Zhang San here.
I work in a factory, tightening screws.
My monthly salary is 6,500 yuan, and I get one day off a week.
I'm not saying it's hard to survive on that, but… well, you'll see.
If you had asked me what happiness is back then, I would have said it's when you watch Japanese adult films and eat instant noodles every day, and after a few drinks you're like a king.
Of course, that's just a joke.
But if I really had to choose… well, maybe it's not so bad.
At least I have something to look forward to every day.
Not much, but something.
I don't know how many people are like me out there.
Maybe there are a lot.
Maybe we're all just losers in our own ways.
I'm not saying that's bad.
Because if we're not losers, then what are we?
We can't all be winners, right?

The factory floor hums with machinery.
My fingers move automatically, twisting the screws into the metal plates.
My mind is somewhere else, already looking forward to tomorrow, my day off.
Luo Shi works beside me, humming a tune.
He always hums when he works.
I glance at the clock on the wall - still two hours until our shift ends.
The supervisor walks past us, and I quicken my pace slightly.
He doesn't say anything, but I know he's watching.
My back aches from hunching over the workstation all day.
A drop of sweat rolls down my temple as I reach for another screw.

The metal feels cold between my fingers as I position it carefully.
I notice movement at the far end of the production line.
A new face catches my eye.
A young woman in a blue factory uniform is being shown around by the floor supervisor.
Her name tag reads "Mei Ling."
She's introduced to various stations, and as she passes, she glances in my direction.
Our eyes meet briefly, and she offers a small smile that lasts longer than a casual greeting should.
I fumble with the screwdriver, dropping it onto the metal workbench with a clang.
Luo Shi leans over, a teasing grin on his face.
"Looks like someone's got your attention, Zhang San."
I shake my head, trying to play it cool. "It's not like that, Luo Shi. But... did you see the way she smiled?"
