My name is David, son of Paul.
A Knight in the Kingdom of Aledress, ruled by Morgan I.
Three years ago, goblins were at our southern frontier, my father went to fight them and never came back.
They say he was killed in battle, but I refuse to believe it.
I was brought up in the palace, where I met Princess Amanda.
We grew up together, and she has been the only one to show me love and companionship.
Perhaps soon we can be together, but at least I get to see her face and golden hair every day.
The King treats me as if I were his own son.
I am treated as such, even though my father was only a Knight.
I don't know who I am anymore.
Is this what they mean by war?
Either way, at least I get to see Amanda every day.
If only she could love me as more than a friend.
Perhaps there will be a day when I can express my feelings to her.
If only I could tell her how I truly felt.
But what if she didn't feel the same way?
Would our friendship be ruined?
I am stuck with these thoughts day and night.
Perhaps one day I will find a way to express my feelings to her.
The Demon King's Revenge
I am up late at night again, pacing the castle corridors.
I find myself in front of King Morgan's study.
I look at the door, made of solid oak.
It is a barrier between me and the King.
I hear him shuffling papers.
My hand trembles as I raise it to knock on the door.
"Come in," he says from the other side.
I enter the room and see maps and battle plans all over his desk.
He sets them aside when he sees me.
"David, what brings you here so late?"
"I couldn't sleep," I say, trying to be polite.
"I know you have been having trouble sleeping lately. Is there something on your mind?"
I take a deep breath and decide to tell him everything.
"I have feelings for Amanda. I know I am not worthy of her, but I cannot help how I feel."
His face is unreadable as he listens to my words.
The Demon King's Revenge
He rises from his desk and walks to the window.
His silhouette is stark against the moonlight.
My heart pounds in my chest as I wait for his response.
"Amanda has also approached me about her feelings," he says, looking out the window.
"I think it would be best if you both met in private. The palace gardens tomorrow evening. You can speak freely there, away from the eyes of the court."
I am surprised by his words.
I was expecting him to forbid our union, but he has not.
"Thank you, your Majesty," I say, bowing deeply.
I turn to leave, but he calls out to me.
"David, remember that your father would be proud of you for being honest about your feelings."
The Demon King's Revenge
"Thank you, sire," I reply, feeling a weight lift from my shoulders.
As I exit the study, I hear him add softly, "And perhaps it's time you learned the truth about your father."
His words hang in the air, leaving me with more questions than answers.
I cannot sleep.
His words play over and over in my head.
What did he mean by "the truth about your father"?
I pace back and forth in my chambers, trying to make sense of it all.
The candle on my desk casts flickering shadows on the stone walls.
It's almost burned down to nothing, but I don't bother to trim the wick.
My mind is elsewhere.
A servant arrives with my evening meal, but I barely touch it.
I am too lost in thought to care about food.
All I can think about is tomorrow's meeting with Amanda in the gardens.
The Demon King's Revenge
I sit in my chambers, polishing my ceremonial sword for the hundredth time.
It's a habit of mine when I'm nervous or anxious.
The smooth motion of the cloth on the blade calms me somehow.
I look out the window at the moon, wondering what tomorrow will bring.
Will Amanda feel the same way about me?
Or will she reject me?
I am lost in thought when suddenly, a loud crash echoes through the corridor outside my room.
I rush to the door and fling it open, finding Amanda standing there, breathless and wide-eyed.
"David, I had to see you," she says, her voice trembling with urgency.
"What happened?" I ask, concern flooding my voice as I take in her disheveled appearance.
The Demon King's Revenge
"I'll explain inside," she says, glancing nervously over her shoulder.
I usher her into my chambers, checking the hallway for guards before closing the door behind us.
Her hair is tangled, and her silk dress bears dirt marks as if she'd been running through the castle grounds.
I guide her to sit on the wooden chest near my bed, feeling a mix of confusion and concern.
Standing awkwardly before her, I notice tears welling up in her eyes.
When I kneel to meet her gaze, she reaches for my hand.
Our fingers intertwine, and she whispers, "I overheard something terrible in my father's war room."
Before she can explain further, I find myself drawing her closer, our faces inches apart.
"What did you hear, Amanda?" I ask softly, my heart racing with anticipation.
"They're planning to betray King Morgan," she says, her voice barely above a whisper.
The Demon King's Revenge
I feel a chill run down my spine as I realize the gravity of her words.
I pull her even closer, her trembling body pressing against mine.
We sit there in stunned silence, the weight of her discovery hanging heavy in the air.
Finally, I break the silence, my voice low and urgent.
"We have to act fast. I'll gather some supplies, and we'll leave tonight."
Amanda nods in agreement, her eyes filled with determination.
We quickly gather what we can: my sword, a water skin, dried meat for the journey, and a small pouch of coins.
Amanda insists on returning to her chambers to change into riding clothes and retrieve her bow.
We agree to meet at the castle's western postern gate in thirty minutes.
As she slips out of my chambers, I stuff the provisions into a leather satchel.
I write a coded message to Sir Roland, my most trusted fellow knight, leaving it sealed on my desk for him to find.
The Demon King's Revenge
After checking the corridor for guards, Amanda slips back in.
Her heart pounds in time with mine as we prepare to escape into the night.
"Are you sure about this, David?" Amanda asks, her voice a mixture of fear and resolve.
"We have no choice, Amanda," I reply, gripping her hand tightly. "If we don't warn the king, everything we've ever known will be lost."
She nods, determination hardening her features.
The Demon King's Revenge
With our supplies gathered, we move to the window.
The night air is cool and damp, and the distant chirping of crickets fills the air.
I climb out first, dropping down into the garden below.
Amanda follows, her dress catching on a thorned bush as she falls into my waiting arms.
We make our way through the shadows, avoiding detection by the guards patrolling the castle walls.
As we approach the postern gate, I hear a strange grinding noise coming from behind my wardrobe.
It's a heavy piece of furniture that hasn't been moved in years.
The sound grows louder, like stone scraping against stone.
Amanda and I exchange fearful glances as the grinding noise reaches a deafening pitch.
Suddenly, there's a loud thud, and I feel the floor shudder beneath my feet.
The Demon King's Revenge
I turn to see my wardrobe has moved several inches away from the wall, revealing a narrow doorway where there once was none.
Pale blue light spills from glowing crystals embedded in the stone walls, illuminating a passage that stretches into darkness.
Amanda gasps, clutching my arm in shock and fear.
I draw my sword, ready to face whatever dangers lie ahead.
The air is musty and stale, carrying whispers of ancient magic long forgotten. "What is this place?"
Amanda whispers, her voice trembling with awe and terror.
"I don't know," I reply, taking a hesitant step forward into the unknown.
"But it could be our only way out."
I reach out a hand to touch one of the crystals embedded in the wall.
As soon as my skin makes contact with it, it pulses brighter, bathing us in an otherworldly glow.
The Demon King's Revenge
"Let's go," Amanda says softly, her eyes wide with determination.
"Wait," I say, pulling her back gently.
"What if this leads us somewhere even more dangerous?"
Amanda looks at me, her eyes fierce and unyielding.
