Daniel has sandy blonde hair, blue eyes, and wears his baseball cap forward.
He is grumpy as hell, but loyal to those he cares about.
He is a country boy through and through, and I would say he is the biggest tomboy I have ever met in my life.
I don’t mean he is gay or anything; he is straight and has been with many women in his life.
He just likes things that women don’t normally like, and that’s okay; we all have our quirks.
Daniel is tall, lean, sexy, and handsome.
He has a hard body; you can tell he works out from all the muscles I see.
I know he is a Magician; I know his family has money, but he doesn’t act like it.
He is one of the most humble people I have ever met in my life, and I am so glad that I am friends with him.
I don’t know what I would do without him, but hopefully I will never have to find out.
Daniel knows the real me; he knows everything about me, and he doesn’t judge me.
He accepts me for who I am and that means the world to me.
The Grumpiest Alphas
I follow Daniel across the muddy yard towards the old red barn.
Our boots leave deep prints in the wet earth as we make our way to the entrance.
The evening sun casts long shadows through the weathered boards of the barn, and I can hear the distant sound of birds chirping in the nearby trees.
Daniel pulls open the heavy wooden door, and we step inside.
The familiar scent of hay and leather fills my nose as we make our way to the ladder that leads up to the hayloft.
Daniel climbs up first, his boots scraping against the rungs of the ladder.
I follow behind him, my hands gripping the rough wood as I pull myself up.
Once we are both in the loft, Daniel reaches down and pulls me up into a sitting position next to him.
He knows that I can do it myself, but he always insists on helping me anyway. We settle into our usual spot near one of the windows, where a patch of sunlight warms the hay beneath us.
Daniel leans back against one of the wooden beams that supports the loft, adjusting his baseball cap so that it is pulled low over his eyes.
The Grumpiest Alphas
I pick at loose strands of hay, running them between my fingers as I look out the window at the fields beyond.
"Do you ever wonder why I keep coming back to this place?" Daniel asks, his voice low and thoughtful.
"Because it's the only place where you can be yourself without all the magic and money getting in the way," I reply, glancing at him.
He chuckles softly, "Yeah, but there's more to it—I'm leaving soon, and I wanted to tell you first."
I notice his shoulders tense slightly as he speaks, and I turn to look at him.
But before I can say anything, a strange smell fills the air.
It's acrid and bitter, like something is burning.
I get up and walk over to the ladder, but Daniel grabs my wrist and pulls me back.
"Wait," he whispers, his eyes peering down through the gaps in the wooden planks that make up the floor of the loft.
I follow his gaze, and see thin wisps of gray smoke curling up from below.
The smoke gets thicker by the second, and I can feel the heat starting to rise.
"We need to get out of here," Daniel says urgently, grabbing my hand and pulling me towards the ladder.
We climb down as fast as we can, but when we reach the barn door, it won't budge when Daniel yanks on it.
He curses under his breath and tries again, but it still won't open. "What's going on?" he mutters, ramming his shoulder into the door twice more.

The smoke is getting thicker now, making my eyes water.
I pull my shirt up over my nose and mouth to try and filter out some of the smoke.
Daniel is still trying to get the door open, but it's no use.
Through watering eyes, I scan the barn for another way out.
Daniel's still slamming against the door when my foot catches on something metal.
I drop down to my knees and brush away some of the hay that's covering it.
It looks like a rusty ring handle.
"Daniel!"
I cough out, waving him over.
He stumbles towards me, his eyes red from the smoke.
Together, we grab hold of the ring and pull.
The wooden planks that make up the floor of the barn groan as they lift up, revealing a dark hole beneath.
Daniel grabs one of the lanterns that has fallen from the loft and lights it with a match from his pocket.
The Grumpiest Alphas
He lowers himself down into the hole first, his boots hitting dirt about six feet down.
He reaches up and grabs my waist, helping me down after him.
The smoke follows us, so we crouch low to the ground as we make our way deeper into the tunnel.
