college students and friends.
Lily was the adventurous one.
She loved exploring abandoned places and made her friends go with her on all her adventures.
Jake was Lily’s best friend and the voice of reason in their group.
He always went along with Lily’s plans even though he never wanted to explore abandoned places.
Emily and Mark were also fellow college students.
Emily was always timid about going into places, while Mark was just the opposite.

Lily led the group toward the entrance.
The beam of her flashlight danced across the weathered steps leading up to the porch.
The wooden porch creaked under their feet as they approached the massive front door.
Emily clutched Mark’s arm, while Jake stayed close behind Lily.
The door handle was cold and crusty with rust when Lily grasped it.
She turned it slowly, feeling the mechanism resist, then give way with a grinding sound.
A gust of stale air hit them in the face.
Dust particles swirled in their flashlight beams.
The foyer beyond was a black void.
Lily took one step forward, but Jake’s hand caught her shoulder.

"Wait," he whispered.
She shrugged off his grip and stepped forward, her own light sweeping the room.
Faded wallpaper peeled from the walls, and cobwebs hung like tattered flags.
A staircase curved upward to the left, its wooden railings worn smooth by years of use.
To the right was a doorway that led into darkness.
Emily’s voice was barely audible.
"Maybe we should go back."
Mark was already moving deeper into the house, his flashlight beam dancing across walls lined with cracked mirrors.
Jake stayed close behind Lily, his breath warm on the back of her neck as they inched forward.
The floorboards groaned under their weight, stirring up clouds of dust that danced in the light beams.
The Haunted Mansion
They were halfway to the stairs when something hit the floor above them.
The sound echoed through the empty halls, reverberating off the walls.
Lily stopped, her eyes wide.
"Did you hear that?" she asked, her voice a mix of excitement and fear.
Mark turned to the group, his face serious. "I think someone else is here."
