Lavinia
She is the daughter of a wealthy merchant, raised in a grand estate. She is determined, resilient, and heartbroken. After her father's death, she is betrayed and left to marry Albert, whom she despises. Despite this betrayal, she finds solace in her maid, Kate, and later discovers Albert's deceit. Eventually, she escapes to the continent with her true love, Henry, and plans for a new life.
Albert
He is the son of a noble family and husband to Lavinia. He is deceitful, manipulative, and unfaithful. Initially presented as a suitable match for Lavinia due to his wealth and status, he reveals his true nature by cheating on her. Faking his own death to avoid his responsibilities, he leaves Lavinia heartbroken and vulnerable. His betrayal serves as a catalyst for Lavinia's ultimate escape and new beginnings.
Duke (of Henry’s father)
He is the father of Henry and second son to the Duke of Ashburton. He is understanding, supportive, and openminded. Unlike traditional nobles who strictly follow social conventions, the Duke encourages Henry to follow his heart rather than adhere to familial expectations. His openmindedness plays a significant role in facilitating Lavinia and Henry's plan to elope.
It was a cold winter morning in 1870s, the sky was gray and the sun was hiding behind thick clouds.
The streets were empty and the only sound was coming from the horses and carriages that were passing by.
Inside a grand palace, I was standing in front of my mirror, staring at my brown hair, brown eyes, white skin, pink cheeks and lips.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, trying to stop my tears from falling.
My husband, Albert, was standing behind me and his hands were around my waist.
"Are you sure that you want to do this?" I asked him again.
"Yes," he said.
"Lavinia, we have talked about this before. I will be gone for a couple of weeks."
"I know but—"
"Come on, Lavinia," he cut me off.
"It is not like we have not been separated before. You know that it is necessary. My family and I have an event that we need to attend."
He turned me around and looked into my eyes.
"You will be fine. You have Kate with you. And besides, it is not like we are apart for years or something. It is just for a couple of weeks."
He smiled and kissed my forehead.
"I will be fine."
I took another deep breath and tried to convince myself that everything was fine.
But it was not fine.
I watched him as he was adjusting his cravat in front of the mirror.
He was doing it slowly and carefully, making sure that it was perfect.
His movements were slow and rehearsed.
He was a man who liked everything to be perfect.
He took his pocket watch and put it in his pocket, then he took his gloves and put them on.
The morning light was coming through the window and it was shining on his wedding ring.
The same ring that he had put on my finger a year ago, promising me that we would be together forever.
There was a knock on the door and Kate came inside with fresh linens.
She smiled at me and I smiled back at her.
I knew that she understood what I was going through.
She had been with me since I was a child and she knew me better than anyone else.
Albert took his hat and coat and went out of the room.
I followed him to the window and looked outside.
His valet was loading trunks onto the carriage.
It seemed like too many for a couple of weeks. I took the letter from my dress pocket and looked at it again.
It was the letter that I had found in Albert's desk drawer a few days ago.
It was an invitation to a villa in France, not to his family's event as he had told me.
And there was another name on the invitation, a woman's name, Sophia, his mistress.
I did not know what to do with this information but I knew that I could not keep it inside me anymore.
I needed to confront him about it but I did not know how or when.
Albert came back into the room and kissed me on the cheek one last time before he left.
As the carriage disappeared down the frosty street, I resolved to follow him.
After he left, I waited until the night came and then I went to his study.
My hands were shaking as I lit a single candle.
Kate was standing at the door and watching me.
I started with his desk drawers, but they were empty, too empty for a man who had been working there for years.
I looked around and noticed that one of the books on the bookshelf was not aligned with the others.
I took it out and found a loose panel behind it.
I pressed on it and a small drawer opened.
Inside, there was a stack of letters tied with red ribbon.
I untied them and started reading.
They were from different people, all asking for money.
Some of them were threatening to reveal his secrets if he did not pay them back.
As I continued reading, I realized that Albert was in deep financial trouble.
He had been gambling and borrowing money from dangerous people. But that was not all; there were also love letters from Sophia, talking about their affair and how they planned to be together forever.
The letters went back years, even before our marriage.
It seemed that they had been planning this all along, using me to get my inheritance.
My fingers trembled as I read the words, my heart sinking deeper with each sentence.
I felt betrayed and angry, but most of all, I felt stupid for believing in him.
There was another letter that caught my attention; it was addressed to me but not written by Albert.
It was from Sophia, telling me about their affair and how she had been waiting for him to divorce me so they could be together forever.
She said that she knew that I would never let him go willingly, so she had come up with a plan to make sure that we would never be together again. I read the letter over and over again, trying to understand what she meant by her words.
But before I could figure it out, Kate came into the room and told me that she heard footsteps coming from the hallway outside the study.
I quickly gathered all of the letters and put them back where I found them.
But then I saw one more document that caught my attention; it was a transfer of ownership document for my family's estate in my name to Albert's name.
His signature was at the bottom of the document; he had already signed it without my knowledge or consent!
