The year is 2087.
Every morning, my smart alarm wakes me at exactly 6:00 AM.
It plays a tune that I chose myself, a happy and upbeat melody that helps me start the day in a good mood.
The first thing I do after waking up is to put on my VR glasses and check my social media accounts.
I scroll through the posts from my friends and acquaintances, watch a few short videos, and see what’s new on the newsfeed.
After spending exactly one hour on social media, I put the glasses back in their box and head to the communal dining hall for breakfast.
The dining hall is filled with people, all of whom I’ve never met before.
We eat in silence, without any conversation whatsoever.
This is how every single day of my life goes by.
In the future, no one dares to leave their living quarters.
The only reason people do so is because they have to go to work.
If they don’t, they will be punished by the government.
No exceptions are made.
There are AI-powered cameras and drones watching our every move, making sure that we comply with the rules.
I remain seated after everyone else has left, pretending to slowly finish my tasteless nutrient paste.
The drone’s red sensor eye sweeps across the empty tables, pausing briefly each time it passes over me.
My heart rate increases, but I force myself to maintain a steady rhythm of bringing the spoon to my mouth and back down again.
Through my peripheral vision, I notice a maintenance worker - Mei Hua - wiping down the tables with a dirty rag, gradually moving closer to my position.
She drops something small on the floor, and it rolls under my table.
I wait until the drone turns away to perform its next sweep before bending down to retrieve the object.
It’s a small data chip, no larger than a grain of rice.
"Meet me at the old library after curfew," Mei Hua whispers, her eyes darting nervously toward the drone.
"Why should I trust you?" I ask, clutching the chip tightly in my palm.
"Because it's not just your freedom at stake—it's everyone's," she replies, her voice barely audible over the hum of the machinery.
I stare at my half-finished nutrient paste, pushing it around with my spoon to appear occupied while my mind races.
The dining hall empties steadily as workers return to their stations.
Through my peripheral vision, I track Mei Hua methodically cleaning nearby tables, her movements deliberate and unhurried.
A security drone hovers by the entrance, its red sensor light sweeping back and forth.
I wait until it turns toward the kitchen, then palm the chip from under the table.
The cold metal presses against my sweating hand as I stand, gathering my tray.
