Name: Emery Parker
Height: 5’8
Age: 16
Hair: Dirty blonde
Eyes: Electric blue
Daddy: Zeus
I'm extremely gorgeous.
My brother Jason Grace says so, and being the biased big halfbrother that he is, he wouldn't lie to me.
Even if he did, I'd still be able to see my beauty in the mirror.
After all, I'm not one to believe what others say easily.
I like to see and decide for myself.
I'm a bit protective of myself and my feelings.
That's because I've been hurt in my past relationships, which weren't many, but enough to make me wary of getting too close to someone in that nature.
It's not to say that I'm not a good person because I'm not.
I just don't let people in easily.
It takes a lot of effort for someone to get in; once they're in, it takes even more effort to get them out, but it's doable.
I just have to make sure I'm careful when I'm letting someone in so that I don't let the wrong person get too close and hurt me deeply.
Besides Jason, there's one other person I've let in and that's Maggie Johnson.
She's my best friend and the daughter of Hermes.
She's very pretty with her brown hair and hazel eyes which are her own unique color.
She's 5’7" and 16 like me.
The Demigod's Heart
I'm sitting cross-legged on my bunk in Cabin One, staring at the full-length mirror mounted on the wall.
The afternoon sun streams through the high windows of the cabin, catching my dirty blonde hair and making it look even more golden.
My electric blue eyes narrow as I examine my reflection.
I'm thinking about Tyler Westbrook, the son of Poseidon.
He's 6'1 and seventeen years old with dark wavy hair and sea green eyes.
He's extremely hot, and all the girls like him.
I've seen him around camp, but I've never really talked to him until today during sword practice.
He'd smiled at me differently today than he had before.
His smile wasn't his usual casual one; it was softer and more intimate, as if he knew a secret that no one else did.
My fingers trace over the silver lightning bolt pendant that Jason gave me for protection.
The Demigod's Heart
It's become a nervous habit of mine to touch it whenever I think about something or someone that makes me nervous or uncomfortable.
I remember what Maggie said to me during lunch today: "Not everyone will hurt you like Marcus did."
The sound of the conch horn echoes through the camp, signaling lunch.
I push off my bunk and make my way out of my cabin.
The dining pavilion is located in the center of the camp.
It's a large white building with a roof supported by wooden beams and tall pillars.
The doors are open, allowing the warm breeze to flow in from outside.
The smell of barbecue and fresh bread fills the air, making my stomach growl in hunger.
I see Maggie waving me over to our usual table.
She's sitting between Annabeth Chase and Rachel Davis.
Annabeth is the daughter of Athena and one of the most powerful demigods at camp.
She's been on many quests with her boyfriend Percy Jackson, who's the son of Poseidon.
The Demigod's Heart
Rachel is the daughter of Hermes and one of Maggie's cousins.
I slide onto the bench beside Maggie, and Annabeth scoots over to make room for me between them.
We're allowed to sit wherever we want now instead of being divided by cabins.
It was a new rule that Mark Gessner, one of the counselors-in-training, had made after becoming head counselor last year. Across from us are Jason, Percy, and Gray Ashford, who's the son of Hades and Tyler's best friend.
They're talking about strategies for capture the flag tonight.
The Demigod's Heart
Tyler arrives last, dropping into the empty seat directly opposite me.
I pick at my pizza and listen to the boys discuss their plan of attack while stealing glances at Tyler, who's completely absorbed in the conversation.
I'm not interested in the game, so I tune them out.
Annabeth leans forward suddenly, her gray eyes glinting with mischief.
"You guys are wasting your breath," she smirks.
"The girls have already figured out how to crush you tomorrow."
Percy raises his eyebrows at his girlfriend's challenge, while Tyler's attention shifts to our end of the table.
Gray snorts, making a show of rolling his eyes, but Jason looks genuinely concerned.
Tyler's gaze meets mine again, and he gives me that same soft smile from earlier.
"Emery," Tyler says, his voice low enough that only I can hear, "I need to talk to you about something important after dinner."
I nod, trying to ignore the flutter in my chest.
The Demigod's Heart
Maggie nudges me with her elbow, whispering, "Looks like someone has a secret admirer."
I shrug, not wanting to draw attention to myself.
The conch horn blows again, signaling the end of lunch.
I stand and walk with Maggie to the armory, where we're required to meet before every game of capture the flag.
I adjust my bronze armor and grip my sword tighter as we gather around Annabeth for our strategy huddle.
"Okay, girls," Annabeth says, her voice loud enough for everyone to hear.
"We're going to split into three groups. One will be on offense, one on defense, and one will be in charge of distracting the other team."
She points to a few girls who'll be on offense with her.
"Rachel, you're with me. We'll take the left flank."
She points to a few more girls who'll be on defense with Maggie and me.
"Emery and Maggie, you're with me. We'll take the right flank."
The Demigod's Heart
The rest of the girls will be in charge of distracting the other team.
Annabeth gives them their instructions before dismissing us to get into position.
We run through the trees until we reach our side of the border.
The boys are already there, waiting for us.
Tyler's standing at the front of their group, his dark hair peeking out under his helmet.
The Demigod's Heart
He grins at me and mouths "good luck" before Percy leads them into position. The conch horn blows again, signaling the start of the game.
We scatter into the woods as the other team charges toward us.
Maggie and I take our posts near our flag, which is hidden behind a cluster of boulders.
The game lasts for a while, and I'm hot and sweaty by the time we're done.
We win, and I trudge back to the armory with my sword in hand.
The boys are already there, talking about their loss.
