Jason & Jake
The boy next door—it’s a trope as old as time. Except this boy next door are my best friends since childhood, and one day I realized my feelings for him went way beyond friendship.
And then he fell for another guy, the new hot student who had moved into town and moved in next door.
I wasn’t jealous.
Much.
Okay, fine.
I was burning with a fire of pure lust for the one and white hot jealousy of the other.
But I wasn’t about to risk our friendship by telling him how I felt.
Not when we lived in a small town where everyone knew each other’s business in a matter of hours, and being gay wasn’t so much accepted as it was tolerated in strict, quiet doses.
And then things got complicated.
Very complicated.
Jake learned how I felt about him—and he felt it too.
Things were about to get very hot and very complicated in this small town, and in a big way.
The Forbidden Love
I followed Jake to our favorite spot by Miller’s Creek, where we used to catch frogs and crayfish when we were kids.
The night air was cool, the water rushing over the rocks a soothing sound.
We sat on the weathered wooden dock, our feet dangling in the water.
Jake sighed, his shoulders sagging.
"I don’t know what’s going on with me."
He turned his head to look at me, his eyes dark in the moonlight.
"I feel like I’m losing my mind."
I reached out and touched his hand, my fingers brushing against his warm skin.
A jolt of electricity went through me at the contact, but I didn’t pull away.
I couldn’t.
The Forbidden Love
"I don’t know what you mean."
Jake shook his head.
"Mason. He’s…he’s not who I thought he was."
I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Jake shrugged, his hand still under mine.
"He’s just…different. Not like you."
My heart thudded in my chest as I tried to process what he was saying.
"Different from me?"
Jake nodded, his eyes locked on mine.
"Yeah. You’re so easygoing, so laid back. Mason is more…intense. More serious. More everything."
I swallowed hard, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Maybe that’s what you need."
Jake snorted.
"Maybe. But it feels like he’s pulling me in two different directions at once. Like he wants me to be something I’m not."
My heart ached for him, and I squeezed his hand gently.
"Maybe you should talk to him about it." Jake sighed again, his shoulders slumping even further.
"I don’t know if that would help. I don’t even know what I want anymore."
I turned to look at him, my eyes meeting his in the moonlight.
"What do you mean?"
Jake’s gaze dropped to my mouth, then back up to my eyes.
"I don’t know if I can do this anymore."
"Do what?"
He leaned in closer, his lips inches from mine.
"This. Us. You and me."
My breath caught in my throat as I realized what he was saying.
"You and Mason?"
Jake nodded, his eyes burning with intensity.
"Yes. Me and Mason. And maybe…maybe something else."
My heart raced as I stared at him, unsure of what to say or do next.
The Forbidden Love
"Jake, are you saying you want to be with both of us?"
His eyes flickered with uncertainty, but there was a glimmer of hope.
"I don't know if it's possible, but I can't shake the feeling that it might be right."
His words hung in the air between us, heavy with unspoken meaning.
The creek rushed on, its gentle voice filling the silence.
I shifted closer to him on the wooden dock, our thighs touching.
Jake’s breathing quickened as I turned to face him, my hand still covering his.
The moonlight caught the nervous swallow in his throat.
The Forbidden Love
His eyes darted to my lips, then back up to my eyes.
My free hand trembled as I reached up to touch his jaw.
He leaned into my palm, tilting his head slightly.
The space between us grew smaller, our breaths mingling in the cool night air.
