David Morgan
loyal, and brave. Raised alongside Princess Amanda, he harbors deep feelings for her. His father, Paul, disappeared during a battle against goblins three years ago. David is tasked with investigating the goblin threat and hopes to prove himself worthy of Amanda's hand in marriage. He faces challenges from his rival, Thomas, and grapples with the complexities of his role in the kingdom.
Amanda Morgan
beautiful, and compassionate. Raised alongside David within the palace walls, she shares a deep bond with him. Her golden hair and gentle nature captivate David's heart. Though their relationship remains platonic for now, Amanda's presence motivates David to excel as a knight and protect her from harm. Her future marriage to David is hinted at but remains uncertain due to royal expectations.
Morgan the First
fairminded, and protective of his people. Morgan values bravery and skill in his knights as seen through his interactions with David and Thomas during their training sessions at the palace grounds. His leadership has maintained peace within Aledis despite external threats from goblins at their southern border.
My name is David, son of Paul and a knight in the great realm of Aledis, governed by the wise and powerful King Morgan the First.
Three years ago, when I was still a squire my father rode off to battle against the goblin hordes that had invaded our southern border.
He never returned.
Since then I have trained hard every day and last week I was made a full knight.
Perhaps my father's fate was to inspire me to be the best that I can be, for now I am given the task of investigating the goblin threat to our land.
If I succeed then who knows, maybe one day I will be granted the ultimate prize – the hand of Princess Amanda in marriage.
Amanda Morgan is the beautiful daughter of our king and queen.
She has been my friend since we were both toddlers playing on the palace grounds and my love for her has only grown stronger with each passing year.
Though we have not yet slept together, and nor would I want us to until we are married, she gives me kisses on my return from battle and tokens to take with me when I ride out.
Perhaps soon we may be together as man and wife.
I stand in the royal stables, checking my saddlebags one final time.
The leather straps are secure, holding provisions for a week's journey.
My sword hangs at my hip, freshly sharpened and ready for battle.
The morning sun streams through gaps in the wooden beams above, casting a warm glow over the bustling scene.
Stable boys hurry about their duties, saddling up horses and leading them out to the waiting knights.
My black stallion, Thunder, stamps impatiently in his stall.
He is a fine horse and has been with me since he was a colt.
Suddenly Amanda appears at the stable entrance, her golden hair catching the sunlight.
She walks towards me, a blue silk ribbon in her hands – her favor for my journey.
After she ties it to my arm I grasp the saddle horn and pull myself up onto Thunder's back.
"David," Amanda says softly, her eyes searching mine, "there's something I must tell you before you leave."
I lean down, concern furrowing my brow. "What is it, Amanda?"
She hesitates, glancing around to ensure no one else is listening, then whispers urgently, "My father has received word that the goblins are not acting alone; they have a new ally, someone from within our own court."
I nod, my grip on the saddle horn tightening.
"Tell me more."
Amanda's eyes dart about the stables, then she leans in closer.
"I know not who it is, but I overheard my father speaking with one of his advisors. The traitor is someone close to him, and they are feeding information to the goblins. You must be careful, David."
I nod solemnly, my heart pounding in my chest.
"I will, Amanda. I will not rest until I have found this traitor and brought them to justice."
She smiles up at me, her eyes shining with love and admiration.
"I knew I could count on you."
I smile back at her, feeling a warmth spread through my chest.
Then I turn Thunder about and lead him out of the stables into the palace courtyard.
The morning sun casts a golden glow over the cobblestones as I ride across the open space.
The ribbon tied to my sword hilt flutters in the gentle breeze.
As I approach the courtyard gates I hear footsteps behind me.
I turn to see Thomas Blackwood emerging from the shadows of the palace wall.
He is a tall man with dark hair and a cruel face.
His eyes narrow as he watches me ride towards him. When I reach the gate he steps forward, blocking my path.
"Where do you think you're going?" he sneers at me.
I frown at him, gripping Thunder's reins tightly in my hand.
"That's none of your business."
Thomas laughs mockingly, "Oh but it is. You see, I was watching you in the stables just now. You were having a private conversation with Princess Amanda. What were you talking about?"
I shake my head, "That's none of your concern."
Thomas steps closer to me, reaching out to grab Thunder's reins.
"You're a lowly knight," he snarls at me, "and you will address me as sir."
I grit my teeth in anger, gripping my sword hilt tightly beneath Amanda's favor ribbon.
"Let go of my reins," I growl at him.
Thomas laughs again, "Or what? You'll cut me down? You're nothing but a foolish boy playing at being a knight. You don't even have a family to back you up."
He spits at my feet then releases Thunder's reins and steps back into the shadows.
"If you want to leave then answer my question," he says from the darkness.
"What did you and Amanda do?"
I glare at the place where Thomas disappeared, my hand tightening on my sword hilt.
But I know that if I go in there to fight him then it will only cause trouble for Amanda.
So instead I turn Thunder about and lead him to the side gate of the palace grounds.
As we ride out into the street beyond, I hear the evening guard rotation begin within the palace walls.
I guide Thunder towards the western barracks where Captain Roland is reviewing patrol assignments for the night ahead.
He motions me inside his office, a small room filled with maps and duty rosters.
The captain's desk was piled high with scrolls and documents, his chair pushed back as he stood up to kick me with a force that sent me sprawling to the ground.
"David," he says, "I've been expecting you. I've received word from the king that you are to be given a special task. You are to investigate the goblin movements along our southern border."
I nod solemnly, "Yes sir, I am ready."
Captain Roland smiles at me, his eyes crinkling at the corners.
"I have no doubt of that. Your father was a fine knight and you have proven yourself to be just as capable. In fact, I have already recommended you for advancement. If you succeed in this task then it will be all but assured."
He moves over to a large map of our realm that covers one wall of his office.
"As you can see," he says, pointing to a section marked in red, "the goblins have been most active here. They have attacked several villages and patrols have reported large numbers of them moving through these woods." He turns back to me, his expression serious.
"I want you to ride out tomorrow morning and investigate these movements. Be careful though; we do not know what kind of danger lies within these woods."
I nod again, "Yes sir."
Captain Roland smiles once more, "I knew I could count on you. Now go and prepare yourself for tomorrow's journey."
I nod my head respectfully then turn and leave his office.
As I walk back through the barracks I feel a sense of pride and purpose.
Tomorrow I will ride out on an important mission for my king and perhaps when I return I will be granted a place among the higher ranks of our order.
And maybe even given permission to marry Amanda.
Suddenly a royal messenger bursts through the barracks door, clutching an official scroll in his hands.
He rushes over to Captain Roland's office, pushing past me in his haste.
I step aside, watching him disappear into the captain's office.
Moments later, Captain Roland emerges, his face grave.
"David," he calls out urgently, "there's been a change of plans. The king demands your immediate presence at the palace."
