In this city there are five towns and in each town they are ruled by a leader or king or queen.
The shifter town has shifters that can turn into anything like tigers, bears, wolves, anything.
The mythical town has mythical creatures like dragons, unicorns, extra.
The monster town has demons and other monsters.
The neutral town is where all five leaders go to have a monthly meeting.
The vampire town is where the vampires live.
Each town has a king or queen and in the shifter town, my best friend Lila's dad is the king.
In each of the towns, the kings and queens rule with their mate by their side.
In every town, there is a portal but they are all hidden from everybody else; only the kings and queens know about them.
I am Aria Blackwood.
I am a shifter living in the Shifter Town.
I turned 18 two days ago, and now I am waiting to turn.
All shifters turn into something when they reach 18 and get their mates on their 18th birthday.
I was born on my parent's 18th birthday because my mom was pregnant before she turned 18.
My dad turned 18 exactly 18 years ago on this day, February 14th, Valentine's Day.
I was walking with Lila down the cobblestone streets of Shifter Town.
There were people in their animal forms, like a bear lumbering by carrying lumber on his back, and a falcon swooping down to deliver a message to a wolf.
Lila nudged me with her elbow.
"You'll probably turn into something fierce like a lion or graceful like a deer," she said.
I wasn't so sure.
I had always been a bit of an oddball.
I liked to read books and play video games instead of going out and having fun.
I didn't think I was the type to turn into something fierce or graceful.
Lila and I stopped at our favorite spot, a small café where the owner shifted between human and red panda forms as he served customers.
We sat down at a table and ordered some drinks.
As we sipped them, I noticed my hands starting to shake.
"Aria, are you okay?" Lila asked, her eyes wide with concern.
"I don't know," I replied, trying to steady my hands. "It's like something inside me is waking up."
"Could it be the portal?" she whispered, glancing around nervously.
The shaking in my hands grew stronger, causing me to grip the table tightly.
My untouched tea suddenly went flying as I knocked it over.
The café patrons turned to stare at me.
I tried to stand up, but my legs were wobbly beneath me.
Lila grabbed my arm, but I pushed her away, afraid I would hurt her.
The café owner rushed over, his face filled with concern.
"Aria, do you feel it?" he asked, his voice trembling.
I nodded, unable to speak.
"It's your first transformation," he said, his eyes wide with wonder.
I stumbled toward the back exit of the café, desperate to get out of the crowded space.
My skin felt too tight, my bones aching as if they were shifting and reforming.
The world around me began to spin.
"Aria, listen to me," Lila said urgently, following me outside.
"You need to focus on something familiar, something that grounds you."
I gasped for air, the world blurring around me. "The portal... it's calling me," I managed to say, the words barely a whisper.
The Fae King
Lila grabbed my arm, pulling me toward the alley beside the café.
"Here, against the wall," she said, her voice steady and calm.
I braced myself against the rough brick, my muscles spasming as I fought against the transformation.
"Aria, breathe deeply," Lila instructed, her voice a lifeline in the chaos.
I slid down the wall, my palms scraping against the coarse surface.
I forced myself to inhale and exhale in measured counts, my heart pounding in my chest.
Slowly but surely, my racing pulse began to slow.
The painful stretching beneath my skin subsided, replaced by an unfamiliar energy coursing through my veins.
Through half-closed eyes, I watched as my trembling hands steadied, returning to their normal form.
In that moment of clarity, I realized the portal wasn't just calling me—it was awakening something far more powerful within.
I pressed my back against the wall, still catching my breath from the transformation.
The alley was quiet, except for the distant hum of the portal.
Suddenly, an otherworldly roar shattered the stillness, echoing off the walls of the surrounding buildings.
Lila grabbed my arm, her fingers digging into my skin as inky black shadows began seeping from behind the dumpster where the portal lay hidden.
The darkness moved like liquid smoke, curling around our feet and rising knee-high.
My newly awakened senses screamed danger, but my legs refused to move.
The shadows thickened, taking on a solid form as they crept closer.
A pair of glowing red eyes emerged from the darkness, followed by the outline of massive claws.
"Aria, we have to get out of here now!" Lila urged, her voice trembling with urgency.
"But the portal—it's connected to me somehow," I replied, my eyes locked on the creature emerging from the shadows.
"That's exactly why we need to leave; it's drawn to your energy," she insisted, pulling me back toward the café.
