Emily is a little girl who is five years old.
She has brown hair, green eyes, rosy cheeks, and a smile that can melt your heart.
She is a little girl who loves to color and play with playdough.
She loves listening to children’s music and singing along.
She loves watching cartoons and playing with her stuffed animals.
Emily is a little girl who is autistic.
Autistic means that sometimes she gets too much information from the world around her.
Sometimes the sounds are too loud and the lights are too bright.
Sometimes it is hard for her to understand what people are saying or to make herself understood.
But Emily is a smart little girl.
When she gets too much information, she puts her hands over her ears and takes a few deep breaths.
She closes her eyes and counts to ten.
When she feels calmer, she opens her eyes again and continues to play.
Emily is a little girl who lost her parents in a car accident when she was four years old.
After their death, she went to live with her two aunties, Sue Maria and Janet.
Auntie Sue has brown hair and blue eyes.
Auntie Maria has brown hair and green eyes.
Auntie Janet has brown hair and hazel eyes.
The Girls
She is a little bit taller than Auntie Janet.
She has a kind smile and a big heart.
She loves Emily very much.
Auntie Janet has blonde hair and green eyes.
The Girls
She is a little bit shorter than Auntie Sue.
She also has a kind smile and a big heart.
She loves Emily very much too.
I watch as Janet settles onto our worn leather couch, her arms open in invitation.

Emily stands nearby, rocking slightly, her fingers twisting the hem of her favorite purple shirt.
The Girls
The TV plays softly in the background - her usual afternoon cartoon.
The Girls
The Girls
Janet pats the space beside her, and Emily's eyes flicker toward the sound.
The Girls
Slowly, she edges closer, her movements careful and deliberate.
When she reaches the couch, Janet gently guides her to sit. Emily tenses for a moment, then gradually relaxes as Janet's arms encircle her.
The Girls
I lean against the doorframe, not wanting to interrupt this moment.
Emily's small fingers trace patterns on Janet's sleeve, and the cartoon characters dance across the screen.
The Girls
Janet keeps her movements slow and predictable, knowing that sudden shifts can startle Emily.
When the show's theme song begins playing, Emily's humming starts softly, almost imperceptibly at first.
Her body relaxes further into Janet's arms as the familiar melody continues.
The Girls
I notice her rocking has slowed to a gentle sway that matches the rhythm of her humming.
The Girls
Janet catches my eye and smiles, careful not to move her head too quickly.
"Emily," Janet whispers softly, "do you remember the song your mom used to sing to you?"
Emily's eyes widen slightly, and she nods, her voice barely above a whisper, "The one about the stars?"
"Yes, that's the one," Janet replies, her voice warm and comforting, "Would you like to sing it together?"
