I was in tenth grade, and she was in ninth—my best friend’s little sister.
I knew her, of course.
She knew me, too.
We would see each other at home, but we had never talked much before.
My best friend was her older brother.
His name was Alex.
He and my parents were going on a business trip together.
Before they left, he asked me to babysit his little sister.
I agreed.
I didn’t expect her to be back from summer camp early, though.
On the day she returned, I was playing football with some friends in the backyard.
When I heard someone calling my name, I turned around and turned around to see her standing by the door with her suitcase next to her, a big smile on her face.
I dropped the ball and walked toward her.
"Hey!"
She put down her suitcase and jumped into my arms.
"I missed you!"
I hugged her back.
"Not bad, not bad. How was camp?"
She smiled and said, "Good."
After we separated, I pointed at the suitcase and said, "Babe, you’re supposed to bring it in first."
She stuck her tongue out at me.
"Jack."
Then she started dragging the suitcase herself.
I stopped her hand immediately and took it over.
"Are you trying to be a man?"
She rolled her eyes at me and said, "I’m a woman."
"What woman?"
I lifted the suitcase with one hand, making a show of how easy it was.
She followed me through the front door, pretending to be annoyed but not able to hide her smile.
The house was quiet except for our footsteps on the hardwood floor.
I headed toward the stairs, taking my time.
She walked behind me, humming a camp song.
At the bottom of the stairs, I stopped and turned around.
She bumped into me since she wasn’t expecting me to stop.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to," she said, looking up at me with wide eyes.
"It's okay," I replied, "but there's something I need to tell you before we go upstairs."
She tilted her head, curiosity piqued. "What is it?"
The impact of her body against mine sent a jolt through me.
I dropped the suitcase at the foot of the stairs, and she reached out to steady herself, grabbing my arm.
Her hand lingered there for a little longer than necessary.
Standing this close to her, I noticed that she had changed since last summer.
Her eyes were deeper and more knowing.
The house felt smaller, and the air between us was heavy with unspoken words.
My heart pounded in my chest as she looked up at me, waiting.
I stood there, frozen at the bottom of the stairs.
Her hand was still on my forearm, her fingers warm against my skin.
The afternoon sunlight streamed in through the window, casting a golden glow over her face.
I swallowed hard, trying to remember what I had been about to say.
She took a step closer, and I caught the faint scent of strawberry shampoo in her hair.
The suitcase lay tipped over next to us, forgotten in the moment.
Time seemed to slow down as I lowered my head toward hers, my pulse thundering in my ears.
