My water breaks.
I feel the liquid gushing out of me and I know that my time has come.
I slowly stand up, trying not to spill any more liquid on the floor.
I have been having contractions for more than a day now, but I was too afraid to tell anyone.
I know that the pain that I have been feeling is not normal.
The pain has been getting worse and worse, but it was still bearable until a few hours ago.
That’s when the real pain started, and I knew that my child was finally ready to come out.
"Oja! Kiame! Come quickly!"
Yora yells from outside my hut.
I hear the sound of footsteps rushing to my side.
I see my mother, Kiame, rushing inside with a bundle of clothes in her hand.
"Lyra! What happened? How did you get here?"
Kiame asks, confusion evident in her voice.
I take a deep breath before answering her.
"My water broke."
Kiame looks at me like she heard something that she never expected to hear.
She slowly stands up and signals to Yora and Zuerra to follow her out of the hut.
"Come," she says to me.
"We have to get you to your hut. It’s not safe for you to be here right now."
Safely?
What does she mean by that?
Is she talking about my baby and how it’s not safe for him or her to be here?
For her to say that it’s not safe for me right now means that there is danger lurking around us.
But where is the danger?
I stumble after my mother, one hand pressed against my swollen belly.
The wet ground squelches beneath our feet, and another contraction hits me, forcing me to stop and grab onto a nearby tree trunk for support.
Yora rushes over to steady me while Zuerra scouts ahead, checking to see if there are any other villagers who might spot us.
The path to my isolated hut feels longer than ever before.
Through gritted teeth, I notice how Kiame keeps glancing over her shoulder, her eyes darting between the shadows of the trees.
When we finally reach the entrance of the hut, she ushers me inside quickly, as if we are hiding evidence of a crime.
"Mother, what aren't you telling me?" I manage to ask between labored breaths.
Kiame hesitates, her eyes filled with a mix of fear and urgency.
"The elders have forbidden births outside the sacred grounds; they believe it brings misfortune," she whispers, her voice trembling.
I grip the doorframe, refusing to take another step.
"Lyra, we can't waste any more time," Kiame says, pulling at my arm.
"We need to get you to the sacred grounds before the next phase begins."
Yora starts packing a small bag with herbs and other necessities while Zuerra checks the path one last time to make sure no one is following us.
I take a few small steps, but another contraction rips through me, forcing me to stop again.
My legs shake beneath me as I struggle to stand upright.
Kiame offers her support, guiding me forward with a steady hand.
The path twists and turns through the mangroves, and I have to concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other.
Every few minutes, I have to pause and lean against a nearby tree trunk to catch my breath.
The wet mud makes it difficult to walk without slipping, and I can feel my body trembling with each contraction. "Lyra, we're almost there," Kiame reassures me, her voice filled with determination.
"Just a little further."
Finally, we reach the edge of the sacred grounds, a clearing surrounded by ancient trees and filled with the scent of incense and burning herbs.
Kiame leads me to a small hut in the center of the clearing, where an elderly woman is waiting for us.
She motions for us to enter, and Kiame helps me inside.
The hut is dimly lit by candles and lanterns, casting flickering shadows on the walls.
The air is thick with the smell of herbs and smoke.
I can hear the sound of drums beating softly in the distance, adding to the sense of anticipation that fills the air. "Mother," I say through clenched teeth as another contraction hits me hard.
"I thought I was banned from all sacred spaces."
Kiame shakes her head, her eyes filled with determination.
"This is different," she says firmly.
"Tradition demands that all births take place here. The elders will not deny you this."
As I stumble forward, Kiame catches me by the elbow, holding me steady.
With a final push, I step into the sacred space, knowing there's no turning back.
