I am a governess to two lovely children of a Russian baron.
The day I arrived there, the head of the family was not at home; he was abroad and only returned after a week.
When I met him for the first time, he gave me a cold look and dismissed me abruptly.
He seemed to be a very handsome but cantankerous and cold person.
The children were lovely and charming.
They took my heart right away.
Soon, I won their hearts too.
After some days, the baron began to notice me also.
He started coming near me while I was playing with the children or having dinner with them.
I could see the emotionless mask on his handsome face cracking a little.
I came to know that his wife had died and he became distant from his children.
He was heartbroken and lonely but didn't show it.
I was happy that my coming there as a governess brought some joy to the children.
They also loved me a lot and would follow me everywhere.
The baron also started to show his love towards them though it was very slow.
One day, while we were having lunch, Alexei ran toward his father to hug him after finishing the meal.
The baron also opened his arms to hug him.
I could see some moisture in his eyes.

One afternoon, while the children were playing in the garden, I found myself seated across from Baron Mikhail in his study.
The room was dimly lit, with heavy drapes drawn against the chill outside.
I cleared my throat to begin.
"Baron Mikhail, I wanted to speak with you about the children's progress."
He nodded curtly, his eyes fixed on me.
I took a deep breath and began.
"Alexei has been doing well in arithmetic. He has been able to solve some of the problems on his own and seems to enjoy it."
The baron's stern features softened slightly at this news.
"That is good," he murmured.
"Natalia has also taken an interest in painting. She spends most of her free time drawing and coloring."
I pulled out a few of her sketches from my pocket and handed them to him.
He studied them intently for a moment before placing them back in my hand.

"They are very good," he said gruffly.
I smiled.
"Yes, she is very talented. I think she would like it if you could spend some time with her looking at her artwork. It would mean a lot to her."
The baron nodded again, his eyes flicking up to meet mine briefly.
"I will make sure to do so," he said.
I continued on, recounting some of the fun times we had as a family and the progress the children had made in their studies.
As I spoke, I noticed that the baron's mask was slipping further and further away, revealing a glimmer of pride and happiness beneath. When I finished speaking, he leaned back in his chair and regarded me for a moment.
"Thank you," he murmured almost inaudibly.

I rose from my seat and curtsied slightly.
"It is my pleasure to serve the children, baron."
I turned to leave, but as I reached the door, a loud crash echoed from outside.
I spun around, my heart racing, and rushed out into the garden.
The sound had come from near the fountain, where Alexei and Natalia were playing.
As I approached them, I saw that they were both standing frozen in place.
Alexei's arm was twisted at an odd angle and he was crying.
Natalia stood next to him, her eyes wide with fear.
I rushed over to them and knelt beside Alexei, gently grasping his injured arm.
"It's alright," I soothed, trying to keep my voice steady.
Baron Mikhail appeared behind me, his face pale and worried.
He knelt down beside us and lifted Alexei into his arms.
