I was willing to do whatever it took to get the money to be able to take care of my family.
If that meant selling my soul to the devil, then so be it.
I was okay with that.
"I can give you exactly what you want," a deep, alluring voice said in my ear.
"But are you sure you are ready for what that will bring into your life?"
I wasn’t really listening to him.
I was more concerned with how much money I would get and how quickly I could use that to help my family.
At this point, I didn’t care what happened to me.
As long as my wife and child were taken care of, I was okay with whatever happened next.
"Within the year, I will be twenty-four years old. That is when I want the money to come through. Is that something you can do?"
I asked.
"Yes, I can do that. But like I said before, are you prepared for what will happen once your soul is mine?"
This man in front of me was not what I envisioned the devil would look like.
He was tall, had dark hair, and wore a black suit with a white shirt underneath, which was starched stiffly.
The tie around his neck was black with tiny white diamonds woven throughout the material.
I stared at the hand he had extended to me, the skin pale and almost glowing in the dim light of the room.
His fingers were long and slender, his nails perfectly manicured.
My throat tightened as I looked at his hand, knowing that once I shook it, there was no going back.
Behind me, a clock ticked away, each sound reminding me of Elizabeth and our child waiting at home with empty cupboards.
I thought of Gideon in his expensive apartment, never knowing what we were going through.
The devil’s smile never wavered as he waited for my answer.
On the mahogany desk between us was a contract written in elegant script.
My hand trembled slightly as I reached forward.
Our palms met, his skin unnaturally cold against mine.
Lucifer slid the contract across his desk, the parchment rustling against the polished wood.
My fingers gripped the fountain pen he handed me, its weight substantial in my hand.
The gold trim on the pen glinted in the light, and I couldn’t help but notice how warm it felt to the touch.
I scanned the contract, the elaborate script detailing my doom in flowery language.
But I didn’t focus on that.
All I saw was the promise of wealth, of a future for my family.
Each letter I signed felt like a small betrayal, but I thought of Elizabeth feeding our child the last scraps from our pantry.
The pen scratched across the paper - first my full name, then the date.