Daniel holds the lantern out in front of him, casting flickering shadows on the rough-hewn walls.
The air is musty and damp, and I can hear the sound of dripping water echoing off the wooden support beams that stretch up into darkness above us.
The Grumpiest Alphas
The tunnel slopes downward, barely wide enough for our shoulders to fit through side by side.
As we walk, I can feel dirt crumbling from the ceiling above us, and the sound of the barn creaking and groaning echoes through the passageway.
I stumble on the uneven ground, catching myself by grabbing onto Daniel's shirt.
I press close behind Daniel, my shoulders scraping against the dirt walls.
The lantern light flickers across the rough-hewn support beams, casting dancing shadows that make the space feel even tighter than it already is.
Daniel's breathing comes out ragged, matching the labored gasps I'm taking in the stale air.
When a loud crack echoes from behind us, Daniel quickens his pace.
I stumble trying to keep up with him, my cap getting knocked sideways by a low beam.
The Grumpiest Alphas
The tunnel slopes downward more sharply now, and water splashes under our feet with each step.
Ahead of us, Daniel suddenly stops, holding the lantern higher to illuminate the passage ahead.
The light falls on a door set into the wall of the tunnel.
It's made of wood, with old-fashioned hinges and a large iron knocker in the shape of a lion's head.
The door is covered in dirt and cobwebs, and it looks like it hasn't been opened in years.
Daniel holds the lantern up higher, revealing strange markings carved into the wood around the frame.
I lean forward to get a closer look, tracing the intricate patterns with my finger.
They're unlike anything I've ever seen before - they look almost like some sort of code.
Daniel runs his hand along the edge of the door, searching for a handle or lock.
But there's nothing - just smooth wood under our fingertips.
I reach out to touch the door, and as soon as my skin makes contact with it, I feel a jolt run through my body.
The door feels warm to the touch, almost like it's alive. I pull my hand back quickly, startled by the sensation.
The Grumpiest Alphas
Daniel looks at me curiously, but I just shake my head, unsure of what to say.
He turns his attention back to the door, running his hands over it again.
As he searches, I hear another loud crash from behind us - it sounds like something has fallen through the ceiling of the barn.
The sound echoes through the tunnel, making it seem even more ominous than before.
Suddenly, Daniel lets out a triumphant cry and steps back from the door.
The Grumpiest Alphas
In his hand is a small brass handle that he must have found hidden in one of the carvings on the door.
I hold my breath as he grips the handle with both hands, his knuckles white from tension.
The metal groans as he twists it clockwise, and the heavy wooden door creaks open slowly.
The sound echoes through the tunnel, and dirt sprinkles down from the vibration, dusting our shoulders.
Daniel raises the lantern higher, casting flickering shadows on the walls around us.
But even the yellow light of the lantern can't penetrate the strange bluish glow that emanates from beyond the door.
The Grumpiest Alphas
The air that wafts out from the opening is musty and metallic, and I can feel a faint humming noise vibrating through my body.
I shift closer to Daniel, our shoulders touching as we stare into the doorway.
The humming grows louder, making my teeth chatter.
Daniel's hand bumps against mine as he adjusts his grip on the lantern, and his fingers linger there for a moment before he pulls away.
The touch sends a different kind of shiver through me.
When I look up at him, his blue eyes catch the strange light from the doorway, making them seem to glow.
His expression softens from its usual grumpiness, and I can see his breath catch in his throat.
But before I can process what's happening between us, a loud crash echoes from behind us in the tunnel, snapping us back to reality.
"Did you hear that?" Daniel asks, his voice barely above a whisper, eyes darting back to the darkness behind us.
"Yeah," I reply, trying to keep my voice steady, "but whatever's in there seems more important right now."
He nods, a determined look settling on his face. "Then let's find out what this place is hiding."
The Grumpiest Alphas
I lean against the damp tunnel wall, my heart still racing from our narrow escape and Daniel's tone.
