I was twenty-four years old and in my second season.
I should have been married by now, or at the very least have a suitor or two courting me.
Instead, I had nothing.
Not a single gentleman had shown interest in me since the start of my first season last year.
My parents were beginning to worry, and so was I.
What was wrong with me?
I was the perfect girl: I never spoke out of turn, never curled a single toe in my stockings, and never got a hair out of place.
Yet I had no suitor.
My best friend, Josephine Lockhart, seemed to have the opposite problem.
She was effortlessly beautiful and charming, yet she had no interest in finding a husband.
Despite having more than one gentleman call on her every day, she rejected them all.
Her parents were beginning to worry about that as well.
Josephine was also twenty-four years old and in her second season.
The Forbidden Lady
After another night of a social gathering where no gentleman approached me, I excused myself and went out to the garden with Josephine.
We sat on a stone bench beneath the wilting roses.
I finally broke down and told her my fears.
"I'm going to be a spinster," I said, my voice trembling.
My hands shook as I smoothed my perfect dress.
"It's exhausting being this perfect all the time."
Josephine looked at me with surprise, then nodded.
"I know what you mean," she said softly.
"I'm sorry, Aurelia. I didn't realize how hard it was for you."
I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself.
The Forbidden Lady
"It's not your fault," I said.
"It's just...I feel like I'm failing somehow. Like there's something wrong with me."
Josephine reached out and took my hand in hers.
Her touch was warm and comforting against my cold fingers.
"You're not failing," she said gently.
"There's nothing wrong with you. You're beautiful and kind and smart. Any man would be lucky to have you as his wife."
I smiled weakly at her words, feeling a lump form in my throat.
"Thank you, Josephine," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
"You're a true friend."
We sat there in silence for a moment, enjoying the peacefulness of the garden.
The sound of crickets chirping and the soft breeze rustling through the trees created a soothing melody that calmed my nerves. As we sat there, I couldn't help but notice how close Josephine was to me.
Our legs were almost touching, and her hand was still holding mine tightly.
It felt strange yet comforting at the same time.
I looked up at her and saw that she was staring at me intently, her eyes filled with concern and compassion.
For a moment, I thought I saw something else in her gaze, something that looked almost like desire.
But then she blinked and looked away, breaking the spell that had fallen over us both.
I quickly pulled my hand away from hers and stood up from the bench, smoothing out my dress once again.
"I should probably get back inside," I said nervously, trying to hide the emotions that were swirling inside of me.
"Yes, of course," Josephine replied, standing up as well.
"I'll walk you back."
The Forbidden Lady
As we made our way towards the house, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something had changed between us in that moment in the garden.
Back in the ballroom, I hovered near the refreshment table, still trying to shake off the strange feeling that lingered within me from our moment in the garden.
My hands trembled slightly as I adjusted my gloves, my mind wandering back to Josephine's touch.
I could still feel the warmth of her fingers where she had held mine.
I tried to focus on proper etiquette and the rules of society, but it was difficult when all I wanted to do was relive that moment with her over and over again.
Across the room, I spotted Josephine laughing and talking with a group of gentlemen.
She looked so carefree and happy, while I felt like I was suffocating under the weight of expectations placed upon me.
As if she could sense my gaze on her, Josephine glanced in my direction and smiled softly at me before turning back to her conversation. My heart skipped a beat as our eyes met briefly.
I quickly looked away, not wanting anyone to notice my interest in her.
But I couldn't help sneaking another glance in her direction as she continued to talk with the gentlemen.
It wasn't long before she excused herself from their company and began walking towards me.
The Forbidden Lady
My heart raced as I watched her approach.
I didn't know what to say or do if she came over to me.
I panicked and quickly turned away from her, busying myself with selecting a pastry from the table.
"Aurelia," a voice called out behind me, causing me to jump slightly.
I turned around to see Josephine standing there, a small smile on her face as she watched me nervously fidget with my gloves. "Josephine," I replied, trying to sound calm despite my racing thoughts.
"How are you?"
"I'm well, thank you," she replied softly, her eyes scanning over me with a mixture of concern and curiosity.
"I was wondering if you needed anything."
"No, I'm fine," I said quickly, not wanting to burden her with my worries.
"Thank you for asking."
She nodded understandingly and took a step closer to me.
Her presence made my heart beat faster, and I struggled to keep my composure.
"I wanted to tell you again how beautiful you look tonight," she said gently, her voice filled with sincerity.
"You truly shine among all these people."
I blushed at her words, feeling a warmth spread through me that had nothing to do with the heat of the room.
The Forbidden Lady
I fidgeted with my glass of punch, hyperaware of her proximity to me.
The warmth from her compliment still lingered in my cheeks, making me flush anew whenever our arms accidentally brushed against each other.
My usual perfect posture softened, and I found myself unconsciously leaning closer to her.
"You needn't thank me for speaking truth," she murmured, her fingers ghosting over mine as she reached for a pastry from the table.
The simple touch sent sparks through my body, and I fought the urge to pull away.
