Most girls my age avoid dirt like it’s a plague.
They spend their free time shopping, or talking on the phone, or watching stupid romantic comedies.
Or, you know, putting on makeup and practicing their ‘hot’ looks in the mirror.
And don’t even get me started on purses, shoes, and fashion in general.
I mean, seriously, who the hell came up with the idea that women have to be fashionable?
Not to mention all the damn dating and hooking-up.
Ugh.
I’m very, very different from most girls my age, and I’m proud of that.
I have no interest in spending my free time getting all dolled up or trying to score a date.
And I definitely don’t give a flying heck about all the drama and shit that goes on in high school.
My idea of a good time is playing sports, watching animals documentaries, reading books about science and history, or watching action movies where shit blows up and bad guys get their asses kicked.
Or hanging out with my best friend and all-around awesome guy Chas, playing video games or talking about cool stuff like outer space and conspiracy theories.
But most of all?
I love dinosaurs.
Like…LOVE them.
Dinosaurs are EPIC.
The coolest thing ever.
And I’m not just talking about the T-Rex or the Triceratops.
All dinosaurs are awesome in their own way.
The Fossil Hunter's Daughter
I’m sprawled on my bed, flipping through my favorite book, The Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs, when I hear Mom’s voice calling up the stairs.
"Hannah! Come downstairs for a minute!"
I roll my eyes.
Can’t she see I’m busy?
I dog-ear the page I’m on - the one about the Therizinosaurus, with its crazy-long arms and massive claws - and toss the book onto my nightstand.
I pad across the floor in my bare feet and make my way downstairs.
Dad is standing in the living room with his hands behind his back, and Mom is sitting on the couch with that weird smile on her face that she gets when she’s trying to hide something.
It’s a look I know all too well.
I pause on the bottom step, suddenly alert.
The last time they looked this giddy was when Dad brought home that piece of fossilized dinosaur egg from his dig in Argentina.

"Uh…what’s going on?"
I ask warily.
Mom’s smile widens.
"Come here, honey. We want to talk to you about something."
I trudge into the living room and stop in front of them.

Dad clears his throat, glancing at Mom before speaking.
"Hannah, how would you feel about spending the summer on a real dinosaur dig site?"
My heart skips a beat as I stare at them, wide-eyed.
My legs feel weak.
A real dinosaur dig site?
I stumble forward, my dinosaur book sliding off the nightstand upstairs and falling to the floor with a dull thud.
Dad’s arms open wide, and I crash into him, wrapping my arms around his waist.
He smells like his usual aftershave mixed with the faint scent of desert dust from his recent fieldwork in Arizona.
The Fossil Hunter's Daughter
Mom joins our hug from behind me, her warm hands on my shoulders.
I’m bouncing on my toes, unable to contain my excitement.
"When do we leave? Where exactly are we going? Will I get my own tools?"
