I was sitting on my bed with my sister Tate as we were writing a new song for our upcoming show.
We were a trio girl group, and Nova, my exgirlfriend/ex, was the third girl in the group.
Me, her, and my baby sister made the group.
I was blowing smoke in her face, and she was fuming about it.
She knew damn well I didn’t want her ass in here.
Neither of us did.
We were at odds about something again, and I didn’t want to hear her mouth about it.
I was going to try my hardest to ignore her, even when I wanted to taste her on the tip of my tongue.
"Damnna, can I please talk to you?" she said, coming into our room.
She knew better than that.
I told her time and time again not to come over here without calling me first.
I wasn’t dressed, nor was I ready for her to see me like this.
I had on a two-piece with a thong underneath, and my hair was on my head.
I wanted to look cute for… for somebody.
Not her ass.
"Duh," I snorted, rolling my eyes.
"Are you fucking finished?" she asked, putting her hands on her hips.
I hated when she did that.
It pushed her breasts out even more, and I didn’t want to look at them.
The Girl Group
I stared hard at the notebook in my lap, pretending the scribbled words were the most interesting thing in the world.
Tate shifted beside me on the bed, her shoulder pressing against mine, offering silent support.
The mattress dipped as Nova came closer, her perfume hitting me like a punch to the gut.
I gripped my pen tighter, knuckles white, as she leaned over us to peek at the lyrics I had written.
Her hair brushed my bare shoulder, sending unwanted shivers down my spine.
When I finally glanced up, her face was inches from mine.
Those brown eyes that haunted my dreams and nightmares were staring back at me.
My breath caught as her fingers brushed against my thigh, supposedly reaching for the notebook.
"Nova," Tate said loudly, clearing her throat and making both of us jump.
Nova straightened up with a smirk on her face before turning and walking away.

I glared after her, but she just waved over her shoulder before slamming our door shut. "You okay?" asked Tate, nudging me gently with her elbow.
"Yeah," I said with a sigh, putting down my pen and notebook and snatching my blunt from the ashtray beside us.
I took another pull of it before blowing it out and leaning back against the headboard with my eyes closed.
"She still bothering you?"
Tate asked softly.
She was always looking out for me like that.
I didn’t know what I’d do without her if she ever left me for any reason.
"Yeah," I said quietly, watching through narrowed eyes as she shifted beside me to take another hit of the blunt too.
"I don’t know what to do."
She shrugged a little as she blew out smoke, leaning back against the headboard beside me once more.
"You could try talking to her."
I shook my head quickly at that notion.
"Nah."
"Why not? You two are good together. It’s been months since you all broke up. It’s time you both got over it."
"It’s not that easy."
I rolled my eyes at Tate before taking another hit of my blunt and passing it over to her again. She took it from me before taking another hit and then passing it back over to me once more.
She was always looking out for me like that too, making sure I was taken care of when Momma wasn’t around.
"She told me something last week," Tate said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"What did she say?" I asked, trying to sound indifferent but failing miserably.
"She said she still loves you, Damnna."
The Girl Group
Tate fell asleep soon after, and I was left staring at the notebook and lyrics we had been writing.
I grabbed my phone and scrolled through the old messages Nova and I shared before we broke up.
My thumb hovered over the last conversation we had before she left me for another girl.
It was from three months ago.
My eyes stung as I read through it again.
It was the same shit it always was between us - me telling her that she needed to choose, and her telling me she didn’t want to hurt anyone.
I told her I couldn’t keep going like this, and then she blocked me.
She blocked Tate too.
The next day, I saw her with another girl all over social media.
It felt like a knife in my chest every time I saw them together, and it took everything in me not to reach out to her. My phone vibrated in my hands, and I glanced down at it quickly.
The Girl Group
A message notification flashed across the screen from an unknown number.
I stared at it for a second before my heart began pounding in my chest.
Nova had found me again.
My fingers flew across the keyboard as I typed out a response, but then deleted it before sending it back.
I did that multiple times before finally sending a response back to her message asking if I was up.
Her response came quickly after mine, making my stomach flip with excitement and nervousness.
"Miss writing with you," she said with a heart emoji behind the words.
I clenched my jaw at that.
She knew damn well how much I loved writing lyrics with her late at night when Tate was asleep or gone out with her friends.
She’d come over here, and we’d sit on the edge of my bed together, writing songs until morning came. "Then why’d you leave?"
The Girl Group
"Come over. I got some stuff I want to work on."
I stared at her response for a second before reaching for my blunt and taking another hit.
I glanced over at Tate, who was still fast asleep.
I didn’t know if I should go or not.
I thought about how it used to be when we were writing together, and how she’d lay her head in my lap as we worked.
We’d share earbuds, listening to the music we were writing to as we scribbled lyrics in our notebooks.
I’d steal kisses from her every time she looked away, and she’d never say anything about it.
She’d just smile softly and kiss me back before going back to writing.
My fingers hovered over the keyboard as I typed out a response, but then deleted it before sending a simple "no" back to her.
"Damnna," she said in a voice note that came through seconds later.
The Girl Group
"I got something good. Please come."
I sighed, rubbing my forehead as I listened to the voice note again and again.
The melody was catchy, and the lyrics were good - really good.
It was exactly what we needed for our show coming up in two weeks. "Fine," I typed out, hitting send before I could change my mind.
"But tomorrow."
"Tomorrow’s fine," she said immediately after.
"I’ll text you when I’m on my way."
I rolled my eyes at that and deleted the conversation before tossing my phone aside and climbing under the covers beside Tate.
She stirred beside me, snuggling closer and throwing an arm over me before falling asleep once more.
The next morning, Tate was already up, sipping coffee at the kitchen table when I walked in.
The Girl Group
"Did you decide what you're gonna do about Nova?" she asked, looking at me over the rim of her mug.
I hesitated, running a hand through my hair. "I'm meeting her later," I admitted, watching for her reaction.