The blue light from beyond the door casts strange shadows on his face as he shifts the lantern to his other hand.
Dirt continues falling around us, and the tunnel groans ominously.
Daniel removes his cap, running fingers through his sandy blonde hair - something he never does.
The gesture makes my stomach twist with worry.
The Grumpiest Alphas
He opens his mouth to speak, but another crash from the tunnel cuts him off.
He grabs my arm, pulling me through the doorway instead.
The door slams shut behind us, sealing us in with the unknown.
I stumble in the darkness as my eyes adjust to the blue glow surrounding us.
The humming grows stronger, making my teeth chatter.
Daniel's grip on my arm loosens, but he doesn't let go.
Instead, he pulls me closer until I can feel his breath on my face.
His other hand finds my shoulder, steadying me.
The Grumpiest Alphas
The lantern light catches his face - he's not wearing his cap anymore, and his sandy hair is messy from running.
His blue eyes lock onto mine, and he leans in close to my ear.
I stand frozen, his warm breath tickling my ear.
His hand is still gripping my shoulder, and I can feel his body heat radiating towards me.
The blue glow pulses around us, casting strange shadows across his uncapped head.
My legs feel weak from all the running, and I grab a fistful of his shirt to keep myself upright.
He shifts his weight slightly, pulling back just enough to look at my face.
The Grumpiest Alphas
His usual grumpy expression is gone, replaced by something softer.
The humming in the air grows stronger, making it hard to hear anything else.
He opens his mouth to say something, but before any words come out, he tugs me against his chest.
I freeze against his chest, his heartbeat fast under my ear.
His arms tighten around me as the blue light pulses brighter.
Without warning, he cups my face with both hands, his calloused fingers rough against my cheeks.
The lantern drops to the ground with a clang, rolling away into the darkness.
His blue eyes search mine intensely, all his usual grumpiness gone.
The Grumpiest Alphas
My breath catches when his thumb brushes over one of my tiny freckles.
"Sophie," he whispers hoarsely, "I should've done this a long time ago."
I feel his calloused fingers trace from my freckle down to my chin.
His touch is so gentle, nothing like his usual roughness.
The blue light pulses around us, making it hard to see his face clearly.
He leans in closer, and my heart pounds so hard I can barely hear the humming anymore.
His other hand slides to the back of my neck, and I notice his fingers are trembling slightly.
When his lips brush against mine, they're soft and uncertain.
I completely freeze.
The kiss is nothing like I imagined - it's better and worse and terrifying all at once.
Daniel pulls back slightly, his breath mingling with mine.
"Sophie, there's something I need to tell you," he murmurs, his voice barely audible over the humming.
The Grumpiest Alphas
I nod, my heart racing, "What is it, Daniel?"
I lean back just a little in his arms, trying to get a better look at his face.
The blue light pulses around us, making it hard to see.
He swallows, and I can tell he's struggling to find the right words.
His hands shake slightly against my shoulders, and he keeps opening and closing his mouth.
The humming is getting louder, making it even harder to hear anything else.
The Grumpiest Alphas
Finally, Daniel pulls me closer, his voice rough and low.
"Sophie," he starts to say, but before he can finish, there's a loud crash from behind the door.
We both jump, and Daniel's arms tighten protectively around me.
I stand there trembling in his arms, and there's another crash.
It sounds like someone is trying to break down the door.
Daniel's grip on me loosens a bit, but he doesn't let me go completely.
He moves one hand to brush my hair away from my face gently.
The blue light keeps pulsing around us, casting strange shadows on his face.
He takes a deep breath, and I can feel his heart still beating fast against my cheek.
His fingers trail down to hold my hand tightly.
"Sophie," he says again, his voice cracking a little.
"I'm not just leaving the farm. I'm being sent away to learn magic control."
His thumb starts tracing circles on my palm while he talks.
The Grumpiest Alphas
The door bursts open, and everything changes.
