My name is Addison or Addy for short.
I am 21 years old.
I am smart, beautiful, creative, and loving.
I like art, photography, music, and poetry.
I am a very talented person.
I like singing and playing instruments.
I am married to a guy named Michael Gray.
He is the love of my life, or so I thought.
He turned out to be the complete opposite.
He is controlling, manipulative, kind of flirty, mean, harsh, and very loving at times.
But now he is just controlling and manipulative.
He doesn’t allow me to do anything or go anywhere without him.
He doesn’t even trust me with his friends or family.
He treats me like I am nothing but dirt on his shoes.
He doesn’t even trust me with our baby.
He suffocates me so much that I can’t breathe anymore.
I feel trapped and stuck in this unhappy marriage.
Sometimes I feel like I am going crazy or losing my mind.
Now he is obsessed with my weight.
He wants me to lose it even though I am skinny.
He says I need to because he wants a wife who can keep up with him and give him sexy workouts in their workouts.
So he hired a trainer for me.
The best one the gym had to offer.
I was so shocked when I found out that it was a guy my age.
His name is Josh Thompson.
I was nervous, but I was also excited.
I had never worked out before.
I mean, I had done a few yoga poses and stretched here and there, but that was it.
So when I got to the gym, my heart was pounding in my chest.
I was so nervous and scared.
I didn’t know what to expect or what he would be like.
But when I got to the room where he said he would meet me, he was already there.
He was stretching and doing some yoga poses on his mat.
He looked up at me with a warm smile on his face.
He had a very kind and understanding look in his eyes.
"Hi Addison. I am Josh. It’s nice to meet you."
He said as he stood up and walked over to me with his hand outstretched for me to shake it.
"Nice to meet you too."
I replied as I shook his hand.
He had a very firm handshake, but he wasn’t crushing my hand like Michael did sometimes when we were in public and he wanted to show off how strong he was. "So let’s get started. We will start with some simple stretches."
He said as he led me over to the mat that was next to his.
We started with some simple stretches, like touching our toes and stretching our arms over our heads.
Then we moved on to some yoga poses.
I could feel Josh watching me as I did the poses, but not in a creepy way.
It was more like he was checking my form and making sure that I was doing them correctly.
When we got to the downward-facing dog pose, Josh came over and adjusted my hips so they were in line with my shoulders.
His hands were gentle on my skin, but firm enough so that I knew what he wanted me to do with my hips.
He told me that it would help prevent injury if I did it correctly.
Then we moved on to some leg lifts and arm raises with weights.
Josh showed me how to do them correctly and then watched me do them while he did the same thing next to me. After we finished with the weights, Josh said that we should cool down by walking around the gym for a few minutes before we left for the day.
So we walked around the gym together while we talked about our workout routines and what we liked about working out.
Josh told me that he loved working out because it helped him relieve stress from school and work.
I told him that I had never worked out before and that Michael wanted me to lose a few pounds, so he hired Josh to help me.
Josh didn’t say anything about it, but I could tell that he was thinking about it.
We walked over to the bench outside the gym and sat down.
The evening air was cool against my skin.
It felt nice after working out in the hot gym.
"Addison, can I ask you something?" he said as we sat there.
"Of course. What do you want to know?"
I replied.
"I was just wondering if Michael is always this controlling and critical of you. Or is it something new?"
He asked with a concerned look on his face.
I sighed as I thought about how to answer his question.
"He has always been controlling, but it has gotten worse over the last year or so. He used to be more loving and sweet, but now he is just mean and harsh."
I said in a low voice.
I wasn’t sure why I was telling Josh all of this, but something about him made me feel like I could trust him. "Do you think that maybe you should start setting some boundaries with him? You deserve to be treated better than how he treats you," Josh said as he looked at me with kind eyes.
"I don’t know. I have tried talking to him about it, but he just gets angry and yells at me."
I said as I looked down at my hands in my lap.
"Maybe we can practice some assertive responses for when he tries to control you. That way you can stand up for yourself and tell him how you feel," Josh suggested with a smile on his face.
"That sounds like a great idea," I said with a smile back at him.
So we spent the next hour practicing assertive responses for different scenarios.
Josh would play the part of Michael and try to control me, while I practiced saying no and telling him how I felt.
It was helpful having Josh there to help me practice because he was calm and didn’t get angry with me when I didn’t say what he thought was the right thing. "Okay, let’s do one more scenario. Then we can head home," Josh said as we stood up from the bench.
