I was once so poor that I didn’t have even a single penny in my pocket, but I worked hard, believed in myself & today I am one of the richest persons in the world.
When I was just 12 years old, my father left us.
He went away from New York City before I was old enough to even remember his face.
He took some of my clothes and toys with him, but he left behind a note saying he’d send some money every month.
My mother waited for that money for years, but it never came.
She was a fighter.
She worked multiple jobs to support me and my siblings, and she taught us to never give up no matter what life threw at us.
I remember seeing her cry herself to sleep at night, but in the morning she’d always wake up with a smile on her face to tackle another day.
The Empower! Story
Sitting at my mahogany desk in my penthouse office, I pull out a sheet of expensive stationery.
It’s the kind I could never afford growing up.
My hands shake as I write the date in the top right corner.
It’s taken years, but through a private investigator, I finally have an address for my father.
He’s living in Arizona now, and I’ve got a few things to say to him.
The words come slowly at first, like blood from a wound that has been festering for too long.
But as I write, the pain begins to flow out of me like tears.
I tell him about the boy he left behind, the boy who grew up without a father figure in his life.
I tell him about the struggles we faced, the nights we went to bed hungry because there was no food in the house.
I tell him about my mother, who worked herself to the bone just to keep us alive.
The Empower! Story
And I tell him about my siblings, who grew up with scars that would never fully heal. But then I tell him about how we made it through.
How we found strength in each other and in ourselves.
How we learned to rely on no one but ourselves.
And how we rose above our circumstances to become successful adults.
I tell him about Empower!, the company that I founded and built from scratch.
I tell him about how it has changed lives and given people hope for a better future.
And then I sign it, but not before pausing for a moment to consider what name to use.
Do I sign it with the name he gave me, or do I use the one that I’ve made for myself?
In the end, I decide on something different altogether: "A son he never knew."
I fold the letter carefully and place it in an envelope addressed to him.
The Empower! Story
I stare at the sealed envelope, my father’s address mocking me from the pristine white surface.
Walking to the office window, I look out over the city lights twinkling in the evening darkness.
I remember nights spent studying by candlelight when we couldn’t pay the electric bill.
The letter feels heavier than its few pages should.
My assistant comes in with a fresh cup of coffee, but I wave her away.
The Empower! Story
I need this moment alone.
I move to my private mailroom and select a priority mail envelope.
I place the letter inside, seal it carefully, and write down the tracking number in my notebook.
