He maintains his disguise to care for his own child while avoiding detection from his landlord. Despite the challenges, he ensures his son's needs are met and remains grateful for Nick's unwitting support. His friendship with Nick remains strong as he navigates this complex situation.
I still remember the day I met her.
My best friend Peter and I had been living in the apartment for a year.
One day, we heard footsteps coming from the room next to ours.
We looked at each other and smiled.
"Finally, we have new neighbors," I said.
Peter nodded, and we didn't say anything else.
We knew that with neighbors, we had to be more considerate.
We couldn't play the guitar or watch movies after 10 pm.
We also had to try not to make too much noise when we walked or cooked.
But we were okay with that.
After all, being considerate was part of being human, right?
The next day, I saw a young woman carrying groceries as she walked into her apartment.
I waved at her and smiled, but she just looked at me and didn't say anything.
I thought maybe she was tired from moving or didn't speak English well.
So I just smiled and wished her a good night before I turned around and went back to my apartment.
The next day, Peter and I were watching TV when we heard a knock on the door.
I stood up and opened the door, and then I was surprised to see the young woman from next door.
"Hi," she said with a smile.
"Hello," I replied.
"My name is Emma, and this is my daughter."
She had an infant in her arms covered with a blanket.
"I'm Nick, and this is Peter. Nice to meet you."
I hesitate, glancing back at Peter who gives me a nod.
Emma is standing in the doorway, gently rocking her baby.
The baby makes soft cooing sounds that echo in the hallway.
I notice the delicious aroma of cooking wafting from her apartment.
"We'd love to," I reply, surprised by my own eagerness.
Emma's face brightens as she explains dinner will be ready at seven.
She turns to leave but pauses, adding that we're welcome to stay overnight if we drink, gesturing to the wine bottles visible through her open door.
The baby suddenly lets out a sharp cry, causing Emma to quickly excuse herself and close the door.
After Emma leaves, I notice Peter acting strangely quiet.
He's fidgeting with his phone, avoiding eye contact.
I stand in our cramped kitchen, opening the nearly empty fridge.
"We should bring something to dinner," I suggest.
"We could pick up a dessert."
I pull out a carton of milk, only to find it's expired.
Peter's face tightens as he grips his phone harder, but he won't look at me.
I grab my wallet from the counter and my keys jingle as I head for the door.
"Come on, there's a bakery down the street."
