I felt the impact of my right side and the weight of my body slamming into the grass.
The ball had gotten away from me and all I could think was get it back, get it back and defend.
That was all I could think about.
Defend our goal.
Defend.
Defend.
Defend.
A second later, someone was pushing on my right shoulder, which had taken most of the impact when I went down.
"Hey man, are you okay?"
It was Marcus Thompson, our right defender and my best friend on the team.
I nodded and tried to sit up.
"Hold up," he said as he pushed me back down.
"I don’t know what the fuck happened. What happened?"
The Game Changer
I pushed against his hand, my shoulder screaming in protest.
The lights of the stadium seemed to blur together and I felt a little dizzy.
I blinked a few times, trying to clear my head.
I looked up and saw Landon Bennett already taking my position on the field.
He gave me a quick smirk before jogging off.
Coach Martinez appeared in my line of vision.
"Jason, are you okay?"
He was looking at me with concern on his face.
I nodded and tried to sit up again.
The medical team came running over with all their equipment.
The Game Changer
"Get back," one of the medics said to Marcus, who still had his hand on my shoulder.
I felt him let go but he didn’t move from my side.
"Lie still," the medic said as he started to prod at my shoulder. "What happened?" I asked again.
"You got tackled," Marcus answered, his voice tight with anger.
I tried to sit up again and a sharp pain shot through my shoulder, making me gasp and fall back down.
The Game Changer
The medic’s fingers probed my shoulder joint and I winced.
I looked up at the field and saw Landon jump up and intercept a pass that was headed to where I should have been standing.
The crowd roared and the ball rolled toward our defensive line.
My muscles tensed, ready to get up and defend, but the medic’s hands on my shoulder kept me still.
"Stay down," Marcus said in my ear.
The Game Changer
"I’m fine," I gritted out between my teeth.
The medic stood up and started to walk over to his kit to grab something else.
That was my chance.
I pushed myself to my feet, ignoring the pain in my shoulder and the dizziness in my head.
"Jason, get back here," Marcus yelled.
I ignored him and started to walk toward the sideline.
The field swayed under my feet but I kept moving.
I saw Coach Martinez looking at me from the sideline and he started yelling something but I couldn’t hear him over the roar of the crowd.
The medical team came running back over, trying to get me to sit on the bench but I shrugged them off.
The Game Changer
I was going back in.
I had to get back in formation.
That’s when a deafening boom shook the stadium.
I was knocked off balance and I fell to my knees.
The crowd gasped in shock and the stadium lights flickered.
I pushed myself up again and looked out at the field.
The players were all staring at each other in confusion.
I saw Landon start to walk off the field, heading for the exit.
The opposing team’s players were running for their locker room too.
Then I saw it.
The ball was lying abandoned at midfield.
I took off in a sprint, my injured shoulder forgotten in my adrenaline haze.
I ran straight for the ball and the opposing team’s two defenders who hadn’t run for the exit yet.
The Game Changer
They were both bigger than me but I didn’t let that stop me.
I weaved around them and then I was clear.
I had about twenty-five yards to go before I reached the goal box.
I could hear the opposing team’s goalkeeper yelling behind me but I didn’t look back. I kicked the ball with all my might and it sailed through the air, curving over the goalkeeper’s outstretched hands and into the top corner of the net.
The stadium erupted into chaos around me as I stood there, panting with my hands on my hips.
The Game Changer
Coach Martinez was standing at the sideline, his mouth hanging open in shock as he stared at me.
Sirens started wailing in the distance outside of the stadium and then a voice came over the loudspeaker, telling everyone to evacuate immediately.
The stadium fell silent as I turned to face the chaos, realizing this was only the beginning.
The stadium lights flickered and then went out, plunging us into darkness.
The only light came from the emergency exit signs and the flashlights that some of the players and staff had on their phones.
I started to limp toward the exit to the locker room, my shoulder throbbing with every step.
Security guards in neon vests ran past me, directing people to the parking lot.
I stopped for a moment in front of Coach Martinez’s office and saw him inside gathering up papers from his desk.
He looked up and saw me standing in the doorway.
His face tightened.
"Hart, what were you thinking? That stunt could’ve ended your career."
I opened my mouth to tell him that I had to score that goal but sirens drowned out my words.
Coach Martinez shook his head, his expression softening as he gestured for me to follow him out.
