I was dying.
I was going to die.
There was no way out.
I screamed and screamed and screamed.
But my voice was muffled by the thick manure surrounding my head.
The only ones who heard me were Morgan and Kate, also buried up to their eyes in the shit.
They had screamed, too, when we first fell into this pit.
But now they were quiet, giving up hope, realizing we would never be heard or found.
We were all alone.
No one would even miss us until tomorrow morning, when my mom would call Morgan’s mom to see why we weren’t at our weekly riding lesson.
When she found out what happened, she was going to kill me!
I couldn’t stop screaming, even though it hurt my throat.
I was never going to see my mom again, or my dad, or my little brother.
I was never going to graduate from middle school or high school or go to college.
I was never going to get married or have children.
My life was over, and I was only twelve years old!
Why did we do this?
Why did we ignore the warning signs?
Why did we disobey the grown-ups who told us not to explore the old barn in the woods?
The Deadly Manure
I thrash my head back and forth, but the manure creeps higher, now touching my bottom lip.
Morgan whimpers beside me, and I hear Kate start hyperventilating.
The thick sludge pulls at my body, dragging me down deeper with each movement.
I try tilting my head back to keep my face above the surface, but my neck muscles strain and burn.
The putrid smell is making me lightheaded.
The manure is almost to my nose, and I can’t stop gasping for air.
My chest heaves in and out as I fight for oxygen.
"Mackenzie!"
Morgan cries out my name, her voice breaking.
The muck touches my upper lip.
The Deadly Manure
"Mackenzie, I think I can feel something solid beneath my feet!" Morgan's voice is shaky but filled with a glimmer of hope.
"Are you sure?" Kate gasps, her breath coming in short bursts.
"Yes, if we push down hard enough, maybe we can lift ourselves up and get out of this!"
"I think I can feel it, too," I yell.
"It feels like a wooden board or something!"
"Okay, I'm going to count to three, and we all push down with our feet as hard as we can!" Morgan shouts.
"We have to do it together!"
I nod my head, even though I know she can't see me.
The manure is now touching my bottom lip.
I can feel Kate thrashing around beside me, trying to get into position.
The sludge makes it hard to coordinate our movements.
"One," Morgan yells.
"Two," she counts.
The Deadly Manure
"Three!"
We all push down with our feet at the same time, trying to find leverage against the solid surface beneath us.
I strain my legs, feeling the muscles in my thighs and calves burn.
The manure churns around us, making it difficult to maintain our balance. And then, just as we're starting to lift ourselves up, there's a loud crackling sound beneath our feet.
It's followed by a sickening lurch as the surface gives way beneath us.
The Deadly Manure
We plunge deeper into the darkness, swallowed whole by the earth.
