I was going to be a star!
Okay, maybe not a star, but at least I wouldn’t completely suck.
I had this.
I didn’t know what I had, exactly, but I had something, and that something was going to get me through this next hour and a half.
The way the girl with the dark hair and even darker eyes looked at me, like I was a douche, or maybe a hybrid of a hobbit and a leprechaun—small and kind of repulsive—I was pretty sure that meant I had her right where I wanted her.
She was clearly intimidated.
That was probably all going to go downhill once she realized I wasn’t as big of a douche as she thought I was.
I smiled, and she ducked her head down into her book.
Another point for me.
She was shy, which made her repulsive-ness go up a couple of points.
Shy girls were usually harder to get into bed, but they were also more rewarding once you got there.
They were like virgin martinis—once you had one, you never went back to the nasty old vodkas.
"Okay," I said, leaning forward so I could see her better.
She still didn’t look up.
"I’m going to go out on a limb here and say you’re not from around here."
Her eyebrows twitched.
"No."
She still didn’t look up.
"Okay . . . well . . ."

I tap my pen against the notebook, making just enough noise to be noticeable without being obnoxious.
The blank page stares back at me while I sneak glances at her from the corner of my eye.
She shifts in her seat, her dark hair falling forward to shield her face.
I catch her peeking over at my empty notebook.
When she notices me noticing, she quickly returns to her book, but her eyes aren’t moving across the page anymore.

The silence stretches between us for a few minutes before I start humming quietly.
It’s an annoying pop song that’s been stuck in my head for days.
She bites her lip, clearly fighting the urge to look my way again.
I notice her glancing at my empty notebook again, and an idea strikes me.
While pretending to take notes, I start sketching her profile with quick, light strokes.
Her nose is small and slightly upturned, her eyes are dark and expressive, and her hair falls across her face in loose waves.
My artistic skills aren’t great, but I manage to capture the basics in a few rough lines.
She shifts in her seat again, probably wondering why I’ve suddenly become so interested in note-taking.
I deliberately tilt the notebook slightly in her direction, making sure she can see it from the corner of her eye.
Her cheeks flush when she realizes what I’m drawing, and she quickly looks away.
"Why are you drawing me?" she asks softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Because I wanted to capture the moment before you tell me your secret," I reply with a teasing grin.
She hesitates, then murmurs, "What if I told you I’m not who you think I am?"
