The boys in our scout troop sat in the first few pews.
They were there to be awarded their fourlegged merit badge.
This was the first time any of them had achieved this particular badge, and they were all excited.
The new legs were identical to their original legs and attached right behind the originals.
The boys averaged about seven feet tall before they got their fourlegged merit badge, so when they added the second set of legs, it made them almost impossible to fit into a pew.
The church service was a special one for our troop.
We had reserved the first few pews for the boys who would be awarded their merit badges, as well as their families.
The rest of the troop sat behind them.
I was happy to see so many families there to support the boys.
As leader of the troop, I had been given the honor of awarding the merit badges.
This was my fifth year leading the troop, and I had seen many of the boys grow up and achieve their four legged status.
The FourLegged Merit Badge
I watched as Henry, who was in the front pew, tried to coordinate his four legs in the cramped space.
His back legs kept bumping against the wooden bench, making a hollow thud.
The other scouts were having similar problems.
Their new limbs were still getting used to each other, and they kept tangling together.
The pew creaked under their combined weight.
I stepped forward to help steady Marcus when his front right leg slipped off the kneeler.
He almost toppled sideways into his mother, but I managed to catch him in time.
The other scouts snickered at his misfortune, but quickly composed themselves when Father Matthews approached the altar.
"Thanks, Mr. Thompson," Marcus said, his voice a mix of embarrassment and gratitude.
"No problem, Marcus," I replied, smiling reassuringly. "Just remember, these new legs will take some getting used to, but soon enough, you'll be running faster than ever."
The FourLegged Merit Badge
Father Matthews approached our pew, a copper basin in his hands and a white towel draped over his arm.
He smiled warmly at the boys.
"Good morning, scouts," he said.
"Today is a special day for all of you. Are you ready to receive your four legged merit badges?"
The boys nodded eagerly, their faces filled with anticipation.
I guided them to extend their four feet into the aisle, creating a row of sixteen shoes that needed removing.
Henry fumbled with the back pair of shoelaces, trying to untie them without bending down.
Marcus, still a bit embarrassed from his near-fall, carefully slid his feet forward, making sure not to bump into anyone else.
The other boys whispered and nudged each other as they untied their shoes, revealing mismatched socks underneath.
I helped steady Marcus as he wobbled, his back legs crossing awkwardly over each other.
The FourLegged Merit Badge
Father Matthews knelt before the first set of feet, dipping his hand into the basin and lifting out a small amount of water.
The water glistened as it touched each foot, marking the beginning of their new journey.
