I was Mr. Fantastic, one quarter of the superhero team known as the Fantastic Four, along with my wife, the Invisible Woman, my brother-in-law, the Human Torch, and my best friend – and a man who’d been through hell because of me – Ben Grimm, aka The Thing.
My wife and I had two kids together, and they were the light of our lives.
We’d had our adventures, battled some of the worst villains in the world, and we’d saved humanity countless times.
But it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows.
There were calls in the middle of the night that took me away from my family, missions that put all of our lives in danger, and responsibilities that sometimes made me feel like I was carrying the weight of the entire planet on my shoulders.
Not to mention the times I’d had to make the hard choices – the ones nobody wanted to make – in order to preserve peace in the universe.
Sometimes, late at night, when Sue and the kids were asleep, I sat in my office, staring out through the large glass wall at the city below, wondering if any of it had all been worth it.
Was peace worth the cost?
I knew what Ben would say.
He’d say no.

But I couldn’t agree with him.
I had to believe that what we were doing was worth it, or else I’d go crazy.
The morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow over the room.
Sue and I stirred awake, slowly opening our eyes.
The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the air, enticing us to get out of bed.
We exchanged a knowing glance – we both knew who was responsible for the coffee.
Our robotic assistant, H.E.R.B.I.E., had once again taken the initiative.
We got dressed and headed downstairs to the kitchen, where we found the table already set for breakfast.
Pancakes were stacked neatly on a plate, eggs scrambled to perfection, and a carafe of freshly squeezed orange juice sat in the center of the table.
H.E.R.B.I.E. hovered nearby, its mechanical voice cheerfully announcing that breakfast was ready.
I couldn’t help but smile at Sue’s amused expression as she took her seat at the table.
"Reed," Sue began, her voice soft yet probing, "have you thought any more about what we discussed last night?"
I hesitated, glancing at the kids who were busy with their pancakes.
"Sue, I know it's risky, but if there's even a chance that this mission could finally bring Ben back to normal, I have to try."

Just then, the kitchen door swung open, and Johnny stumbled in.
His hair was tousled, his eyes bleary, and his usual morning energy seemed to be missing.
"Morning," he mumbled, reaching for a pancake.
Sue and I exchanged a knowing glance, both thinking the same thing – late night?
"Late night?"
I asked, watching as Johnny took a bite of his pancake.
He shrugged, chewing thoughtfully.
"I forgot something important," he admitted sheepishly.
Sue raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued.
"What did you forget?"
She pressed gently.
Johnny hesitated, glancing at Ben who had just entered the room.

"The mission details," he confessed, looking down at his plate.
I sighed inwardly, realizing we’d have to go over everything again.
"Alright," I said, standing up and smiling reassuringly at Johnny.
The Fantastic Four
"Let's go over the mission details one more time."
As I began explaining, I noticed Ben stirring awake on the couch.
His rocky form shifted, and he groaned, rubbing his eyes.
"Mornin', Stretch," he grumbled, his voice gravelly.
He lumbered towards the kitchen, reaching for a glass from the cabinet.
The clink of glass against the counter echoed through the room as he filled it with water.
Sue watched him closely, concern etched on her face.
Ben gulped down the water, then turned to us with a resigned look.
"Reed, if this mission is about me, I need to know everything," Ben said, his voice steady but tinged with frustration.
I nodded, meeting his gaze.
"We think there's a way to reverse the mutation, Ben," I replied, my tone earnest.
Ben's eyes widened slightly, a flicker of hope crossing his face.