"Sounds good," I replied as we walked back into the gym together.
We did one more scenario where Michael wanted me to go shopping with him instead of going to work out with Josh.
Then we headed home.
After we finished, the sun was setting below the horizon.
The parking lot was empty except for Josh’s car and mine.
The long shadows of the gym stretched across the parking lot.
Josh leaned against his car as he watched me.
I stood there for a minute, rehearsing what I would say to Michael when I got home.
I could hear Josh’s words echoing in my head.
"You can do this."
He finally said as he pushed off of his car and walked over to me.
I nodded my head as I looked up at him.
We stood there for a minute, looking at each other, before Josh turned and got in his car.
I watched him drive away before I got in my car and drove home.
My heart was pounding in my chest as I pulled into the driveway.
I sat there for a few minutes, trying to calm my nerves before I got out and went inside.
Michael was sitting on the couch in the living room when I walked in.
I walked into the living room, my hands trembling slightly as I set down my gym bag.
Michael was sitting on the couch, scrolling through his phone with that familiar scowl on his face.
He looked up when he heard me come in.
His eyes narrowed as he took in my workout clothes and the sweat that was still glistening on my skin.
"What did you do?" he asked as he put his phone down and stood up.
Before he could start his usual rant about how I needed to lose weight, I straightened my back and looked him in the eye.
"We need to talk," I said, my voice coming out steadier than I thought it would.
Michael’s face darkened as he looked at me.
"Excuse me?" he said, his voice dangerous.
I clenched my fists as I remembered what Josh had said to me earlier.
"We need to talk about how you’ve been treating me," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
Michael crossed his arms, a mocking smile playing on his lips.
"And what exactly do you think I've done wrong?" he challenged, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of Josh's encouragement behind me. "You've been controlling and critical, and it needs to stop."
Michael's mocking laughter cut through the tension, and I felt my resolve wavering.
But before he could respond, another knock echoed from the front door.
I froze, my heart pounding in my chest as I realized who it was.
Michael’s eyes narrowed as he turned to look at me.
"Who is that?" he demanded.
I didn’t have time to answer before he stormed over to the door and yanked it open.
There, standing on our front porch in his gym clothes, was Josh.
He was holding my water bottle in his hand, and his eyes met mine over Michael’s shoulder.
The familiar warmth in his gaze gave me a surge of confidence, but I knew that this was not how I wanted him to meet Michael.
"What are you doing here?" Michael demanded, his voice cold and menacing.
Josh looked at him calmly, his expression unreadable.
"I brought Addison her water bottle," he said simply.
Michael’s eyes narrowed as he looked between us.
"And who exactly are you?"
Josh straightened his back slightly as he looked at Michael.
"I’m Addison’s trainer," he said, his voice steady. Michael’s face darkened as he looked at me, then back at Josh.
"Why is your trainer at our house?" he demanded.
I stepped forward, reaching for the water bottle in Josh’s hand.
But before I could take it, Michael snatched it from him and turned to glare at me.
The plastic crinkled in his grip as he held it up between us.
"What is going on here?" he demanded, his voice rising with anger.
Michael’s face contorted with rage as he hurled the water bottle against the wall.
I flinched as it hit with a loud crack, the plastic splintering apart as water splashed across our hardwood floor.
Michael turned to glare at Josh, advancing on him with his fists clenched.
"Who are you to show up here?" he growled, jabbing a finger into Josh’s chest.
Josh stood his ground, his hands raised non-threateningly as he met Michael’s glare.
"I’m just a friend," he said calmly.
But Michael wasn’t having it.
"You don’t tell me how to treat my wife," he snarled, his voice rising in anger.
I stepped between them, pushing against Michael’s chest to stop him from advancing any further on Josh.
"Stop it!" I shouted, my voice ringing out in the sudden silence.
Michael’s eyes widened in surprise as he turned to look at me.
I could see the shock written all over his face, and for a moment, I thought I saw something else there too - fear. But then his expression hardened again, and he grabbed my wrist, yanking me aside so that he could continue glaring at Josh.
The sharp pain of his grip made me gasp, and I felt myself being pulled off balance as he dragged me away from Josh.
But before I could fall, Josh stepped forward and grabbed Michael’s arm, pulling him off of me.
"Don’t touch her like that," Josh warned, his voice steady but dangerous.
Michael hesitated, his grip loosening as he realized he was no longer in control.
