Evelyn Harper
resilient, and determined. Raised by her parents without knowledge of her divine heritage, she faces unexpected challenges when a puppy version of Cerberus appears on her 18th birthday. As she navigates the world of Greek gods, she struggles to balance her mortal life with her new responsibilities as a demigod.
Cerberus
playful, and protective. In its puppy form, it brings joy and chaos into Evely's life while adapting to its new role outside the Underworld. Its presence serves as a tangible connection between Evely's mortal life and her divine heritage.
Hades
enigmatic, and protective. Despite his fearsome reputation, he shows affection towards Evely through gifts like Cerberus. His relationship with Persephone is loving and supportive. He plays a significant role in Evely's transition into the world of Greek gods, ensuring her safety and providing guidance through his loyal companion, Cerberus.
When I was little, my parents would joke that hades and persephone would be my godparents.
Little did they know what kind of chaos that would bring down upon them.
They had no idea what kind of hell they would put me through when they wrote those names down on that paper.
It wasn’t until I got to college, started living in a dorm room, and woke up to find a puppy version of cerberus waiting for me outside my door that I realized just how much hell it would truly be.
"Hades and persephone were jokingly put down as my godparents when I was christened," I said, turning to face him.
"My parents had no idea what they were doing when they wrote down their names."
Hades furrowed his brow, leaning forward in his seat.
"And what was that exactly?" he asked.
"They didn’t know who hades and persephone actually were. They thought it was just a funny story and chose them as godparents without realizing the actual implications."
A soft chuckle sounded from persephone.
"Oh, hades," she said, shaking her head with a smile.
"I think it’s kind of sweet."
Hades turned to face her, his eyes narrowing slightly.
"Sweet?"
he asked.
"I think it’s a little more than that," he said.
"It’s a damn mess."
I stood there frozen in the doorway, unsure of what to do next.
The god of the underworld and his wife were standing in front of me, staring at me as if I was some kind of puzzle they were trying to figure out.
I couldn’t help but notice how tall hades was, towering over me in his obsidian suit and black tie.
His hair was slicked back with a bit of oil and his eyes were dark as coal.
He looked every bit the part of the god of the underworld, and I couldn’t help but feel a little intimidated by him.
Persephone, on the other hand, looked like an angel.
She was dressed in a floral dress with a sweetheart neckline and her hair was tied up in a loose bun at the back of her head.
Her skin was pale and smooth, and her eyes were bright blue.
She looked like she belonged on a pedestal somewhere, not standing in my dorm room. The puppy version of cerberus squirmed in my arms, trying to get free.
His three heads yipped excitedly as he tried to get back to his master.
I awkwardly shifted him in my arms as I tried to bow my head to them.
"Please, come in," I said, stepping to the side so they could enter.
As they did, persephone’s flowery perfume wafted through the air, mixing with the musty smell of my dorm room.
I quickly kicked my dirty laundry under the bed and cleared textbooks off my only two chairs for them to sit down in.
I sank down into my desk chair, feeling exhausted from the whole ordeal.
The three heads of cerberus were fighting to keep their eyes open in my lap.
They were adorable, each one looking like a tiny version of a rottweiler with their black fur and scrunched up faces.
Hades paced back and forth between my bed and window, his suit and tie looking out of place among my college posters.
"Cerberus is just the first gift," he said, his deep voice rumbling through the room.
"As you enter the world of the divine, you will need him to protect you."
The three heads of cerberus slowly drooped as they fell asleep in my lap, their tiny snores coming in alternating rhythms.
Persephone placed a flower-ringed hand on hades’ arm, stopping him in his tracks.
"Zeus has already picked out your next gift," she said, her voice sounding less than enthused.
"It's a lightning bolt."
I fidgeted with cerberus’ collar, working up the courage to speak.
"Zeus wants me to have a lightning bolt?"
I asked, my voice trembling slightly.
"I don’t know if I’m comfortable wielding lightning."
Hades stopped pacing and leaned his hip against my desk, his suit creasing as he did so.
Persephone sat down on my bed, her flowery dress spreading out like petals around her.
Neither of them spoke for a moment, exchanging a look that I couldn’t quite decipher.
Suddenly, I felt a crackle of static in the air, like the kind you feel right before a storm hits.
My hair stood up on end, and the three heads of cerberus stirred in my lap.
All three of them began to whine, pawing at their ears with their front paws.
Before I could figure out what was happening, a blinding flash tore through my dorm room window, shattering glass and debris everywhere.
I covered my face with my arm as a crackling bolt of lightning embedded itself in the wall next to my taylor swift poster.
The force of the impact knocked over my desk lamp, scattering textbooks across the floor.
I looked up through the shattered remains of my window to see a man floating outside in a white suit.
His beard was still sparking from where he had been hit by lightning, and he doubled over laughing.
"Zeus, you really need to work on your entrances," Persephone sighed, brushing glass off her dress.
Hades shook his head, a smirk playing at the corners of his lips.
"Brother, if you're going to give gifts, at least try not to destroy the recipient's home in the process."