I turn my sword in and head toward the showers to clean up.
As I walk, I replay Tyler's words from lunch.
Good luck.
What did he mean by that?
He'd said it with such a serious look on his face.
The warm water of the shower eases some of the tension from my muscles, but it does nothing to calm my nerves about what he wants to talk to me about tonight.
I slip on a fresh pair of clothes—a Camp Half-Blood t-shirt and jean shorts—and climb up to my bunk.
The Demigod's Heart
I sit down and fidget with my lightning bolt necklace, staring out the window at the strawberry fields. The sun is beginning to set over them, casting an orange glow over everything.
It's beautiful.
I've always loved watching the sunsets here at camp.
The conch horn blows again, signaling dinner.
My stomach tightens as I stand and make my way out of the cabin.
The Demigod's Heart
Tyler is waiting for me by the pavilion entrance, his expression unreadable.
I approach him, trying to appear casual.
My heart pounds in my chest, but I keep my face neutral.
He's leaning against one of the marble columns that line the entrance, his dark hair still damp from his post-game shower.
He's wearing the orange Camp Half-Blood t-shirt that all the guys wear after dinner.
It's a simple design—a lightning bolt on the front and the words "Camp Half-Blood" written in Greek on the back—but it looks unfairly good on him.
The Demigod's Heart
His sea-green eyes meet mine as I step up beside him, and he holds my gaze for a fraction of a second longer than usual.
We don't exchange words.
Instead, we fall into step beside each other as we walk into the dining pavilion.
The chatter of the other campers fills the air as we make our way to our usual table.
Piper McLean and Leo Valdez have joined us since last summer, squeezing in between Jason and Percy, making our table even more crowded than usual.
I slide onto the bench next to Maggie while Tyler takes his spot across from me.
The Demigod's Heart
I try to focus on the conversation around me, but my mind is still on what he said at lunch.
I wonder what he wants to talk about tonight.
I've been at Camp Half-Blood since I was twelve, but I've never had a boyfriend.
Not that there haven't been guys interested—I've had a few crushes over the years—but I've always been too scared to act on them.
Dinner ends, and I stand with the others, heading toward the door.
I don't look at Tyler again.
I know he's waiting for me.
When I'm clear of the pavilion, I take off down the worn path that leads to the lake.
My heart pounds in my chest, but I keep my pace steady.
The sun is already setting over the lake, casting long shadows across its surface.
The water glimmers in the fading light as I approach.
I see Tyler already waiting for us at our usual spot near the dock.
He's skipping stones across the surface of the lake, each one bouncing five or six times before sinking into the water.
When he sees me approaching, he straightens up and runs a hand through his dark waves—a nervous gesture I've noticed before. He waits for me to stop next to him, then turns his gaze out at the lake again.
The Demigod's Heart
We're close enough that I can see the last rays of sunlight reflecting off his sea-green eyes.
"Did you mean what you said at lunch?" I ask, breaking the silence.
He nods, still looking at the water. "I did, but it's not just about the game."
I frown, trying to piece it together. "Then what is it about, Tyler?"
He leans back against the large boulder that sits at the edge of the lake, his hands fidgeting with another smooth stone he's picked up from the ground.
The evening breeze picks up, carrying the scent of strawberry fields on its breath.
He takes a step closer to me, his eyes finally meeting mine.
I'm used to seeing confidence in those green depths, but tonight they're filled with vulnerability.
He opens his mouth to speak, then closes it again.
Instead of answering, he tosses the stone into the water.
The splash breaks the silence between us, and I watch as the ripples spread outward from where it landed.
He moves closer again, close enough that I can see the darker flecks in his eyes that are only visible when the sun is almost gone.
"I've been thinking about leaving Camp Half-Blood," he finally admits, his voice barely above a whisper.
My breath catches, and I search his face for any hint of a joke.
The Demigod's Heart
"Why would you leave?" I ask, my voice trembling slightly.
He shifts his weight, running a hand through his hair before answering.
"Not actually leave, but I needed to get your attention."
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.
I'm relieved that he's not actually leaving, but I'm still confused about what's going on.
"Why would you say that?"
I ask, taking a step back from him.
He winces at my question, and I realize that he's been watching me closely enough to notice my reaction.
"I know you're not stupid," he says quietly.
"You know what people think about me."
I nod, crossing my arms over my chest protectively.
The Demigod's Heart
The Demigod's Heart
Tyler Westbrook is known for being one of the hottest guys at camp—and not just because he's the son of Poseidon.
He's charming and confident, and every girl here has had a crush on him at some point or another.
But he's also known for being a player.
Tyler runs a hand through his dark hair, his eyes darting back and forth as he searches for the right words.
"The truth is, I've been trying to find the right moment to tell you something."
He takes another step closer, his voice dropping even lower.
"My reputation, it's not entirely my fault. It's something I've let happen to protect myself."
I tilt my head, trying to understand what he's getting at.
Protect himself?
From what?
He reaches out and gently takes one of my hands in his.
His fingers brush against mine, sending a jolt of electricity through my body.
The lake laps quietly against the shore behind us as we stand there, waiting for him to continue.
The Demigod's Heart
"I've let people think that I'm just a player," he says softly, his eyes locked on mine.
"It's easier that way."
I frown, not understanding why he's telling me this.
"Why?"
His thumb begins tracing small circles on my palm.
The Demigod's Heart
It's a gentle touch, but it sends shivers up my arm anyway.
"Because with you, Emery," he says slowly, "it's different. I like you. Not as a friend, not as Jason's sister. Just you."
I pull my hand away, needing space to process this revelation.
