We do not invent time.
Therefore, we are not born.
We do not grow old.
We do not die.
But we also do not remember who we are.
I was Ezra, I think.
I was not sure.
But I was curious, and adventurous, and openminded.
And one day, I discovered a group of people from another planet.
They were humans, from Earth.
I watched them from afar, careful not to be seen.
I had never seen creatures like them before.
They were strange, and fascinating.
And they spoke of things that I had never heard of.
The most fascinating, and confusing, of all… time.
Time, they said, was what they used to measure the difference between two events.
It was what made things change, what made things move forward.
They spoke of hours, and minutes, and seconds.
And of years, and decades, and centuries.
And then they spoke of birth, and growth, and decay, and death.
I move closer to their settlement, my footsteps quiet on the crystalline ground.
The humans gather around a flickering fire, their shadows dancing against the eternal twilight.
One of them, a woman with dark hair, notices me first.
She doesn't scream or run.
Instead, she tilts her head, studying me with curious eyes.
The others turn to look, their conversations halting mid-sentence.
I step into their circle of light, my pale skin reflecting the fire's glow.
My mouth forms unfamiliar shapes as I attempt their language.
"What is this thing you call time?"
While we converse, a strange distortion catches my eye.
The air begins to ripple and fold like water, creating a shimmering tear in reality several steps away.
Through this opening, I see towering structures of glass and metal reaching into a blue sky - so different from our perpetual twilight.
Unfamiliar sounds drift through the portal: the hum of machines, the distant rumble of thunder.
And scents: the tang of smoke, the sweetness of blooming flowers.
The dark-haired woman, who introduced herself as Aria, gasps and steps toward the shimmering tear.
I follow, drawn by an inexplicable pull.
But as I reach the threshold, I hesitate.
The portal closes, leaving only the memory of a world beyond.
