Maya's POV
I was never one to believe in time travel.
I mean, it was impossible, right?
To just travel through time and end up in different eras?
Nope, not buying it.
But here I was, standing in the middle of a group of people I knew, yet had no idea how I got there.
I rubbed my eyes, hoping that when I opened them again, it would all be some sort of dream.
When I did, though, everything around me was still there.
The ten people with me were people I knew from school.
There was Noah, my crush for the past two years.
Toby and Emily, the star quarterback and cheerleader.
Jason and Lily, the bad boy and fallen girl.
Carter and Logan, best friends forever.
And Rachel and Austin, the couple who fought more than any other couple I knew.
Then there was me, Maya, a nobody in their eyes.
"Where are we?" Emily asked one of the men standing in front of us.
I had no idea who they were or how we had gotten here.
They were dressed in long black coats with hoods covering their faces.
I scanned the crumbling walls around us.
It was the Colosseum, but it looked nothing like it did now.
It was old and broken down, not the tourist attraction that it had become.
The men didn't answer Emily's question.
Instead, they continued talking as if we weren't even there.
"Welcome, Travelers," one of them said.
"You have been brought here from different eras to compete in a challenge. You will be competing against other groups of Travelers from different eras. You will be given three challenges to complete. If you complete all three challenges, you will be granted one wish each."
My heart raced as I listened to them explain what we would have to do.
I couldn't believe this was happening.
I glanced over at Noah, who was standing next to me.
His hand reached out and grabbed mine, intertwining our fingers together.
His palm was sweaty, but his grip was firm and reassuring. "What are we supposed to do?" he asked me quietly.
I shook my head, not knowing what to say.
The hooded men continued talking, explaining the rules of the challenge.
I tried to focus on what they were saying, but I couldn't stop thinking about how close Noah was standing to me.
I could feel his warm breath on my neck as he leaned in closer to hear what I had to say.
My heart raced as I realized that he was holding my hand.
I tried to pull away, but he held tight, keeping me close to him. "Don't trust anyone else," he whispered in my ear.
"They're probably trying to trick us."
I nodded, trying to keep my focus on the task at hand.
But it was hard when all I could think about was how good it felt to have Noah's hand wrapped around mine.
As the hooded men finished their explanation, I noticed a girl standing across from us with a scar running down her cheek and a look of determination in her eyes.
She seemed familiar somehow, but I couldn't quite place where I had seen her before. She caught my eye and gave me a small smile before turning back to face the hooded men.
I frowned, wondering who she was and why she seemed so familiar.
Noah squeezed my hand gently and pulled me back towards him.
"Don't worry about her," he said softly in my ear.
"She's just trying to distract us."
I nodded, trying to keep my focus on the task at hand.
I scanned the faces of the people around me, all of whom looked just as scared and confused as I did.
I took a deep breath and stepped forward, my heart pounding in my chest.
The cold stone beneath my feet sent shivers through my body.
I took three steps towards the nearest hooded figure, my hand still clasped tightly in Noah's.
He let go of my hand but stayed close behind me.
"What exactly is the first challenge?"
I asked, my voice echoing off the walls of the Colosseum.
The hooded figure slowly turned to face me, revealing a metallic mask underneath its hood.
Other groups that had been talking amongst themselves fell silent, their attention now focused on me.
The figure raised a gloved hand and pointed to a rusty metal door at the far end of the arena that creaked open.
"Through there," it said in a mechanical voice.
"Inside, you'll find the first clue," the figure continued, its voice resonating with an eerie calm.
"Remember, only those who truly understand the past can hope to shape the future," it added cryptically.
Noah leaned closer, his voice barely above a whisper, "Maya, do you think this is why we were all brought together?"
