I was back in town for a week already.
I'd made the decision to leave everything behind — college, friends, the whole new life I'd built for myself — and start fresh in my hometown.
I knew it all sounded crazy, but I could not explain why I felt like I had to do this.
Someday I would have a better answer for myself and others, but until then I would just shrug and smile, feeling like a moron for doing this in the first place.
The only good thing was that I had Sam, my best friend since childhood, and Jules, his partner, a nurse whom I'd known since high school.
They were my rock in this new town, even though they still couldn't understand why I'd left everything behind.
"Sam, what are you doing? Are you coming over for dinner or not?"
Jules asked over the phone.
"I don't know yet," I heard Sam say from the background.
"I still have work to do."
"You said that two hours ago. Come on; it's getting late."
"I'm sorry, babe. I just need a little more time."
"Okay… but don't think about going to that bar after you finish. You've been there every night this week. It's not good for you."
"I know, I know. I'll see you later."
I grabbed my keys and wallet and went to the local Chinese place that Jules loved so much.
I placed my order and waited for them to prepare it.
While I was waiting, I scrolled through my phone and found some old pictures from college.
There were photos of me and my friends at parties, at the beach, and at school events.
I couldn't help but smile as I looked at them.
I missed those days, but I knew that I'd made the right decision in coming back home.
The smell of garlic and ginger filled the air as they handed me three bags of food.
I paid and left the restaurant, heading back to Sam's house.
As I drove through the streets, I noticed how different everything looked in the evening light.
The houses seemed smaller, the trees taller, and the sky a deeper shade of blue. I parked my car outside Sam's house, a small ranch-style home with a white picket fence.
Sam's truck was still not in the driveway, so he must have been running late again.
I grabbed the bags of food and walked up to the front door.
Through the kitchen window, I could see Jules moving around, probably setting the table.
She was wearing a yellow sundress with white flowers on it, her hair tied up in a ponytail.
I took a deep breath, knocked on the door, and prepared to face the unknown.
I help Jules set the table while we wait for Sam.
We arrange the takeout containers in the middle of the table, along with some plates and utensils.
The kitchen is warm, and the smell of food wafts through the air, making my stomach growl with hunger.
Jules and I chat about our day, discussing her shift at the hospital and my job search.
She tells me about a patient she had who was recovering from surgery, and I share a story about a potential employer who seemed interested in hiring me.
As we talk, I notice that the windows are open, letting in a gentle breeze that rustles the curtains.
The sun is starting to set outside, casting a warm orange glow over the room.
Jules wipes her forehead with the back of her hand, looking a bit flushed from the heat.
"I think I'm going to open the window above the sink," she says, walking over to it.
"It's getting a bit stuffy in here."
She struggles with the window for a moment before finally managing to push it open.
A cool breeze blows into the room, carrying with it the scent of fresh cut grass and blooming flowers. "Ah, that feels better," Jules says, taking a deep breath.
I nod in agreement, feeling grateful for the fresh air.
As we continue to set the table, I hear a distant rumble of thunder outside.
I glance out the window and see dark clouds gathering on the horizon.
"Looks like there's a storm coming," I say to Jules.
She follows my gaze and frowns slightly.
"That's strange," she says.
"It's not supposed to rain this time of year."
I shrug, not really knowing what to say.
The weather can be unpredictable sometimes.
As we finish setting the table, I hear another rumble of thunder outside.
This time it's louder and closer than before.
Jules looks up at me with concern in her eyes. "I hope Sam gets here soon," she says.
"He's been acting strange lately."
I'm about to ask her what she means when suddenly there's a loud crash outside.
We both turn to look out the window and see that Sam's metal tool rack has fallen over in the backyard.
Jules and I exchange a worried glance, knowing this storm might bring more than just rain.
